To really see if musicians are industry plants, we should force them to go a week without any sunlight. If they die because they cannot photosynthesize, we know they are a plant.

People gotta learn what an industry plant is. Olivia can't be an industry plant because she has never marketed herself as coming from the underground or having an organic rise in fame. She's pretty open about her Disney background and all of it is out in the open for the public to see. Having industry connections is not inherently the same as being an industry plant.

Most folks commenting that “classical musicians just perform other peoples music” are really exposing how ignorant they are. In the classical world the composer is more akin to a screenwriter/director and the musicians are the actors that bring it to life. A conductor in a way is a bit more like a cinematographer/co-director. You wouldn’t scoff at Daniel day-Lewis for acting in someone else’s movie lol. It’s a collaborative effort. I don’t know where this take on classical musicians came from recently but holy hell is it dumb.

I thought an “industry plant” was a super specific thing - Like, the formation of Peter, Paul & Mary was literally a producer thinking “Anti-war folk music is really taking off... Let’s get in on this!” and then he auditioned people to form a specific group that he, the industry insider, planned from the start. There’s also an element of deception there since, to the public, they seemed indie. Disney stars are really different, imo... but there’s no Wikipedia page for the term so I have no idea if others think it means the same thing I do lol.

In order to combat industry plants, we have to create industry rocks. People who are inserted into the music industry with the full intention of going nowhere. Not even that they wind up going nowhere, you have no music or anything.

As a classical musician, your last take was perfect. Plenty of great new music out there. Also, performing music and composing music are two different skill sets- you don’t have to do both. Most classical musicians are perfectly content dedicating their lives to doing a great job playing other people’s music, after all, there’s 500 years of great music to play through

As someone who grew up learning the classical guitar, modern classical compositions are really something special and interesting. I just wish the typical audience for classical music were more willing to listen to these newer works than the centuries old classics that everyone knows.

I just don't like how tiktok doesn't make songs popular, but makes like 45-second clips of songs popular and it's an even further progression away from people listening to albums. Not that I think everyone should be listening to full vinyls but I feel like there's a reason why so many people I know barely even listen to full songs and just switch between them halfway through

I love metal but good god yes there is a TON of elitism/gatekeeping in that community.

As a self-described metalhead, I can confirm that there are certainly a fair share of elitist dickheads in the metal community. I've had the joy of knowing a few personally. In my experience, I think it comes from the fact that the genre tends to attract people who were outcasts growing up and there's a certain amount of resentment there that they then translate into resentment towards other more "popular" or "mainstream" genres of music. I was certainly like that for a little while prior to some introspection which led me to open up to other genres and I now proudly have a large eclectic range of music I enjoy.

Also, if you like music written for orchestra, from "classic" classic to every modern iteration of that, it is just great to be able to go see some favourite concert live, played to the very best of human skill. I had the luck of being taken to a concert for the first time back in school. It was a "modern" set, so I was introduced to Prokofiev's "Peter and the wolf" live when I was like 12. That truly changed me a bit. I'll be always grateful for those who choose to keep this format of music alive.

“Industry plant” means someone they try to pass off as an independent artist. Usually in hip hop. That aside, corporate, major label music at this point is purely a manufactured product, like Cheetos. It has nothing to do with art. It has almost nothing to do with music. They pick someone they think is marketable, usually with pre-existing fame (like “Bhad Babie” from Dr. Phil). They barely need to be able to sing or rap. Autotune takes care of that. They have pre-existing teams of producers and songwriters, and they’ll have ten or more on one track, manufacturing what they hope will be a pop hit, by committee. It is the most purely cynical process imaginable. Some may say, “it’s always been that way”. Not true. There has always been pop music. But the window for experimentation has narrowed to nothing. Back in the 70s, the major labels would sign rock bands, and let them develop, writing their own songs, for two or three albums without producing hardly any sales. They’d get tour support, studio time, everything. Now, there are no artists at the major labels. There are no musicians. There are only jingle writers and celebrities (or would be celebrities). The celebrity is the product spokesperson, the music is the jingle. And that’s it. Absolutely nothing more. Increasingly, they’re just making really obvious copies of existing songs (Olivia Rodrigo has a Paramore ripoff), or sampling existing songs. It’s the same thing with Hollywood, trying to cash in on “Fast & Furious 27”, or “Star Wars Episode 90: You Will Eat This Dog Food And Like It”. Basically, anybody who listens to anything put out by a major label at this point has zero taste in music, only cares about trends and clout, and likes being a sucker.

Being a metalhead myself for more than two decades now, I can see where that person is coming from, but I can honestly say that, if anything, the metal communitys has gotten better recently. Especially in underground circles. Of course, if you only look online, you are going to see mostly the toxic part of it, because that's what gains the most traction online, but in person is a whole different thing. Metalhead are even getting more eccletic, something that would seem impossible in the past. Even Fenriz, the truest of the true, posts about electronic music and stuff like Aurora.

As someone who's gone to live classical music shows, I've seen people play their own composed pieces. I even remember there was one duo that had decades of experience in the industry and for the show (this was college) they performed their own piece. What an odd take.

They're Disney backed, which personally feels more appropriate than conflating them into the term for industry plants. Industry plants have already been described in the other comments better, but to recap, they're basically artists whose info is being covered up to be under the pretense of being an indie artist when they have actually been on the hands of big influential members of the entertainment industry. Olivia Rodrigo and the many other Disney artists that came before her had the pattern where people knew they came from Disney TV shows originally already and then were made to become pop stars. To the best of my knowledge there wasn't any effort from Disney to hide those facts, so they were basically given a great amount of backing to be part of the pop music scene, not be planted insincerely into the indie scene.

Overplayed songs aren't necessarily bad (though many are), but a song needs to be at a certain high level of quality, to remain listenable after being overplayed. At that point you could argue that they're not overplayed.

Yungblud literally was on a Disney show for basically half of a season, quit because he didn't enjoy it, and wanted to have a proper music career, went out and started playing to tiny crowds in normal sized pubs, working his way up. Just having "been" on a Disney show isn't really an easy ticket to stardom. Even now you might think he is hugely popular but he's playing 2k seaters at best in the US, and he barely played a 5k gig in the UK, and isn't a top line festival act, He's only 2nd line at Reading because the third line and 4th line are sort of an "everybody else" category, although before the pandemic, Denzel Curry was billed above him at Coachella and now he is billed above Denzel, but it also is in the UK and he has had a #1 album in the UK, so that probably helped him out there. But it was through actual touring his ass off, not the way some ex-Disney people sort of get handed shit.

She’s a highly skilled young violinist, and the video provides a great insight into the intention behind each choice. Might open your eyes to how much care is put into each sound.
