Jinx's modified butterfly, from the show Arcane, was perfect practice for working with brass. The butterfly also lights up when you set it on the base. We learned so much from this build!

Count how many cat hairs are in this video! Actually, don't. It gets gross.

This is magnificent. Arcane was full of fascinating bits of small clockwork items like this but I never imagined someone would be crazy enough to not only try to replicate the fireflies specifically, but to succeed so thoroughly. Beautiful work.

The texture you added to the wings makes them look like the scales on an actual butterfly wing, so I think that worked out really well.

if you are worried that the double-sided tape is gumming up the cutter, I can wholeheartedly recommend to you using masking tape and superglue. One layer of masking tape put on the workpiece, one layer on the base plate of the cnc machine. Now glue the backs of the masking tape together with the superglue. It provides a secure hold strong enough for cutting wood or brass and can get easily removed with acetone.

I haven't seen Arcane, but your video was great! I'd love to see you do more items that use brass, wood, 3D printing and other things together like this. Also, thanks for the awesome "beauty shots" towards the end of the video. So many people show the process of making an item and then barely show how awesome it looks when it's done. So I appreciate you taking the time to show it off properly.

It was totally worth all the mistakes, frustration, time and learning. I've seen the work of some artists that make different kinds of little metallic creations, and this totally is at the same level. 1 hour video that I absolutely didn't see pass, especially with the cool atmosphere you 2 bring to your videos. If you're interested, pickling solution is just white vinegar and salt. Plenty of resources on measures, but pickle is WAY easier than sanding or polishing out the oxidation. You did a fantastic job and reminded me why I really want to get back into jewelry again. Haven't had my own stuff since college oh so many years ago. Next time, you should try a patina! I make jewellery as a hobby, one earing design I did I wanted a nested brass detail that acted as a hinge, looks similar to how you joined the wings to the rods. If you paint Tippex (UK) or Whiteout on the inside of the tube it will act as a resist to the solder so that the rod should rotate inside the tube once the soldering is done. That allows it to act as a hinge and the wings can be articulated if you wanted them to move or flap.

Setting Z height - you don't need the thinnest, you need a known thickness. You can then set the position of the cutter to offset that thickness Carbide Motion supports this in the Set Zero dialog. For fixturing, with thin material if you don't want to do the painters tape + super glue trick you could have run some sheet metal screws into the corners of your cut outs to fixture it too. Still, love this project. (I'll admit, I'm only just through the machining of the wings section when leaving this comment)

Some Soldering tips/info: This is great but you could use so much less solder. One of those chunks could of be all you need for one side. Solder come in "harnesses", Hard requires more heat and soft requires less. Start your components with Hard and move down the harness as you start connecting parts together. Also, you can make a Pickle with Salt and Vinegar and some warm water. :D The 'staining' is actually the copper in the brass coming to the surface from heating in that area.
