3:09 Pink pepper spray.... "God help us all." *Exactly* The more I study this topic the more I agree that pepper spray is a great option to have. For the average road rage encounter or mentally unstable person in a store, pepper spray lets you get a person off you with far less potential downside than pulling a handgun. Excellent video.

After a couple interactions with some local addicts in my city I decided I needed to start carrying a force multiplier a couple years ago. Thought about a firearm but these situations wouldn't have merited it. Then I thought about one of those sweet telescoping metal rods but realized it would still probably kill somebody and I would probably get manslaughter if I used it in a situation that a gun wasn't allowed. I settled on pepper spray cuz it would let me teach a lesson to idiots without killing them or giving them brain damage, allowing me to get out of there. It could also help me break out of a two or three on one situation, I thought. I have a shield 9 and flashlight now but feel comfortable knowing i can moderate the level of force I need to protect myself from the common drunk idiot. Love this channel. Thanks for the dedication and consistency, John.

Sabre Red saved my ass! It works like a champ and paints the face red! The can I had shot a good 15 to 20 feet and was like a stream very good. Hit two guys in the face with it and took the fight out of them 100%. Better to shoot with the spray than the 9mm.

The JPX Jet protector is the superior Mace projecting device on the market today, Considered by police to be more effective than Taser, shaped like a firearm an fires mace at the face at 500mph lol 2 shot device can quickly be reloaded, an its the only 1 i have ever seen law enforcement prefer over the traditional can. check into it let me know what u think, because in a moment of emergency you will need something under pressure to quickly subdue a person. Lol Naegleria idk which one your looking at cuz the jpx jet protector is small an compact is 2shot device an just a lil bit bigger than a can of mace an lighter to carry has a laser sight an strobe flashlight + mace discharges 5x more potent than any mace sold in u.s. an is equivalent to having an airbag go off in your face lol if i produce a device like the jpx an red dot u, u will get scared an run away or reach for weapon an get hit anyway not to mention the blinding strobe flashlight in your face so its designed to be a deterrent before u have to actually use it, an i forgot to mention its as loud as a 22 when fired so youll think youve been shot bud lol A can of mace does not have any deterrents like i described u just spray an pray it works lol loser so aside from that if u want to just carry a lil bitch ass can of mace thats just gonna make someone mad an get your ass kicked anyway, or force u to pull a firearm prematurely go ahead be my guest, but i guarantee what i carry is more effective than your lil can of hot sauce an + my jpx can reach u 7ft away with little to no chance to react, your mace cnt do that an jpx is preferred by law enforcement over taser for a reason to so haha an if i hit u with jpx u aint using your gun either your blinded instantly an if you go for your firearm after ive hit u with jpx you cn be killed in self defense situation so in closing its better than a can of mace an worth carrying around like i do all the time with my glock19,plz stop online trolling bud its dangerous someone can find u an pull your card good luck an god bless.

As always, thanks John! I had a fellow CCW holder point out the deficiency of OC spray in my EDC a couple of months ago and now never leave home without it. I bought that identical Sabre Red Mk6 and the trainer based on your last video and am very pleased with your suggestion John. The one thing I would add to this is that you should generally avoid pepper gel sprays (outside of choice situations such as having asthma or anticipating having to use pepper spray around small children, etc). I had a Kimber Pepperblaster and had to use it on someone who was an imminent threat to myself, my wife, and infant daughter. It took WAAAAAAY too long (maybe 10-15 seconds) for this guy to feel the effects of the pepper gel. He was startled that he just had red goo shot on the bridge of his nose but he was wearing sunglasses so the gel had to drip into his eyes before he felt the burn. In the end the Pepperblaster did what it was supposed to, but if he was more determined I would have been going hands on with this guy for sure. Stream OC spray is totally the way to go. It is aerosolized and gets into eyes, sinuses and mouth much quicker and also has more range than most handheld fogs/cones. I don't have much experience with foam OC sprays but they instantly turn to liquid when they hit the target and in theory would be a good alternative to stream OC spray. Bottom line, if you're at all self defense minded ALWAYS have OC spray on you! As stated, per FBI crime stats, 80% of all violent attacks DO NOT warrant lethal force. Have less lethal on hand!

Not gonna say OC spray isn't a (usually) effective device, but it does have its limitations. Some can be ameliorated with training, some cannot. In my opinion, ESPECIALLY if you are not carrying a firearm, you should have a second less-lethal weapon on your person. I favor a collapsible baton because it extends your reach and will never run out of whupass. But whatever option(s) you choose, you had damn well know very well how to use them - what parts of your adversary are the most vulnerable to your weaponry and know how to use them to your best advantage. If you just casually lift a can of OC spray in a bad guy's direction, he's gonna grab it from you and stream it into YOUR face. Stay the hell away from trouble. If you see anything resembling trouble, get away as quickly as you can. Your first line of defense should always be avoidance. ALWAYS.

Very true. It has been said at my company that Samoans and some native Americans and even some Hispanic people seem to have a high tolerance for the stuff. I know myself personally it hurt quite a bit. Honestly I’d trust a taser over the pepper spray but a tool is better than no tool and I give you major props for carrying while running!
@vanivanov9571
@vanivanov9571 6 лет назад
I'd say a taser is more likely to fail than pepper spray, so I wouldn't recommend it. +Katherine King , You might want to try spraying a little of the pink stuff onto a towel/whatever and smelling it, and see how overpowering it is to you. If it's too tame, you'll want to get something new. You could also try taking a whiff directly, if you want to really test your tolerance.
@Liberty_Bull
@Liberty_Bull 6 лет назад
Van Ivanov you know I’d agree that a taser is more likely to fail, however when it DOES make good contact it normally has its full effect regardless of any personal pain tolerance, drugs notwithstanding Pepper spray on the other hand will almost never fail to deploy, however its effectiveness is subject to the suspects potential tolerance It’s an interesting trade off, reliability of mechanism vs effectiveness of the mechanism.
@MrCrumb34

Saber sells pink pepper sprays and it's all the same formula. It's also a very common brand so if that's the kind you have you're ok.
@MrCrumb34
@MrCrumb34 6 лет назад
I think Van Ivanov was referring to how tasers fail often even when they hit people, not that they might miss fire. If the juice doesn't go through the right nerves it won't incapacitate them. When they work, they work well but I would recommend pepper spray over a taser any day.

For all people who are ordering spray after watching this video: Be sure to get a can or two of the inert training version of the spray as well if it’s offered. It is really useful to familiarize yourself with the real world range of the spray as well as how to aim it, how it feels to defeat any of its safety mechanisms as well as how hard you have to press the button. I know Saber Red’s training Gel has pretty accurate stream consistency and range as the real thing having used both. You can also use the inert as a force on force training tool where you have your friend/sibling/spouse pretend to attack you while you attempt to get the spray from your pocket or purse and then spray them with the inert to get a feel for the reality of employing the tool. Good video as always John and looking forward to the next one!

We have more experience here in Europe, because in most countries it's really really hard (if not impossible) to get a CCW permit, so many people have to use it against deadly threats too. In Europe the Pfeffer KO is a very popular and a very good spray. I carry this, I had to use it one time against a bigger drunken/drugged guy who followed me, and wanted a fight. Instant stop. One time I had to use it against a dog. It also worked instantly. I prefer the FOG version because of the too many stray dogs here. It's really hard to hit a very fast and small target (dog face) under stress with a stream. I also don't really care about the distance, because these fights are usually in contact distance. Wind: it's not really a gas, it's an oily stuff, basically fluid, only with a wider spray pattern, so the FOG is not that much worse. Of course you have to decide what is more important to you. I also recommend to buy minimum 2, but maybe 3 bottles. You have to try out and see how far it goes, how long it works, etc etc. About the agents, we can buy these: PV/OC: One is a natural extract the other is lab made, but basically they are the same. Natural stuff, so very very small chance for an allergic reaction, but very effective against dogs and humans, or humans on drugs - even if they don't feel the pain, they can't see (of course nothing is 100%) CN: the oldest and less effective stuff CS: not so good against drunken and drugged people and animals. It doesn't mean it's not effective, but PV is much better. CR: russian stuff. Nasty against humans, we don't have as much experience as with the others, but they say it's more effective than PV. Also if you wash it water it gets worse. Against dogs PV is more effective - source: some reports from friends of friends, so who knows for sure... You can also buy some mixed stuff too. We also can buy gas guns. They fire blanks filled with different agents, they make a 2-3 meter long gas cloud with a bang when fired. I hope maybe I gave some extra info. If you have some questions, feel free to ask, I'll try to answer. For me it was very surprising too that not every CCW carrier carries some kind of spray too. I think you can say it's almost "mandatory".

I was advised by a criminal defense attorney to NOT carry a less lethal option if I am carrying my firearm. His logic was that if I have to face a jury after a deadly threat situation, a prosecutor can question why the lethal option was used rather than the less lethal option. He made it sound like an obstacle for a legal defense.
@ASPextra
@ASPextra 6 лет назад
You need to replace your attorney because that line of reasoning is specious. Why do cops carry less lethal tools? To handle non-lethal threats. I was taking the example of my local LEO. (that's as easy as it is to refute that argument in court, and ANY attorney worth their salt should know it...the attorney you asked knows nothing of self-defense law, which is common)

One of your concerns about pepper spray occupying your hand - one could always do as I did, working in a prison for many years. I trained myself to utilize pepper spray with my OFF hand. Since it's not being used to actively strike or defend, keeping it in the off hand allows use of the stronger hand and lessens the likelihood of disarming. Also, if using a belt holster, don't go with the popular horizontal style, make sure you keep your holster vertical - this allows immediate deployment without even necessitating removal from the holster. And the user should ALWAYS be aware: If you spray someone, you're spraying yourself with the blowback/cloud. Be prepared. As for brands; Sabre Red is the only OC that ever stopped me in my tracks. LE10 and a couple of other names I no longer remember were unpleasant but I could function. I got a hit of SR and I certainly lost a lot of my fight. Top Cop had a good whallop too, but I could bull through it.

Been trying to find a pepper spray that isn't too big, has a flip top lid instead of the less than reliable slide tab, and a pocket clip. I've had sabre red with the slide tab in a smaller size but had to use tape to keep the tab from sliding in my pocket. I then got a 1.5 oz. Fox 5.3 with flip top lid but it's just a little too big, protrudes too much in pocket. I found a .69 oz. Sabre red with flip top lid and pocket clip. Model mk22. It also takes refills. Waiting to receive it, ordered from ebay. And I wholeheartedly agree that every concealed carrier should have pepper spray on them. Could save you from serious legal problems. If possible it's better to spray and get out of there then have to use your firearm as first and only choice.

Not going to lie, it took me just shy of 20 minutes to recover from a foam OC blast to the face(training). It felt like a million needles in my eyes, face, and mouth. And breathing? Not so much an option because it felt like I swallowed a bucket of broken glass. My face turned into a mucous dripping faucet. Later in life I was presented with a reasonable physical threat, I held him off physically and opted not to spray him. Why? Because I didn't want to have to babysit the asshole after the fact. Another guy in my group took a full blast and it didn't phase him. I felt like a big puss, but that stuff is real. Then I reactivated it in the shower, son of a B. I'd rather take a few punches to the skull than go through that again.

*LOL* Yeah, reminds me of my first experience with OC spray (LE10). Used on a fight, and the asshat using it actually raised the dispenser when I got to the scene and painted me knee to brow. And the supers would not let me go home and change. 10 hours later the effects were pretty much gone... until I needed to use the toilet. I found out just how long that stuff lingers on your hands (far longer than 10 hours!).

Something VERY important to note about STREAM style sprays is the hydraulic needle effect. Generally, if sprayed within 3 feet of the target, the pressure from the stream can actually inject the target with the spray. (Particularly the eyes) This can permanently blind someone if it punctures their eyes. The warnings are on the can, and taught in classes. You can be held accountable in a court room if you hurt someone with it. Get training, and use it.

Enclosed spaces and wind are a big problem to pepper spray, so keep those in mind. You might want to test your own tolerance for your spray, as there is a reasonable chance you'll get hit by it in a struggle. And of course... if you have it, you have to be good at transitioning from it, to empty-hand techniques, to a gun, to a knife and etc.. If you end up drawing pepper spray when you need a gun, God help you.

You omitted a couple of things from an otherwise excellent video. First, get a new can every 2 or 3 years. The propellent can slowly leak out leading to a useless weapon. Secondly a huge advantage of pepper spray is that you can carry it in your weak hand and nobody will see it. I've been doing that for 25 years. If I had a handgun or other weapon in my hand, I'd have had some problems. It's in my hand after I exit the car and on the way to the car. If somebody comes out of nowhere, there is a non-lethal weapon immediately ready for use. As for the pink stuff, I've given cans of the spray to several women over the years. One was frightened of a classmate at a nearby university. I gave her the can I had in my pocket. A few days later she gave it back and proudly showed me her pink can of pepper spray. Same stuff in a different container. It appeals to some women's sense of fashion. It might be a gimmick, but if it will get a person to carry, then it doesn't matter if it's decorated.

The other time it was in my center counsole i was driving while my friend put something in there. Whatever he put was too long so the cover for the center console did not close. He kept pushing the lid trying to close it and still it couldn't close. After about 6 times I smelt a burning smell. So I pulled to the side to see what was burning. He didn't realize that whatever he put in my console actually was pushing on the actuator for the pepper spray. And every time he tried to close the lid, he was spraying the pepper spray in my console. The pepper spray was so nasty, it melted the plastic on the inside of my console. Besides those 2 situations. I used Fox before and even got sprayed in the face. So I can attest that Fox pepper spray is nasty. Perfect for self defense.

Everyone should carry it; literally. It’s legal in all 50 states , NYC and perhaps a few others have some restrictions as to where one can buy it etc. Effectiveness. Far more effective than people think. It’s not a tolerance thing ; it’s a physiological response much like soap in your eyes. Some can pry their eyes open a bit but all still will be severely compromised and give you more than enough time to run away. I would disagree with may not needed it if trained in H2H. There is a good likelihood of a drunk throws a punch at you and your response is a palm heel strike to their nose followed by a takedown , choke out there is a high likelihood you will be charged because your trained. The same laws about excessive force applies to police ( citizens with some enhanced rights ) as well John Q Public. OC can be used in many situations ( state laws vary so check with your attorney) as to when it can be deployed. Often it’s intent. If the aggressor states “ I am going to kill you “ pulls back his fist he has probably crossed the threshold to deploy OC even though he has not struck you. The assailant has demonstrated intent and opportunity and means. I trained in martial arts for 40 years and taught for 15 to LEO, citizens etc including the use of less than lethal tools ). I think your spreading of knowledge is a great service to those that realize it only takes one BG to ruin your day ... or life.
