That's a very clever technique. I never knew that. I too am surprised that calculators don't do this for you---but it's good to know. Math is so amazing.

I can describe it if you'd like. It's really not that hard. 3^x=12 take the natural log (ln) of both sides ln3^x=ln(12) Use rule of logs to change the left side and bring the power to the front xln(3)=ln(12) Divide both sides by ln(3) x=ln(12)/ln(3). Same formula

I can't believe that 'school' calculators in the US don't have a button that allows you to find the log of any number to any base? Ours do and they are used from age 11 onwards. Even if you don't have that then a better approach is to write as 12 = 3^x then take logs to base 10 or e to find x? Same idea but one less formula to remember?

Oh I know! You need an exceptionally fancy calculator to do that. Most just are like "alright you get log (x) (which is log base 10) and ln(x) and you'll like it!"
