One thing I want to mention regarding the level of detail that's put into the stages is that Sumo Digital actually showed the original Skies of Arcadia producer the racetrack and she was actually moved to tears from the amount of effort and detail put into the background elements and such
Fun Fact: Sumo Digital also worked on OutRun; another series of racing games by SEGA, which explains why the Sonic racing games are so good. And speaking of which, the DLC course for this game is based on OutRun. I too, am also hoping that Sumo Digital is returning for the new Sonic racing game.
7:53 can we consider this the canon reason as to why Knuckles doesn't guard the master emerald anymore? He just always carries it around with him instead of leaving it at Angel Island. Oh whatever, I consider this canon now.
But how does Angel Island stay afloat if Knuckles always has it on his person? One of the main reasons he protects the Emerald is to keep the island airborne, so carrying it around with him would go against his sacred duty, would it not?
Chaos Gengar from what I've seen not counting Sonic 3 and Knuckles the only time when Angel island falls is when the master emerald breaks into multiple pieces and yeah I agree that keeping something that powerful on your person is going against how his ancestors protected the emerald.
Chaos Gengar I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. The only reason why the island floats is to protect the master emerald. If the emerald is not on the island, then the island is just a bunch of ancient ruins, nothing more.
5:21 I know, right? It's not fair that the only RU-vidr (AFAIK) who's played every Sonic game ever, is completely ignored. But Arin Hanson, the biggest Sonic hater on the internet? Yeah, let's put him in the credits of Mania!
Sonic fans being credited, I get...but one of the most anti-Sonic critics on the net? Why not credit the IGN critic who reviewed Sonic Unleashed while you're at it...
I think they should revisit the Sonic R formula where every character who can run at super sonic speeds runs/flys/glides/jumps etc. Just give the game the good controls and it'll work.
Both Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed are fantastic Sonic racing games. I also love the fact that Richard Jacques remixed his own tunes for this game!
Good boy Clement. You got this done, now go to that wedding and pick up a down on her luck bridesmaid. When you get back, get on with Sonic and Mega Man in Super Smash Bros on the Wii U! Priorities after all...
You think there'll be controversy? The most controversial thing I can imagine happening is the reaction to Clement saying he doesn't think the games are that bad... on the other hand, Clement would have to care that the fans disagree with his opinions
The next game will be Mario and Sonic At The Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. And The first two Boom games came out before SMBU, so he should play those games first IMHO.
Really... I was not aware of that. As far as I know, he's playing the 3 Boom games together, as opposed to splitting them up. I think I remember him announcing that order last year when he was announcing his annual summer break
Fun fact 2: Pudding and B.D. Joe are the only two characters in this game that use vehicles that originate from their main game series (go-kart versions, but to look like their originals)!
Actually the car that AGES is driving is called the Hornet. "Gallop" is the name of the in-game brand for Daytona. The plane is also called the F14 Tomcat
Transformed is my favourite racing game of all time; I think it has the single greatest gimmick of any racing game I've played next to Double Dash. Honestly, Burning Depths is my favourite stage to play on, and like some other tracks, I like how they basically tell a story during the race. My main issue with Transformed honestly, is that I think the game is a bit unstable. You mentioned hitting walls and the like when it really shouldn't have happened, but I've done other things such as falling out of bounds and falling for a long time.
Damn this makes me want to go back and play the All Star Racing games again, and it makes me more pumped for the new racing game they've teased a few months ago. Hopefully they'll reveal the new Sonic racing game before E3 which could be any week now.
If everything is unlocked when you buy the game, there really wouldn’t be a incentive to play the missions and trying to get get stars outside of “the sake of collecting”. I think having the unlockables really adds to the longevity of the game, even if it seems artificial. Perhaps having a code to unlock most characters as a happy medium?
Got this when it was release back in 2012. I’ve actually didn’t even follow this game or even knew it was coming. Played it, was amazed how great it was. Lots of hours.
To this day, I still couldn't unlock AGES in the PC version of this game. I barely have enough coins to unlock them, and the challenge missions were too tough for me.
Kinda funny how you missed it as you did one too many games. Minor slip-up, but still. Reminds me of a Sonic Boom scene where Sonic keeps waking up and then something interesting happens with him saying: "Oops, one too many."
if anyone is at all on the fence about whether or not they should buy this game, get off that damn fence and check it out! Especially if you liked Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, because this game is at least twice as good as that game!
Oh great Clement i just wanted to let you know how mutch i enjoyed your content over the years you got me over many many borring moment when i was on break or just playing stuff . keep up the good Work Bro.
I LOVE this game, it's my favourite Sonic Racing game to date and I always go back to it whenever I'm down to play and there's so a lot of things I like about it, in fact it reminds me of Split/Second Velocity where the entire tracks involves environmental damage you can cause as well as open new routes which got me a lot of vibes when playing it, the water effects is still gorgeous still the best looking water we see to date even on last Gen consoles it looks good, I love they introduce a drift boost mechanic when you get a boost you switch drift direction and that boost will stay when coming across a section of twisting turns making it so you have a big charge when you come to an end of it and I'm glad this was better than the Original All Stars Racing cause drift spamming for level 1 boost is just way overpowered especially since only 1/6 of the roster there can exploit it, I will agree there is flaws besides the Golden Axe track you mentioned the NiGHTS track (the last lap when you about to turn into a boat the game glitches itself and turns for you making it unaware for you to know if that's gonna happen. One thing that I sure everyone will remember that does affect console players is the character ballet, we get to vote who we want as DLC and whoever got the most votes will likely be added and there's a lot that are very close with Vectorman, Bonazo Bros, Bayonetta, Hatsune Miku, etc. but only 1 won got added and that's Ryo but the downside to that is he was added PC only along with other PC exclusive characters before he was added so console players ultimately got screwed and we only get Metal Sonic as Pre-Order and Alex Kidd as 25th December update, it's a sad day for Console players but we all put up with it so we just accept the game as it is since the roster is already big as it is.
Clement talking about the Skies of Arcadia stage changing from being destroyed by the airships made me think of the game Split Second. That was a fun game too
Hey there, Clement. If no one's pointed it out to you already, you can land safely on tracks similar to the one at 15:47 if you hold forward on the left stick before you land.
I think one of the best things this game has to offer is the overhaul presentation of the game, each track looks amazing in their own way. And don't get me started on the music, because this game has one of the best soundtracks in the entire franchise. I'm still jamming to the soundtrack here and there, remixes like Carrier Zone, Graveyard Gig and Race of Ages are just fantastic, possibly some of the best remixes to classic SEGA songs.
I agree, Clement. Other characters in racing games shouldn't be that hard to unlock. Especially when there are so many. But yeah, it is a great game. And as always, great video.
I was dismissive when I first played this for some reason but then mates started all playing and I had so much fun. It's up there as one of my favourite kart racers. I'm personally not big on the roster as I feel some characters are missing and I'm not too attached to most of the characters that made it but that's really my only complaint.
Internet: "Sonic ASRT is just a Mario Kart 7 ripoff!" Me: "You mean aside from the fact that ASRT had a much longer development that started before Mario Kart 7 was even conceived... and ASRT actually requires skill?"
The single player campaign is not just for single player, if you have a friend (or at least 3 local friends), you'll be able to work together with them to get a better shot at getting a greater score. Granted it'll be too easy though because of this, but if one of your friends fail, you or somebody else has to put on their game-faces.
Good video friend. I got Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed for the Xbox 360. I used to have it on PS3, but I decided to give the PS3 version of Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed to my cousin since I like the 360 version instead. However, the game keeps freezing on me every time.
I still put this as my favourite kart racer, mainly due to how challenging it is and you do feel rewarded if you master it. I finally unlocked AGES recently after a lot of A rank missions and a few S rank ones, probably my new favourite out of the racers. Oh, and fuck the Burning Rangers track.
I was shocked as how HARD this game for later on. I couldn't get all the stars and get the final mod for AGES. Doing those Traffic Attack missions on Expert wasn't happening.
It helps when at that point, the developers at Sumo Digital weren't just ex-Gremlin staff (Top Gear, Lotus) that worked on the home ports of OutRun 2, but they also recruited ex-staffers from Bizarre Creations (developers of Metropolis Street Racer, Project Gotham Racing, Blur) and Black Rock Studio (developers of Pure and Split/Second); the effort greatly paid off with Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. The way of unlocking characters should've been handled better however. That said, Transformed is one hell of an arcade racer with a fantastic Richard Jacques soundtrack, and a love letter to Sega's history. A shame they removed the other playable Sega characters from the previous game, although Ryo Hazuki did return only in the PC version of the sequel.
One thing worth mentioning is that this is literally the only Sonic game to be released on Vita (not counting PSP compatibility). I got the Platinum, and it was hard (but fun) as fuck to get, especially the 100% trophy since that requires beating the Expert ghosts.
15:47 Holy S***! This happens with me all the time. At first I thought my copy or my save was broken, since this only started to happen after I played this level for several times plus the fact that every single let's play I have watched didnt have this "roof crashing", but apparently its from the game itself. Only happens with the hardest difficult maybe? By the way, about the unlockable characters, I agree with you. The best way to solve this is: having the character unlockable in singleplayer, and in multiplayer you can choose every single character but you will only gain experience points for those characters you have unlocked first only.
I get why you find it annoying that so many characters are locked, and that some are hard to unlock. But I dunno, I may just be an odd ball, but ever since ancient times I have always loved having to unlock fighters, it made them seem more special. Like, you play as the same 10 characters for a long time, and then when you finally unlock someone new, you are so excited to play as that new guy, plus you immediately think "I had to unlock this guy, he must be super strong". I play video games to unlock shit, so if a racing game has everything unlocked from the start, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I have no reason at all to play it when I'm not with my friends. I mean racing the AI with no meaningful reward at the end is only fun for so long. Also, what I love even more is characters that are hard to unlock, or even secret. Characters who don't have a slot on the selection roster UNTIL you unlock them, making you believe you have everything, and then when you hear from friends that there is this even more super rare hidden character, you want to go back in and see if you can unlock them. To me, racing games are like any other game, it is not fun if everything is available from the start.
I think there should always be unlockables in these games, but if it's the roster then I feel that most of the roster should be unlocked. Good example of this is Street Fighter Alpha 3, where 97% of the roster is already there from the get go, only missing Guile, Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma (if you want to count him). Or even like Sonic Riders where you unlocked most of the racers by playing the story mode (which most players would probably end up doing anyway I feel). Either way it makes it to where you can pick up the game with more from the start without having to unlock a ton of things first. Party, Fighting and Racing games I feel should have a decent amount unlocked for the people who want to just pick up a game to play with their friends and family, while having more to unlock for those who want to go the extra mile.
Bojak51 - You know, I can agree with this. I like having alot of stuff to unlock, but I also dont mind it just being a few characters. A couple weeks ago I played Tekken 3 with some random dude at a cafe, and we only had half the roster to work with which quickly got a bit boring. He then tried to look up the cheat for unlocking everything, but didn’t find it.
I've always loved unlockables in any game genre, probably because I'm used to playing games by myself. I can understand fewer unlockables in games that are more multi-player oriented (like racing games), but I need unlockables to get any sort of mileage out of playing something less story-driven. Otherwise, I feel like there's no point.
I plan on getting the 360 version of this game sometime soon. It looks alot fun as the first game, though it is gonna be a pain in the butt unlocking some of the characters.
Danica Patrick rear-ended Sonic the Hedgehog? That's not surprising. 😉 I've been meaning to try this game out. I often hear that it's way better than Mario Kart 8.
My biggest issue isn't even the unlocking but rather how incredibly difficult it is to unlock them all. Which not only got me ticked at the game by the time I got to getting AGES but also meant I was head and shoulders better than all my friends since I did all the hard stuff and it led to lopsided races where they stood no chance.
I honestly hope that the Switch eventually gets a port of this game, but with extra content already in the game. Maybe they could make the game on the switch with all of the cut characters returning in the new game like Billy Hatcher. Or maybe some series getting more representatives like Baby and Gongon from Monkey Ball or even Silver or Rogue from Sonic. Maybe some new series could join the race like Joker, and when he gets Allstar, Arsene could appear and fly behind the car. Possibly Bayonetta could get in and her Allstar being a series of punches from Madama Butterfly surrounding the car from all angles. I feel like the biggest challenge in all previous characters being in a new game would be getting Danica Patrick approved to be in the game or Wreck it Ralph or possibly the addition of Vanellope from the movie being put in. The only thing that I hope they'd do with a new game is making sure every character in the game has a stage. Billy Hatcher wasn't in the Wii U game but his stage made it in, Meanwhile Ulala and Pudding made it in, but had no stage at all. This game is honestly one of the funnest racing games I have played, alongside Mario Kart. This game is really fun to play alone or with friends because it has so many unique mechanics that go together so well. It has fast pace with items that aren't overpowered and constantly cause you to start from 0 mph. The formula of the game and physics are pretty good and also implemented well. I honestly just hope this series continues to grow.
I'm pretty sure Ralph asking that question is a reference to the times critics, LPers and fans ask that same question whenever they play the Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing games or look at the Sonic level pack in Lego Dimensions because one of the vehicles you unlock in the level is the Sonic Speedster (Which is the name of Sonic's car from the Sega racing games). There's a lot of references and gaming jokes in the movie that gamers can easily get. One thing I noticed is why were you playing a song that can be heard in The Lego Movie Video Game and Lego Dimensions in this video?
I never get tired of All Stars Racing Transformed! Many said that it’s pathetic in comparison to the first All Stars Racing, but I don’t think so. I mean, there are more options and it’s super darn fun!
It would be interesting if the boats created waves (especially on collision with the water) that other vehicles could jump off to get boosts. I haven't noticed it being as such in my time playing this game, but if that were in the sequel I think it would better justify the existence of boats as their own racing style rather than essentially just cars on a different type of road that occasionally suck at ascending ramps.
Ralph: Hey Sonic, what are you doing in a car? Clement: Because those are the fucking rules Ralph! How is he suppose to fly in the sky without a vehicle? Sonic: Even without wings, I can still fly! Clement: Shut up, Sonic!
If I remember right, certain versions of the game got patched to remove that obstacle. I know the WiiU version was patched, and I imagine the PC version was too.
