@@su-rv2uq Mary Poppins is helping the family, but the character with the greatest arc and who actually changes, who was saved by Mary, was Mr. Banks. That's why the title of the film about the making of this movie is called "Saving Mr. Banks", Travers' book was based around the father, and Disney made sure the movie that way too. George Banks started as a cold, stern father, but Mary Poppins helped him realize what he was missing, what his children were missing, if he didn't let them feed the birds or fly a kite. Yes Mary came to nanny the children, but she saved Mr. Banks
I heard a story about David Tomlinson. That he was at lunch in a diner one day and a little girl asked him if he could sing "Fly a Kite." David, in his 70s at this point and without missing a beat, jumped up and began to sing and dance just like this scene here. He was applauded with a standing ovation. He must've been a real sweet guy to do something like that :)
The reason this song is so beautiful, is because it represents that Mary Poppins job is done and the family is now fixed and they don't need her anymore. It's both beauty of and tragic. This story was never about Mary Poppins, it was always about George Banks. What Mary Poppins was there to show him is that, his no no-nonsense, strict father type dosn't work. His children just needed a loving father, and once Geroge learned that. Mary Poppins was free to leave. It a glorious show of triumph of the human spirt and how the little things in life such as "feeding the birds" or "flying a kite" is what makes life worth while.
Not just about Mr Banks, but the mother too. She also learned that she had to pay attention to her children, which she hadn't been. Everything wasn't just about Mr Banks.
Honestly, Mary Poppins is just a movie that gets better as you get older. When you’re younger, you love this movie because of the catchy songs and all the magic going on. When you’re older, you realize it’s a movie about trying to restore a broken familly. Seriousiy, this movie is amazing! Will never grow old even after 57 years
Agreed!! I couldn’t of described it better myself. I am 30, but this movie was a token of my childhood and I still love it!! The remake/sequel was fun and pretty decent, but the original is unbeatable!!
@Jerry D. Metz, I never said the word understood in my comment. I merely mentioned the different reasons as to why this movie is beloved between children and adults. Ask a child why they love Mary Poppins and they’ll most likely talk about the singing or magic
***** you could say that like mary poppins gave the real Mr Banks a happy ending, saving mr banks gave pl travers a happy ending, it didn't bother me one bit, everyone should have a happy ending was the whole point of the movie.
Voba1000 There is a movie I think it's new it's called the dream of walt disney and it explains the story of the writer and the problems they had while making the movie! it's really great I liked it :D You can see the how she (the writer) was really tight and Disney was the contrary :p but I don't know at the end I think she liked the movie or that's what I would like to think XD
All I was saying was the way they portray the song in the movie gives you a better perspective on what the song meant to P.L. Travers and the connection she made with it in Saving Mr.Banks. I don't remember saying it changes you're childhood memory, that's a little dramatic don't you think, please calm down *****.
***** Saving Mr Banks was Disney's way of saying Sorry I think. Yes it was very late, but I think they know what they did, and did the best they could to make it right.
Learning the story of David Tomlinson himself and how he was actually a devoted and loving parent in real life, one who avoided showbiz circles and regularly turned down celebrity gatherings just to spend as much time with his children as possible... It makes seeing George's character transformation all that much sweeter.
Used to watch this movie with my dad, he always used to sing this song while we were skipping across the sidewalk holding me and my sisters hands, he passed away a few years ago, this video just came across my youtube suggestions, i'm in tears
its really compounded by her short talk with her umbrella after this song about how she helps so many parents and children come together but they always forget her as soon as they find each other.
Yes, it certainly does. We had chorus as kids in the 5th grade. We sang most of these songs for our parents that year. Let’s go fly a kite was a crowd favorite.
The taking I had on Dawes was, he was ancient. An immortal, miserable, banker. He couldn't die, because he never lived. As soon as he laughed, he lived, and passed away happy. In the world of Mary Poppins that's probably quite accurate.
+Luca Munro I felt the same way too. My dad and mom used to sing this song to me all the time when I was little, and that scene in "Saving Mr. Banks" perfectly captured how I felt as a child.
And same here, but with tears of joy, at how nice it is to see that Mr. Banks actually does want to have a good time, spending quality time with his family. Also nice to see how quickly Jane and Michael recover from their sadness, once they get downstairs and see the surprise their father has for them-he has FIXED their kite! Finally, I also like how pleased Mary Poppins looks, as she looks down at the Banks from her bedroom window, skipping off to have a good time "flying a kite,up to the highest height."
+Khadijah S Nah there are still plenty of kids who grew up with Disney take *ahem* me for example. This was my favorite movie despite it being made 36 years after I was born. c:
Not neccesarily :) I loved watching Mary Poppins when I was a kid (5, 6 years old), way before I saw Saving Mr Banks, and I am not tbat old (born in 2002)
I loved this before saving mr banks came out but now that it's out I love it more and can't seem to get this song out of my head! When I was a kid and always when I was sick this was what i would watch
+AussieAngels10 Happy tears, I'm sure. I read once that PL Travers really said that "Mary Poppins" was really about the relationship between the parents and how it hurt the family. Knowing that has made me love this scene and I tear up at the happy ending.
Nah, I was Charlie Brown in our school play and I flew kites and loved it. Remember, Charlie kept flying kites no matter how many times they ended up devoured by the kite-eating tree, and every year he'd try again to kick that football. His baseball team kept losing, but every year he was still managing it. MANAGING, mind you, not just playing. Charlie Brown was a symbol of never giving up hope, even if you're so much a failure people can see it on your face.
Now that you mention it,yes,it does seem like not many people like to fly kites anymore. People, should get back into that recreation,on any windy day,I agree.
A few years ago, after Thanksgiving lunch, my extended family and I (about 20 of us) all went out to the beach and flew kites. It was so much fun! My father adores kites, and we always wind up singing this song.
Mary Poppins was my favorite movie as a kid, and it is still one of my favorite movies today. I'm so glad that Saving Mr. Banks has allowed so many other people to fall in love with this movie as much as I did.
Same here. Every time I watch this(including just now)I like to pretend I'm saying,"A proper kite needs a proper tail saying something like,"Bless, the Irish," don't you think?"Of,course,it just so happens Ireland is one of London's neighbors,so there you go. Ha,ha! I also, like how quickly Jane and Michael recover from their crying spell here,no sooner do they get downstairs and see the surprise their dad,has for,them--he has fixed their kite, and he is finally willing to spend quality time with them!
I'm SO glad my dad took the time to take us fishing, swimming, hiking, hunting morels, making shingle arrows, and even flying kites. He went on ahead to heaven Wednesday and I can't imagine what wonderful things we may do there.
This is really interesting! I always thought he was so happy because he is as lost as mr banks.. and the last ladder to his success he needed to climb was his fathers death and because of mr banks he now thinks he is at the pinnacle of his existence... I figure this because even when he is quoting the joke back, he gets it wrong but is still giggling.. signifying that he doesn’t get why it was so funny yet he was giddy about his fathers death.
1:14 You know, at this moment, when I watched the film for the first time in a long while, I remember thinking "They don't need her anymore." And while that broke my heart, it was also very symbolic. Mary Poppins represents childhood, and fun times. When people start to grow up and enjoy themselves, she's no longer needed. For me, though, she's always been there when I need her.
I just rewatched this film again after so many years. I thought this was a good film as a kid, but now when I see it as an adult, I think it's even better. It's powerful on so many levels, character, story, music, atmosphere, and just simply emotions. It's one of those films that will stay amazing regardless of how old you are. It's the kind of film I would love to see before I pass away.
***** I think if I saw this film before I passed away, it would only make me sadder. Hopefully I die old, but on my deathbed... My parents would most likely be gone, and all those memories of childhood would deeply depress me because they're long gone.
***** My partner and i love mary poppins we always watch it at xmas even though we have it on vhs dvd, etc I remember as a kid i always felt a bit sorry for mary at the end . I always make a daft excuse to leave the room when feed the birds comes on - even as an adult that song breaks me.
Bawling right now. I've been super stressed out lately with high school and I started humming this song in class and got pretty emotional, I was about to start crying. It reminded me of my childhood and how those times were so easy, and the whole story of Mr.Banks just letting go and having fun for the first time got to me then. So I came home and played this, just for old times sake, but when it got to the chorus I just broke down crying. We are all kites 🎈
My tear ducts are wobbling Reading this msg form yourself , I understand totally, it’s like life’s stresses come to the surface and are released on the back of this film. I get emotionally involved with this, and il never heal x
When Mary Poppins is looking through the window at this family she reunited, it's both happy and sad. This is such a wonderful movie with a touching story.
People often say 'oh animated classics have such a strong emotional ending chorus, disney you made me cry la la' (speaking about disney princesses) - but hey, no one mentions HOW EMOTIONAL THIS ONE IS! Whole Mary Poppins was perfection & this climax always gives me chills!
the best thing anyone you got from Mary Poppins was the family becoming a unit, as which it should be! Family should be together. Over work. over everything!
I am a 23 Japanese girl, grown up watching Mary poppins like everyday when I was a kid. And now I'm an adult and just so happy to have this film in my childhood because surprisingly in Japan many ppl have never seen this amazing film!
Hello I know I use to watch the movie everyday I'm 16 about to be 17 damn we really are getting old huh not to be rude it just remind me of the good old days
I grew up watching Mary Poppins; I used to watch it almost once a week until about when I was 10 years old. Now, as an adult, I saw Saving Mr. Banks, and understanding everything hit me very, very hard, along with the emotions of reliving old memories. I cried on those very emotional moments. Both are wonderful works, I really love them.
Hmmmm i understand u totally. I sat watching Saving Mr Banks and found myself with tears in my eyes and I just wasn’t expecting it, I found it quite a sad film actually. All about confronting her past head on.
Yeap thats unfair . I say pity not only did they not say goodbye . But pity George did not apologize for being a jerk and did not tell her how he showed them 😊
After millions of times of watching this movie and this scene, when Mr. Dawes Junior says “Father DIED Laughing!” I laughed myself understanding what he meant.
Mary Poppins is the movie you will always enjoy forever and know that it'll be magic when you watch it especially with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke 2 classic acts
I know I'm not the only one watching this video because of "Saving Mr. Banks". I just got back from seeing it, and...even though this song was already my favorite song in the whole movie, I love it all the more because of Mrs. Travers' reactions during the two scenes. I'm never going to be able to watch this movie again without crying at this scene because of the ending to "Saving Mr. Banks".
Cant watch this without crying ..reminds me off being a little girl and my lovely dad making me a kite out off blue paper and newspaper ..he is now suffering with alzheimer's and has no memory off it but I will treasure the memories for ever ..
It appears this song makes a lot of grown adults cry and I’m thankful because I get a lump in the throat from hell at this scene and I can’t see it easing ever. Cinema from heaven 🙌🏽
FreakDaMIghet Yes, but what a legacy she left us. And not just the musical roles, like Mary Poppins or Maria Von Trappe; she had plenty of pizzazz as the voice of Shrek's Queen-Mother-In-Law and Gru's mom.
FreakDaMIghet She still can sing, just lower and not as well; however as Miss R R Johnson said, she has a legacy that she will leave us for years to come.
she's also one of the late mr disney's favorites as well. When he approached her PERSONALLY to ask her to play mary poppins, she had to tun him down because she was pregnant. WALT DISNEY said to her "its okay, I'll wait" when WALT FREAKIN DISNEY waits on you, you know there are no pants to hold your amazing iron plated balls!!
John David Tibbetts Wow. I hadn't heard that. What I had heard was that she (Julie) was being considered for My Fair Lady, since she had played Eliza Higgins on Broadway, but the director decided on Audrey Hepburn instead, which left Julie available for Mary Poppins. Apparently, when Julie won the Golden Globe for Best Actress fpr Mary Poppins, she thanked the director of My Fair Lady for NOT hiring her for the part of Eliza. (I know that's true, I've seen the clip on RU-vid.) She was definitely a gutsy lady!
I'm 30 yrs old and I love these movies!!!! Mary Poppins, The sound of music, Fiddler on the roof, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bed knobs and broom sticks, and sweet charity.
According to Dick Sherman (one of the songwriters), Walt Disney thought that "Feed the Birds" is the song that expressed the key message of the movie. Sherman says. "As soon as we wrote that song and played it for him, he said, 'Yes, that's what it's all about, isn't it boys?'" I.e., it was about Mr. and Mrs. Banks learning to feed their little birds who are hungry for their parents' love and attention. And apparently it was Walt's favorite song from the movie. I thought that was really interesting when I heard that.
I'm 13, am i the youngest here who has never seen this "saving Mr Banks" and used to watch this classic back-to-back as well as "the sound of music," "chitty chitty bang bang," "greece," "bedknobs and broomsticks" as well as every disney classic; anyone else here who used to watch these films?
Every single time watching this it gets better. Seeing a misunderstood Mr. Banks so happy and cheerful is a real tearjerker. It is obvious Mrs. Brill and Ellen giggling have not seen that side of him for a very long time him carresing Ellen's cheek. Mary Poppins saved him.
Hategplus crevis Well people make education, religion, and wealth priorities when they should focus on making life happy for themselves and others and work together to get things done but no... we live in a world with poop people who only care about themselves and their selfish desires :(
