Love all this videos that show what one can do with one light source! Daniel Norton maybe in the future it will be nice to see how to go about using the one light source but in a full body shot(head to toe). Thanks ADORAMA for having all these great content on your channel in order to have a better idea when one shops at your business!

Hi Daniel, I bought my first beauty dish , it's a 50cm silver Bowens mount...I'm planning to use it with constant lighting for video interviews etc. but I notice that around the edges of the light, it casts a distinct ring shadow ( perhaps caused by the fold around the inside edge of the bowl ) the light doesn't fall off to the edges cleanly like a fresnel lens produces...I don't want to eliminate that shadow by using a diffusion cloth because I like the hard quality of the silver bowl...do you have any suggestions? should I look for a bowl that doesn't fold in at the end? does a white beauty dish also creates that ring shadow? Thanks!

Thank you for this in depth video. I especially like the first and last way of shooting. Not the second one because you had two lights showing in her eyes which for me didn’t felt natural. The second light came from the silver reflector and showed below her eyeball. But as mentioned, thank you for this in depth video. Just a request can you show a more home style way of getting great professional light, also with shooting with a Fujifilm camera like the x series? Thanks, Michael

Daniel, really good to see you work with harder, more interesting lighting in this video. I noticed something and I'm not one to usually comment on youtube videos. Your images popping up were inconsistent in exposure shot to shot. I've used legacy Profoto in my studio for some time (B4, D4) and really depend on their shot-to-shot consistency (it's a substantial factor why I use Profoto). I'm thinking this inconsistency may be due to Profoto's new direction of more consumer or pro-lite lighting, which you were using. Anyway, I'm not intending to critique anything, I like your lighting, I just wanted to point out what I observed.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
This was caused by the fact that I had the strobes set to TTL, thus it was "re-metering" with every frame. If you noticed, when I switched to manual, the exposure normalized. Having been a Profoto user for many years, I can say that they are just as consistent now as they ever have been in my experience.
@johnleighdesigns
@johnleighdesigns 3 года назад
great stuff enjoyed this - wonder whether using a strobe or speedlight without modifier is closer to look of sun in your view or better to add some sort of modifier like a reflector to avoid too mauch harshness but still retain the punch with defined shadows
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
The main issue with just using a bare strobe or speedlight is that it will not be even and sunlight tends to fall evenly

Hi Daniel Ive been binge re-watching your amazing onSet shoots and one item burning in my mind in case you might respond! For reasons of space and travelling light for location shoots Ive only ever been using speedlites but I do wonder in your wisdom and experience whether apart from strobes having more power, faster recycling etc if there is any difference in actual light quality once a strobe or speedlite is using a modifer like umbrella or softbox ? Thanks so much !
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
Like most things, that depends. If it's a very small softbox for instance and your speedlight does not have a wide/even spread it may be different, but I would say in most cases the actual quality of light from a good speedlight is the same as a good strobe when going through the same modifier.

Dear Daniel, first of all: thank you so much for your great content. It is always a pleasure to check out you content. Without being cheesy I can tell that I saw them all so far :P I have a question: where do I find (or how is that thing called) that "joint" you are using to connect the flash with beauty dish on the c-stand arm, as seen here from minute 5? I really appreciate your help. Kind regards from Germany :)

Daniel, great video as always from you. I don’t have a beauty dish but I plan to use a small octa by Elinchrom and not add any of the diffuser panels but, I do have their different coloured discs that you can insert in the body of the light, which looks similar to the disc you have in the middle of a beauty dish. Do you think this will give a close match to an actual beauty dish?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
In my experience, the "soft" type beauty dishes and small octa-softboxes create a cool look that in some ways can be compared to a "true" beauty dish but are not exactly the same, even in the case where deflectors are available. That being said, give it a shot and compare the difference for yourself, it's a fun experiment... And let me know what you like!

When using a single light the Profoto TTL system prefers you do it that way.

Daniel, I'm new to portrait photography and have a question. Why do you switch from TTL to manual during a series of shots? Thanks.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
TTL metering will make adjustments for each frame you shoot, and since it is based on the reflected meter in the camera. They can sometimes be a little inconsistent, so switching to manual gives me consistency

What size is the beauty dish?
@gentlegnt
@gentlegnt 3 года назад
Question, please...I own a "Glow" 32 or 36 inch collapsible beauty dish with a grid. It is NOT the hard metal one as you show. Can this "dish" in theory, give me similar results or can your looks be accomplished by having the huge metal beauty dish?? (Thanks!)
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
In my experience, the "soft" type beauty dishes create a cool look that in some ways can be compared to a "true" beauty dish but are not exactly the same, even in the case where deflectors are available. In addition, your modifiers are larger so will be a bit softer in general (The Profoto dish is 22 inches), that being said, give this a shot and see how it works out, I'd love to see the results.

Every camera sold today blows aways my old Nikon D700 out of the water and I took some amazing photos with that camera. It doesn't matter. Whatever a photographer prefers to shoot is the best camera for them period.

A mask with an exhaust valve does not filter the air you breathe out. Such a mask therefore doesn't protect others in case you have an asymptomatic infection. It's kind of "asocial" to wear such a mask. Be considerate of the health of your model, and wear masks without valves.
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
As it turns out, I have added an additional 2.5 filter inside the mask to prevent such things, but it's good to know we have you out here protecting the public with your assumptions.
@haxxy40
@haxxy40 3 года назад
That mask is useless, you know? It gives little protection to you and no protection to the ones around you. Those exhaust valves would expel any particles right out without a filter!
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 3 года назад
I have added an additional internal filter, but thanks for commenting and making assumptions
