This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!
Bunjie is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps old Bunjie around 300fps.
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains.
I am in the process of upgrading Bunjie in favor a more modern crossbow. I am looking to continue to perfect my preferred hunting strategies with a new crossbow by my side. That Quest for Bunjie's Successor should be complete by summer of 2021.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

Rich, I know several guys that own the XP. Accurate? Yes, we’ll balanced? Yes, and if you have a limbproblem, etc they will stand behind they’re product. Now, when you register the bow, part of the warranty is a “free” 3 year inspection of the bow. Paid for by KI.

I have the Ripper 415 CB and it came with the original KI scope. I would not call this scope great but not terrible either. I ended up finding a KI Lumix 1.5-5x32 with speed ring and that scope is absolutely fantastic. It is however very hard to find due to demand and supply. Found mine on ebay for about $140 about 5 months ago.

Best warranty in the business. I've owned a ten point, Barnett and now the KI Furious 9.5. A friend of mine has an Excalibur and a Ravin. Over the last 5 years, all of these bows have had their issues. Killer Instinct stands behind their products without questions or investigations. You will be on hold for a while when you call but other than that, they are almost giving away strings, grips, arrow guides and stocks. I dropped my bow from 25' and the stock took the hit. KI sent a new one in 5 business days. Serving was a little frayed... BOOM. New string a few days later. The other manufactures I listed all wanted to see the bow and still charged for inspection before warrantying their products. I will say the scope needs to be upgraded.

I have a ki ripper 415, with ki speed ring scope. Very good combination IMHO. For custom arrows I really like black eagle zombie slayer 22" arrows, combined with the 150 grain 3" cut schwacker broadheads comes in at approx 465 grains, drops speed to Around 385, but tons of kinetic energy. Exit hole is incredible... 5 inch or so.... Really enjoy your videos 👍

I have the Killer Instinct Ripper 415. In my opinion, the absolute best crossbow for the money. This thing shoots consistently (accurate), one of the lightest crossbows on the market, compact, lifetime warranty and ready to go right out of the box. This is the first crossbow I've had that I will NOT be updating in the off season. Now, I do like the optics. The reticle style really works for me. But I can see where others would say needs upgraded. For me, I don't think sophisticated optics are needed for a 30 to 40 yard shot.

I bought a Killer Instinct Boss 405 crossbow as a spare crossbow. Just in case I have a problem due to something unforseen on a hunt we now have a back up. My wife and I hunt together. She has a Mission 360 and I have a Scorpyd Orion. Due to pricing being radically different between the Killer Instinct and the other 2 crossbows, it's not fair to compare them. However, the phone calls I've made to KI were returned quickly. They have been very helpful and courteous. The bow is capable of exceptional accuracy. With spine matched arrows and either QAD Exodus or Slick Trick broadheads it will group 3 arrows in less than 3" at 50 yards. I chronographed it with the supplied arrows and it does meet the claimed velocity of 405 fps. For a $300.00 crossbow I belive this is excellent accuracy and a great value. I upgraded the scope to their Lumix speed ring scope and found it to work very well and compare favorably to my Hawke speedring scopes. No, it isn't the same as shooting a crossbow that is 5 -6 times the money. While it is designed and supported by an American company, it is not manufacturered in America. All things considered it is a good value for those on a budget.

I’ve had both the Ripper 415 and just bought their new Vital X. The Vital is much easier to rope cock, plenty fast and reasonably accurate. Seems the Vital is more picky about bolts but good out to 60 yards at least.

Really enjoying your reviews. I spent about three months reviewing and comparing before purchasing my first crossbow. I had budget in mind so honestly was looking at Centerpoint, Killer Instinct and Barnett. I ended up spending a little more and bought a Wicked Ridge by TenPoint based on the advice I was getting from the few shops I had been too. They were saying their repair / return ratio was higher with the CP, KI and Barnett. Also you mentioned warranties. That was the other deciding factor of going with the Wicked Ridge. They have a five-year 100% no questions asked warranty. They either repair or replace and turn around time is within days not weeks. Great customer service.

Rich I have the swat xp and it's a fantastic crossbow, I have fired over 200 shots with it and the string and serving still look like new, the scope is of very good quality and is so accurate. I don't know much about the X1 but if its anything like the XP it will be a quality addition to your channel and the price of these crossbows is fantastic, and you get a load of features for your money, I would highly recommend KILLER INSTINCT. Good luck and the X1 is availible in the spring. Take care and all the best from Scotland

Thanks for this video. I’ve wondered what you’d think of them. I’ve got a Ripper 415 and love it. I shoot 575 grains at 365fps. It certainly Moose’s!. It packs a punch and is constantly accurate. I took two this season at 40 yards without hesitation and two others at closer range. Shots were dead on and as accurate in the field as they were at the target. I know you’re looking at accuracy and increasing your shot distance (under the proper conditions). I wouldn’t hesitate out to 50 with their products. Anything beyond that, I’m not shooting anyway whether the bow has the capability or not. I’m considering updating to the new Fatal X model this year. The scope is really good. Some people don’t like it an I get that. The reticle style isn’t for everyone. Performance wise it works, it just might not be for everyone. You can always put another Twilight (or other) on it since that’s what you’re used to 🙂 Anyway, thanks again for all you do for crossbow community. Enjoy the process and we can’t wait to see what you decide on. Until then, All haik Bunjie!

You are absolutely right about the noise reducers slowing down modern designs less. You will see a speed loss the most on older designs with the limbs out in front, especially on Excaliburs with no mechanical help and all the arrows energy originates from limb movement. When I was hunting Whitetail Deer with my Exomax I decided to take all the noise reducers off the stings because no matter what it was so noisy the deer would hear it regardless.

Something else to think about. On my ripper the cams are 14” in the cocked position. I also was looking at the cocking aid fingers when cocking it and at the point where it is fully cocked. They looked KIND of pinched in there. I have 60 shots on it and the string looks very good, no separation in the serving string.

Thank you for the review. I am amazed on how many compound crossbows have come up to the market in the last 10 years. I do worry with speeds of 470 to 500 ft./s hunters will try to make those long shots. The time laps with Bolt and Arrow compared to a bullet from a gun are different. For example the bullet will impact the deer before the deer hears the shot going off but not an arrow or a bolt. My belief is the longer the crossbow shot that is taken will translate into more wounded animals than if the shots were taken at a closer distance. Hunter in hunting condition it’s harder to duplicate the shots you can make at the shooting range. Hitting an animal in the vitals with arrow or bolt is essential to an ethical kill. A bad placement shot on an animal means the animal dies a slow death and recovery could take hours or even the next day. Love it when the animal is under 20 yards that’s what great memories are built out of. I digress
@leveraction767
@leveraction767 3 года назад
Agree 100%. Saw the same thing on the vertical side, where the compound speeds got people shooting further and wounding more. 3D probably lead to more wounding than anything else. People routinely shooting foam at 40/50 yards and taking that confidence into the field.
@donutdan1508
@donutdan1508 3 года назад
Agree 100%. Injured deer walking around with arrows sticking out of them are very bad for our sport. Gettin em in close and running an arrow through them is the only way to go.

I have the lower price lethal 405 took my first doe with it last year. very fast and very accurate shooting crossbow. I am using grim reaper broadheads. in the heat of the moment it DID hear the safety click off at about 20 yards, and I was nervous and must have aimed a tad high it hit the spine and went clean through the doe and imbedded into a fence post behind her she dropped straight to the ground. I reloaded and took another shot to ensure she would pass as quickly as possible. and within about 2 minutes from first shot she was gone. I was happy with the experience. love your videos. The other problem with the safety so far back, is that if you have to make that large a movement to turn off the safety, many prey animals have keen sight for movement, and that is a much more obvious movement then a slight bend of the thumb

Killer Instinct - manufactured in Taiwan. One positive note - most KI models would be cheaper than what you paid for Bunjie over 10 years ago. Second positive note - one of the few cheaper crossbow companies that offer a lifetime warranty. Ravin (& CenterPoint) don't offer that! I suggest borkholderarchery.com when shopping for crossbows. Most new models are shown in one youtube clip, & then they do a range clip with the crossbow (shooting them 60 yards with factory &/or their custom bolts). When I watch someone cock a KI Speed 425 on youtube, the crossbow does a horrible creaking sound. If I was going to buy a more affordable crossbow, Killer Instinct would be the most logical choice. Killer Instinct may be the best value in crossbows. Nice specs for the price!

Killer instinct shows their quivers with three arrows because the kit comes with three arrows. The quiver holds five arrows. Hint: A closed end pvc toilet flange and either 3" or 4" pvc pipe cut to length makes a quick and cheep floor/ground practice quiver. The 4" holds about 25 arrows and the 3" holds less. I made three with a 10' piece of pipe and three flanges. Two bow quivers and a crossbow quiver.

Nicely done video analysis, but you always do a great job! This was one I'd hoped you wouldn't put on your list! A friend bought one a couple of years ago, their top of the line at the time for more than they're selling this model and he's had many problems with this bow. In fact it's been returned to the factory on several occasions for repairs. When he last got it back, he shot around 30 arrows before it malfunctioned again! There customer service may well be the worst in the industry! But hey, the arrow shaft or barrel is pretty cool and the new 405 FPS model is flying off the shelves for just under $400!

Rich, Thank you very much for this series on the journey to find a new crossbow. I have recently undergone one myself. As I attempted to watch you with the brand killer Instinct, .... Hate , Hate , can’t stand. My opinion has calmed since opening day of New York crossbow season. I, like you, research almost every purchase that I make. But, last year I read many, many fantastic reviews on Killer Instinct bows. Leading me to purchase the Burner 415. I bought the COOL Killer Instinct case. DON”T BUY THIS BRAND!!!!!!!!! I shot my bow in Florida in my back yard and at friends in preparation for the hunts at two of my friends homes in New York. Those locations were in Castile, New York and in Dunkirk, New York. Short version is...... first day of the crossbow season in New York, I saw no deer. Got down from the tree. The Burner 415 would not, could not shoot the decocking arrow. The bow trigger would not release the arrow. My friends and myself could not get the bow to release the string. I could not hunt on day two. I drove to Buffalo and would have bought another crossbow, if I could have found an option at Cabbalas or Sportsman’s stores in Buffalo. Did I mention that it was the FIRST WEEKEND of deer sear in NEW YORK and I drove from Sarasota Florida to hunt deer with my friends in New York. BIG DEER THEY SAID...... AWESOME TIME THEY SAID...... Broken crossbow....... No LEGAL crossbows in stock since it was first weekend. I bought a Bear Compound and finished the season without taking a deer. On the drive home I endured 47 minutes on hold with Killer Instinct........... I actually fell asleep in the Pennsylvania welcome rest stop..... Kendra from Killer Instinct, came to the phone at the 47 minute mark and woke me up. To be fair She is great. She promised to replace / fix my BURNER 415 and make it right..... When I reached Florida, I had my friends at COOKS SPORTLAND in Venice, FLA.... EXCELLENT PEOPLE!!!! Eric Cook helped me with the parts list that Kendra asked for of parts that would be needed to make the bow whole again. We supplied KI that list in week three of deer season..... I received the parts the first week of FEBRUARY!!!!!!! WTF. Sorry, I now own a Mission Sub-1 I protect it with the SKB case. 385 FPS, accuracy and smooth action.. I love your work, Kenny Garcia Ken.garcia713@yahoo.com

I wonder what the reasoning os for putting the safety so far from the trigger ? And it seems like it is in a very bad place too.
@one-eyedarcher
@one-eyedarcher 3 года назад
Reason for the safety being so far back is because the string latch is back there. String cocks all the way back to the butt to allow a greater powerstroke. Take some getting used to but once you do not bad at all.

The picture shown in the ad for the swat for the scope are actual,, The middle or top triangle is your 20 I don't particularly care about them not being numbered at 20,, 30,, 40,, 50,, 60,, I only use the top 3 being the 20,, 30 and 40,, I adamantly refuse to take a shot on anything I am hunting past 40 yd,, The accuracy of this scope is fantastic And also allowing adjustments for zoom and/or speed rating,, Personally I maxed my speed rating to the highest setting to bring my target as close as possible through my scope and then sited my scope,,, I haven't changed it and my shots Pin point accurate,, And of course being 52 like you stated in your video (50),, our eyes are not that great any longer so bringing my target closer to me works perfectly

K.I. has had a lot of limb issues with the 415 but I haven't seen those issues with the other K.I. models last year and I make it a point to look for such things, with all bows out there. K.I. isn't close to the limb failures seen at Excalibur over the last 2 years. Not even close and excal isn't one model having issues, it's all but one, in the micro series. Just saying.

Had a killer instinct, ripper 415. Bought it January of last year, sold it in August. They had/have a major design flaw in one of their cranks to where the pin backed out and nearly broke my finger when the locking pawl let go as soon as it took the full draw weight (200 lbs). It grabbed at first, which is why I let go of the handle. The pin had no physical way of locking it into the assembly, such as an e-clip. Their response was, "I'm sorry to hear that". They offered no refund for their flawed design, ofnwhich I was able to fix. On top of that, it was loud. Like louder than a .22lr. The string dampers, did little to nothing. I even added extra sound deadening to try to quiet it down. The amount of creaking and groaning coming from the limbs during the draw cycle was absolutely disturbing. Neat bows, good price point, but I haven't been impressed with them or their customer service. It's worth noting that these bows are manufactured in China, then assembled in the US. If you look closely at some of their other bows then compare to Centerpoint and some of the other budget bows, you'll see distinct similarities in the stocks, barrels and even cams and crank assemblies. After my experience, I can notnrecm them as a primary bow. Maybe if you got one for a backup, but even still there's better made, USA made, budget bows from wicked ridge.
