I think the only reason Family Guy hasn't been brought down is that they do go after everyone. They can cross the line with their humor because they cross ALL of the lines.

You know the funny thing is the lessons in those dark humor parts. The special needs hungry games one. It funny because most of them are just so nice and wouldn't want to hurt a fly. Where as normal people might easily go so savage when things are different. Just imagining the possibilities after civilization falls how things could be. Normal is an illusion to what chaos is in the minds of most.

John Oliver does that kind of humor too. He'll take a serious subject and throw humor about parts of it in. It doesn't go as borderline (and arguably beyond) as Family Guy, but it does make understanding the subject more enjoyable and make you want to continue hearing about it
