You need to write a book called "How to Be Your Own Best Friend." Seriously, the things you say just in this one podcast is pure gold.

The identity clutter is a big thing for me. I identify as a reader. My RU-vid channel and indeed my entire social media presence is centered on that identity but I don’t have the time to read all the books I own because I’m a mom now. This podcast is motivating me to accept the reality of my current identity. Some of the books I acquired in the past few years aren’t even books I want to keep anymore so they are clutter now. Thanks, Cas. I hadn’t thought about it quite like that before

I love it that you said this is who I am, I am a mom… That’s my very heart and soul as well. It feels kind of scary when your kids leave home, but then the grandchildren come, and you realize all over again, this is who I am. Grandma - I was a good mom, but I’m a pretty awesome Grandma❤️

You have been all over my house during this podcast. I dumped the junk in the refrigerator and put away clean dishes. I filled my pill boxes for the week and cleaned out my purse. I also rounded up the dirty dishes and started a shopping list. And I have the ingredients out for making French Waffles - more on that later. Whenever I have a task I don't want to do, I find one of your videos to watch while I'm doing it, so it makes it easier to do the disgusting thing. Give your craft supplies to senior centers or nursing homes. They will love it. I have some phone wire from my husband's jobs that I'm giving to girls who make bracelets and maybe other jewelry. Free supplies for them! I also keep my clean egg cartons for my young friends who raise chickens and sell the eggs. Free packaging for them! Finally, I give away my firewood to the neighbors because the woodstove is their only heat source and they can sure use it. I can't burn the wood due to COPD according to my doctor. If you think hard enough your trash can be someone's treasure.

Replaced a lightbulb in my bedroom ceiling light. Moved over laundry. Folded/ hung/ put away the load of laundry that was in the dryer. Mentally prepared to attack my Identity Clutter!! I ate up the last couple of my Japanese candies - yay for natural decluttering - while going through this past year of payslips & bank statements, filing them properly, and then shredding the oldest year of them. It's usually something i like to do in April - with the tax year changeover - but I'd been procrastinating it 🤭 (We're renters, so landlords like to see a couple of years of financial proof you can pay rent, UK). TLDR: An inch stack of paperwork is leaving 🥳 ... Also managed to get a few expired makeup & skincare products off my dresser so that's a bonus; both visually now AND avoiding the breakouts they can cause in future 😊 ... And now I'm gonna find another "declutter with me" video to make more progress on other items/rooms 🤭

I love listening to you cas, your so good at making me realise that I have to much craft stuff , but it's so hard to get rid of things as I know it will cost me later , ....but....I know how much this is going to save my life once I can overcome my anxiety attacks. So I know you said do it now while I'm listening to you, and that would be cool unfortunately it's late at night here in th U.K and I'm more motivated in the morning, and now that I'm moving home it feels like it might be easier, it takes me a long time as I'm disabled and in my late 60s. But I'm gonna try x thanks cas x

We had a carload full of stuff to Goodwill. My goal is to make a trip to Goodwill 1-2 times a month. Now i have just a few areas left to really hit hard. Im had so much clutter in our old house and way too much stuff. We decluttered a BUNCH before the move and even more since we have moved!!!

Thanks Cass, I needed this push today. Have been decluttering for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I went through sentimental cards and letters and filled a black bin bag - actually leaving space in my underbed storage box! But my identity clutter is something I haven't really pondered. I'm a creative so have all the bits and bobs and although I went through my crafting supplies 3 times already, I now realise there are a handful of additional items that I really don't need. There's more I could donate, definitely, so I'll be jumping on that tomorrow. (I was going through my finances while listening to you today! :-) Wishing you a wonderful rest of your weekend.

Ok so I got delayed by two events this morning and I was just able to get back to my bathroom and do just a bit of cleaning (Flybaby person). And I found you and Dana through the Minimal Mom. I’ve listened over and over and over but never actually did stuff with the person. All the stuff helped me so much but I have to do on my own in quiet till today. Because I had to finish up, I did it with you. It worked. Had some work done in my bathroom and had to get it back in order. Taking me forever till now. Thank you Cas.

I’m dealing with long COVID and everything seems overwhelming to tackle with - although I am one of the lucky ones who can walk and even work a bit. Not procrastinating is key for my everyday life and helps me to stay on top of things; -ish, that is, and honestly, I get help from sweet people, but there still is enough to do for me. So thank you, dear, wise Cass, for stressing the point of “do it now, if you can”, future me is always so happy about things she hasn’t left to do. Does this make sense? Brainfog is 🤬

Cass I’m very similar to you in the sense that I shop for my fantasy self more then my reality life, one thing I’ve found to do is to think of others when I see something that makes something desired easier. Example: My in-laws were wanting to set up a play room for their grandchildren one thing they needed were size appropriate containers to store toys in, now when I’m on my phone or out in town if I find a toy organizer for a good deal I let them know. If I find something I can actually use I already have to have the space cleaned out and ready for it to be used, otherwise I don’t let myself get it. My oldest child loves to play with their toys, but can have a hard time cleaning up before moving on to a new toy set, I wanted to start doing the container method for most of the toys but I didn’t want the idea to flop on it’s face, instead I started with cardboard boxes and put most of the toys away, when my child wants a new toy (going from blocks to a character themed or dress up toy blocks) they have to put current toys away completely and correctly before the new toy can come out. That went very well for 1 month and then I felt ready to let myself make a “big investment” into something my fantasy self wanted, now it’s no longer my fantasy self but my reality self. If it hadn’t worked with the cardboard boxes I wouldn’t have made the investment in the quality storage containers but my child is now putting away toys by themselves before requesting a new toy be gotten out.

I feel like such a failure when it comes to keeping a clean, tidy and nice home, both inside and outside. My husban tells me to stop watching cleaning videos on tiktok and he thinks that is why i’m complaining about the house. We moved into our house 2 years ago, it’s my husbands childhood home, so while we were moving in, his parents were moving out, so we’ve been living with their clutter as well as our own clutter. We had our second child in December 2023, at the same time we were remodelling the kitchen, my husband said it woul be done by christmas, and here we are almost 7 months later and it’s still not finushed. I am so ashamed of it. I suck at cleaning too, i know i don’t wash the bathroom enough, and change the bedsheets as often as i should. My hysband says he doesn’t care how the house looks like and i feel like he never does any of the regular chores unless i ask him to. I wish i loved cleaning, but i hate it so much, really hate. Please help me Cass ❤

Cas, when you say “deep down, you know you don’t need it” And that I’m keeping the things out of fear, and that it’s identity clutter. And that I don’t actually need it or even want it, What’s that going to feel like, when I get rid of all those things? Those 5 books I’m keeping because I want my kids to read them someday and know they’re my favorites, but I never read them, because I read on my phone instead. The bag I bought because of who I wanted to be. Guilt and shame. It’s toxic? Even if it’s Part of me. Even if it’s all there really is in my house that’s actually mine? Other than the plants. I don’t have any stuff, really, except for those identity things and the things I really do use every day It’s trash night. Should I just do it?

@yzolakitchi
@yzolakitchi 7 дней назад
My guess is, that if you are asking, there may be some guilt surrounding letting it go? Remember the item isn't the person, or your relationship with them. It represents one moment of thoughtfulness on their part, which is likely one of many - so you don't need to give it more weight than it represents. If it's super sentimental but you really don't use it, I would take some photos of it, (if you are into journaling/scrapbooking/or even just to have on your phone) then let it leave your home. Depending on how much energy you have, your options are then selling it, giving it away, or donating it. When I have something of value that I don't have time to sell, I write a little note for it before donating it to charity. That way, I feel it will be more appreciated and the charity can raise more funds from it, by marking it at the appropriate price. e.g. "Owned for 2 years, hardly used, in excellent, fully working condition, RRP £130". 🥰 Hope that helps a little in your ponderings. Good Luck

@@lylagray9669 It's always tough with those sentimental items. What I've found is that with some items I kept on my first decluttering, I was able to let go of, the third time round. So if it isn't taking up space you need and it doesn't make you feel guilty every time you look at it, letting it stay for now might be kinder on yourself and halt the back and forth decision making in your minds. If you have a go around in 6 months and declutter, you might look at it with fresh eyes and think, jeeze, we really do not use or need this. Alternatively, if you have the mental bandwidth, you could do some researching to find it the perfect home. I gave a beloved doll to a toy museum who let the children play with vintage toys when they visit, and a cherished laptop, (it had been gifted to me by a special someone and got me through 7 house moves and a university degree!) ended up going to a computing museum as it was obsolete and an international one that they didn't have. Without knowing what type of item it is, is there perhaps a charity/care home/hostel that might be connected in some way to the person who gifted it to you? That way you could pass it on in a more meaningful way, perhaps? Best wishes, whatever you decide. It's good that you can discuss it with hubby 🙂

Taking pictures doesn't help with identity clutter?

Hi! I really decluttered everything already. I have stopped being minimalist. And now I really love the opposite. It's a very big waste. Maybe try to stop yourself in the shop while you are buying all that unnecessary stuff

I get grossed out wearing something new without washing it first, you just don’t know how many people have touched, handled, sneezed or rubbed their noses on it in the factory.

I like wearing new things without washing them first. When they’re nice and new and the laundry hasn’t damaged it at all yet

Fantasy clutter….ugh!!! It’s the WORST!! ALL the “self improvement” items can most definitely be BIG BULLIES!!😡.

you have really good advice and examples, however; I've been watching you long enough to know that you don't really take your own advice. you seem to jump from one fantasy self to the next. I also know that people who can do this must have alot of extra money to purchase all these things and then just get rid of them. I agree with you that the money has already been spent, and getting rid of said things isn't going to bring that money back. I know someone whom I've been trying to help declutter and it only makes room for more stuff!!!! uggg. Let's all take a step back and think about it, when I was young I had absolutely no clutter issues, do you know why? because I couldn't afford to buy extra stuff!!!! this is above all else a money/spending issue. People are using shopping/buying as a form of self-medication, just like smoking, drinking, gambling, overeating, etc. you can cut the weed off when you mow, but until you pull it out by the ROOT, it will still keep coming back. We all need to find out why and what we are self-medicating for through our purchasing and why we can't release these things to keep a clean and tidy home and life.

I think this is a clash between a certain personality type, which in the Enneagram would be the Entertainer type, and the general economy that persons grew up in. For about the past 15 years, there have been close to 0 percent interest rates and also cheap goods coming in from China to North America. This meant it didn't take too much money to acquire new things so those with those personalities in the first place got into this cycle of purge and replace. I don't think it is good for people, and gets us into real issues like the constant rehoming of pets and human rights abuses abroad from labor not getting adequate pay or working conditions. But I do wish there would be a recognition that not everyone watching these posts of Cas are of that personality type- others may be just deep collectors whose collections are a little too much, some may be smart shoppers who don't really have the space to store bulk purchases anymore. But many others who watch these posts may be just professional organizers themselves, or those who own cleaning businesses, or those trying to help out friends as you say you are only to have them acquire more once space is cleared out. I do think the latter problem needs to be addressed; perhaps rent the golf clubs instead of buy. But there are other reasons people want to organize, such as to have reference materials when they are writers, or to work efficiently in their workshop, or to store temporarily if they are in a situation where they can't bring much stuff (LA or New York, for example). It would be helpful to have some videos on other organization issues rather than just ADHD, and addressing root ADHD clutter as you say, would be a help, too.

This is probably a little gross, but you cried your eyes out. What eyes are you using now? What do those eyes identify as now for your life?
