Deane Ellsworth was behind much of the experimentation of unique sounds for Amtrak’s locomotives. It was no mistake that Amtrak’s first new locomotive, the SDP40F, came with a horn that mimics the 4-note horns on premium Cadillac automobiles of the day that played D-F-A-C. Using stock bells 31, 37, 48, 55 (with dowels 3/4/5/5 respectively) he was able to achieve D#-F#-A#-C# (the same chord just a semitone higher). This example has the “Revised” RS heads, which Leslie created in response to the overblowing and squealing issues often heard on their S series of horns.
