Cardi B’s persona wouldn’t work if she was male because the bling era is over and males flaunting their looks and success would just be a generic dime a dozen. Her music makes sense in the context that she does it. I’m sure if a man was making the music Beyoncé was making it wouldn’t be nearly as successful or popular either, but that doesn’t really say much about the talent or quality of their respective works.
Donuts is beautiful, profound, powerful and soulful. My favorite track is Last Donut Of The Night - that track makes time stand still! It isn’t mediocre or overrated in any way. Long live J Dilla
Dan Bing The sampling on that album is just as inventive as his other beats, if not more inventive, because of the lack of equipment he had. You can’t say a song like Don’t cry or Workinonit aren’t impressive as hell. Many of the songs didn’t even have added drum beats. Also, not only is the beat work on here fantastic, but you also have the album concept that puts the album in a completely new light. Whether he intended it or not he made a concept album where he reflects on his death without saying a single word, instead opting for vocal samples. In that context, it makes the album a lot more emotionally resonant than it could have been, and makes for some incredibly powerful moments. That, I personally think, edges this above his production on something like the Fantastic vol. 2, or the Shining.
I think people only hate Donuts cuz it's insanely popular and people think they're being cool by hating on it. Same with Illmatic, 3 Feet High and any other album that gets tons of praise all the time
Bowie and Reznor are both groundbreaking in different ways. In all honesty, I don't think Reznor wants to be "accessible", flashy, and dramatic as Bowie was, and I don't think Bowie would have wanted to be as cold, dark, and serious as Reznor is. That makes Bowie a more household-friendly name as a byproduct, but both are artists doing their thing; one just has a sound that is easier to digest than the other.
Literally one Era of bowie aka ziggy stardust is a flashy type, bowie has been dark and has been in a dark place and created a charector, thin white duke, and yet if someone was dressed as the th in white duke it is still a recodnizable character , not as recodnizable as ziggy but still recodnizable. Also if david bowie aka a person who was a man involved with groupies, and drugs and sexuality is easier to digest than an emo person I mean come on.
@@ilovecody7514 Eh, it had a few good songs. As usual for Ghostemane albums. He's a decent artist, but he works better from a song basis, not on the flow of an album, imo.
Bowie has his place in the history of art and music that is uniquely his own. Trent Reznor also has his place in the history of art and music that is uniquely his own. Nobody will replace Bowie, just as nobody will replace Reznor.
This is a fair assessment. As Melon pointed out Bowie had a ton of different looks and vibes meanwhile TR has had ...varying hair lengths. Trent himself has said that if he can someday be mentioned on not even the same paragraph but the same page as Bowie historically he'll have done ok.
Reznor was great until that with teeth bullshit. That garbage was really pop rock which is very unlike them. Give me "were in this together" or "march of the pigs" all day over that nonsense
Because the fact thst bowie was mentoring Reznor in his early days and the fact that God Break Down the Door exist is a competent reason to say, david and trent are the same
I think the person asking the question worded it all wrong. I don't think Trent will ever get the cultural recognition that Bowie got, mostly because I don't think that is achievable for any artist these days. I do think that Reznor is the natural heir to Bowie however. Melon is clearly bias to favouring loud, "Angery" Reznor and has proved it time and time again.
Although very talented, the melon just will never have the cultural impact as a reviewer like daymdrops. He just doesn't have the look or commercial appeal of a daymdrops. Not to discredit the melon, but I once went to a Halloween party as the melon and was beat to an inch of my life for dressing as a clans men.
@@davidsb1999 couldn't believe how much airtime he gave it and when he ended it with "you, my friend, are on crack" I was like Anthony please I have a family 😭😭😂
That donuts comment was one of the most out of pocket arguments I’ve seen on this series. Its really really sad how even though we live in the “(prod. ____)” era people still have such a lack of appreciation for what truly great producers do
Mr Fantano always holds my respect to the highest degree for the way in which he calls people out on their uneducated and biased opinions and why they’re wrong. Fantano always keeps an open mind when it comes to certain ideologies, and if they seem illogical, he’ll say it as it is. Realism is hella importanr in discussions such as these, and Melon will forever hold my respect for his viewpoints and arguments. Bless this man 🙏
I think what the person is trying to say at 0:31 is that that everyone would judge cardi b by her actual talent if she was a man, but since she's a female in a predominantly male genre people think she makes quality music.
I would say that there are plenty of men within hip hop that also don’t have much talent, yet are still famous. So I’d be more inclined to say that the aspect of these people such as their branding and song writing, that perhaps we don’t understand is their reason for fame. There are so many untalented artists that are famous that i doubt its as simple as simply whether they are man or woman.
DAPHNE as you girls said righteously There are plenty of men that are untalented So breaking through as an untalented men is tougher for simple odds statistics So being a girl and thus facing less completion to get notice as special from a smaller bunch is more useful to her than starting as a lot of other untalented men.
As a super NIN/Trent Reznor fan, I can tell you that comment clearly came from a NIN fanboy, who vicariously wants to see Trent live up to that status, simply due to knowing how heavily Bowie influenced his work through out the years. While I wish it weren't the case, I believe you are absolutely right about his influence not reaching the same extent as Bowie's does and will continue to do so.
...like how would trent reznor even become a household name... that would imply he gets a shitload of mainstream success so more people would know him. but I have the feeling he's more underground now than he was at the beginning of his career.
In regards to the first Tweet, the point was that bias, whether it be subconscious or conscious, can make for a less reliable review, as many individuals are looking to find out whether a piece or record is well made/crafted objectively.
Trent Reznor is an amazing musician and producer and deserves way more cultural cred. He'll never reach that Bowie level though... I mean, we're talking MJ levels of stardom that kinda have to happen organically.
It's not that she's a woman, it's that she popped up at the right time. Nicki's credibility is waning and feminism is at an all-time high in recent years (and Kodak Black was a thing). Perfect time for another female rapper to arrive. Had Cardi shown up even 5 years ago, we'd have forgot about her after one song.
Completely agree about old vs new HipHop, Trent vs David and especially the argument of "This would be this, if that person was that" .....they FUCKING AREN'T. Okay? Also I didn't actually know that the world knew about the Donouts album haha. I got it when it first came out and I thought it was wicked. But every time I mentioned it I found myself being the only one who knew. To be fair, most of my people aren't into my genre (HipHop) and/or aren't music nuts so... But anyways, I'm glad I want the only one who saw the genius in the point of the album and how significant it was. Thanks for sharing that one!
I have no idea why Cardi B is successful, I was late to the party and listened to Bodak Yellow not understanding how it was so popular. Then I heard she was super funny and likable, so checked out a few interviews and didn't understand that hype either. In short: no idea why she's popular.
I'd like to remind you commentor sir, that twilight was popular.. Kim is still a thing.. Just don't question why things are mainstream they just are.. It doesn't matter if has any talent or any good.
she was a reality tv star that's why probably. people flock to those who have a Kardashian style publicity and all the drama around her. its definitely not bc of her intelligence or musical creativeness.
I don't really know shit about hip hop culture or the behind the scenes aspect to the genre, but I'm so interested in it and wish I could better understand the history and obscure artists.
trent reznor WILL NOT replace david bowie's influence or probably even come close to it, but I do think he will be remembered as one of the all time greats of music in a sort of similar way to david bowie or like bob dylan
Let's argue: Anthony is only popular because he has a lot of musical knowledge and has a good way of communicating then and his opinions on albums to us.
I mean you can easily swap cardi and put someone else in her place with those beats n “rhymes” and not notice the difference. Meanwhile, Ashanti can sing and has more talent but only sold 24tickets to a recent show. That sucks.
@Billboardguy1 you make valid points. ashanti isn't the strongest example of what i was trying to relay since she hasn't been relevant in a long time. i think my opinion is that i appreciate artists with REAL talent. alicia keys is a stronger example, (or Rhapsody from the rap viewpoint). and yes, i have negative bias against cardi because that "stripper turned rapper" thing doesn't do it for me. also when she was on IG Live talking about how good she pleases her man , and claiming she would win a d*ck sucking contest. Like, no one wants to her that. i can't separate a person from their music and vice versa. she's lasted longer the the standard 15mins of fame; i give her "1hour30mins" of fame before she hits that ceiling and fizzles out.
Premier league current standings: 1. Manchester City 2. Liverpool 3. Chelsea 4. Arsenal 5. Tottenham 6. Bournemouth 7. Watford 8. Manchester United Lololololol 9. Everton 10. Wolves
Nine Inch Nails is lowkey making some of the most interesting music today. It's incredibly modern, weird, fun and intriguing what Trent and Atticus have come up with over the last few years. But yeah i don't know if he'll ever replace Bowie.
Donuts has dozens of sampled vocals that could be referencing death and his fear of it. For example one line "It's dat real!", he chops it in such a way that you hear "Is death real?" in the track Stop. I don't believe it's just a beat tape.
Dear Melon, Very good video. Your display of argumentative prowess on music is astounding. With this being said, can you please review "Fork in The Pot" by The Alchemist featuring WSG, Conway and Schoolboy Q? I'd like to know your opinion on the combination of Buffalo and Compton. It would make my day. Sincerely, Your brother from the land of our mother, Korptchov Fadibech
