It's a GBA fighting game starring your favourite blue hedgehog. And they sure love to beat the shit out of each other. And remember when I said back in Sonic Adventure that Chaos was going to return? This is that game.
Black&Blue Yeah...it would probably have been a lot easier if you were Super Sonic. But it does make sense in terms of story since Emerl's got the power of a giant laser cannon and the seven chaos emeralds inside of him...and Sonic beat him anyway.
JJ Slider That stage MY GOD THAT STAGE!!!!!!!!!! Especially if your Trying to get a S rank OMG thats even harder most brutal level and my most hated level In video game history.but you knows what worse someone said on a website is that if I got a S rank on the end of the world it said you will unlock a extra story in sonic 06 guess what that was just a lie and it was just a xbox/ps3 achievement and the game gave me nothing.thats hours of playtime WASTED.
This game has the greatest story in any Sonic Game I've ever seen. I particularly love the last two chapters and Gerald's Diary where everything just comes full circle. I won't say the ending incase anyone doesn't know it but I was crying during it. And god damn was it powerful.
@@Sharpteeth32 By Sonic standards, none of them might not be that bad, but *none* of them, not even Sonic Battle are particular well-written. Again, story was never a strong suit for the series, anyway.
SEGA has an odd habit, although I can't place my finger on it. They have this weird obsession with making Cream the most broken fucker in the GBA games. Her attacks are solid, they have great range, but her HEAL. Oh my god, her heal is literally the best in the game. So yeah, still broken as fuck.
+Jordan S Bullshit. Cream was damn near essential because she was essentially the White Mage. The stupid Pow minigames would fail *INSTANTLY* if you messed up even once with her, making you *WASTE* that round completely. Oh wait, technically you're wasting *TWO* rounds sense you have to spend the next round getting her Pow points back while your characters are getting their asses handed to them.
+Ender41948 Her attacks suck, it is weak, slow. Range doesnt help much on 1on1, in team she is annoying but again it is weak. Shield has much range as well, her range advantage looks pale bc of that. What makes her stand up against Shadow, are her special attacks and heal. Her power sp. is fast, strong, fly the opponent around allow her to combo another power sp. Her shot sp. is ok-ish but it is fast, easy to use, versatile. If that's not broken enough, her bomb is very strong as well. BUT, thats all about it, block her power sp., she is pretty much nothing. Bomb can be dodged, shot is weak. Again, her normal attacks suck, weak. Aim attack, weak. She can jump fast, charge fast, heal fast. Her air attack, very strong but cant rely much on that. Adding all together she is still at far cry from Shadow, which is strong at every aspect(except heal) and she is nothing more than Sonic. Broken as fuck? You are just hyping things up.
I remember playing through this as a kid without improving emerl's skills because I skipped the dialogue that explained how to do it. Longest 3 weeks of my life.
I think this game really deserves to have an enhanced remake on home consoles with all of the things you listed in order to improve it. A Power Stone-esque Sonic fighting game has a lot of potential, but the execution wasn't very stellar.
At long last I made it to the last video of the first playlist of the sonic retrospective. It's been a long ride just getting to this vid and now I gotta binge watch the other 2 playlists. I've watched these videos when they first came out but now I've chosen to watch them again in pretty much one sitting. I'll keep up with updates as I go along from this point forward.
In the fan game "Ultimate Flash Sonic", I always wondered where the Shadow sprites came from, because Shadow wasn't in the Sonic Advance trilogy. Now I know the sprites came from this game.
As a kid, I broke the R button on my DS Lite playing that Knuckles fight and never played it again. It's nice to know that I wasn't just garbage at the game, lol.
i loved playing as shadow in this game. if he were to somehow someway make it into smash, i can totally see them using this as a blueprint for his fighting style. the purple orbs would be his smash attacks, the dome like move would be his down special, his neutral combo, etc.
Clement sucks at this game. He kept using special attacks that the opponent was clearly set to guard. This game is much easier when you actually know how to play it properly.
problem: did you know whan you played knuckles at the time? and especially, how many times did you replay this stage? no, really, I beated the game a while ago, and I still remember the at least 10 times that I tried this stage. there are some difficulty spikes in the game that are just unfair to the player.
Thunder the Bright Yes I did. That's at the halfway part of the story, so most people should have a basic understanding of how the game works at that point. I know that particular mission can be hard the first time through, but it's easier if you know how to play the game right.
Thunder the Bright So I'm not the only one who experienced that spike. Like the first one against Knuckles in Sonic's Story. WTF!? I didn't have that great of battle cards back then!! Or enough points! And he had this OHKO move on Emerl that really pissed me off. I'd be in the middle of a combo and he pulls his Power move out of his ass and kills me! Not to mention that he blocked nearly all my attacks!
Lastly Shadow kept going on about something "bad" that he wanted to stop from rehappening, not going with Shadow The Hedgehog could Emerl had been the reason GUN shut down the ARK?
cody2819 Remember the fact that "The research projects were too dangerous"? well, Emerl destroying an entire section of the Ark after feeding him with just one chaos emerald as the staff had to unload all their weapons to shut him down before getting shipped to an obscure place gave the perfect excuse to shoot down the ARK project.
Well, here's info I found about Emerl on the Sonic News Network page. So, it seems that Gerald Robotnik decided to reprogram the robot as Project: Gizoid. He started off by giving the robot a 'heart', which what I mean is give it actual emotions like he was doing with Shadow. But this project was never finish and he gave the robot to the government so that he can spend more time working on Project Shadow. However, the robot was absolving a large amount of weapons and decimated a large section of the ARK. Because that Gerald's research was becoming too dangerous to continue, they had to shut down the robot. Now, with this new info, let me try to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Now, there's one more thing I wanted to add to this, but I'll save that for another time, but here's my theory on this which is Professor Gerald Robotnik had discovered the Gizoid and then he discovered that it can learn abilities from other people and get stronger using the Chaos Emeralds. He start off this project called Project: Gizoid and started off by trying to give it a 'heart' like he was with another project called Project: Shadow. But then he was visited by Black Doom who needed his help in finding the Chaos Emeralds. Then Gerald needed his help in finding blood for his Project: Shadow. So, he made a secret deal with Black Doom to help him finish Project Shadow. So, not telling the government about the deal he made with the alien, he handed the robot to them to keep an eye on so that he can finish Project: Shadow with Black Doom, which he did. But then the Gizoid was absorbing many weapons and destroyed a section on the ARK. So, they went up to the ARK to talk about what the robot was doing and realised that he was getting help from an evil alien to create Project: Shadow. He basically left a dangerous robot in the government's hands so that he can work with an alien to create the Project: Shadow. Through the eyes of the government, he was becoming a dangerous man who was working on a dangerous forren robot and has now betrayed humanity by leaving the dangerous robot in their hands so that he can work for an evil alien to finish Project: Shadow, who at some point will work for the aliens. They had no choice but to shut down all of his projects and shut down the ARK too. Gerald realized that getting help from Black Doom was a terrible mistake, and he created the Eclipse Canon in the hopes that the Comet can be destroyed, who are planning to comeback 50 years later. His granddaughter, Maria had sent Shadow to Earth, but was found and imprisoned while Maria was killed. Gerald was shocked by this and never thought that they would be THIS ruthless to him. So much so that he tried to get his revenge on the government, but was captured and executed, while finally having the ARK shut down. So, what do you think?
I totally agreed with you that level when you play as knuckles fighting against these robots was a pain in the ass and it took me like.........above 5 hours to pass it. When my friends mention about the game last time and he wanted to figure out is the game good? Me? I told him it was a piece of crap. It's like this pretty much dragging you the hell and you gone be on that part for hours to find a perfect strategy. I'm just glad that game is gone because I keep tearing my damn shirt over that part but at the end I finally beat it.
I did enjoy Sonic Battle's storyline for being well-written, and I also enjoyed Emerl's concept. Having a custom character that you can upgrade is always a plus. If the balancing issued were fixed, the game would have been much better
Totally spot on. Here's a handful of things that annoyed me about the game. Some (a lot, actually) are the same as the video, some are original. In any case, just my opinion, and others may disagree with me and that's just fine. 1. Like the video, that god-awful 3v1 battle with the Guard Robos. Pretty much the same thing as finding a bar of soap on a prison bathroom floor. BEND OVER, BABY. I actually like Chaos Gamma/Guard Robos, they're my favorite character to play as. Annoying as all hell in a 3v1 fight, and still a minor annoyance even just fighting one or two, but nevertheless a very rewarding character to master. One you learn how to time your painfully slow attacks carefully, you're EXTREMELY powerful and you don't even have to directly hit the enemy to damage them, as seen in the video. That's also one of many reasons that 3v1 battle is total horse crap, Knuckles has to be DEAD ON, whereas the Guard Robos don't even have to aim within a freaking mile of you. So, so many things are wrong with that fight, and I feel for you for having to sit through that. I know that feeling, been playing this game for like 13 years now and STILL that fight takes me multiple tries every single time. 2. Enemies spamming block every time you try to hit them. Okay, this is why I always set the difficulty on custom battles to Super Weak. Anything higher than that and it turns into them cheaply spamming block every goddamn time you try to hit them, and then they land a cheap hit on you afterward. There's a difference between a challenge and just being plain cheap, and I seldom play higher difficulties because of this. Though, I do sometimes play Super Powerful as Chaos Gamma just to test my skill, and even then the ONLY time I ever die is if I'm getting gang-raped by multiple enemies at once, they use the super-Ichikara special thing on me and kill me in one it, or if I'm facing my custom Emerl. JESUS CHRIST he is OP. He's got all the fastest and most powerful moves in the game, much of them from either Shadow or Amy (I like a combination of speed and power alike), some even being Ultimate moves, and his Attack and Strength Support are both at the highest level and he's got Knuckle's ability to charge his Ichikara super fast. Oh also he explodes when he dies. 3. AIs always target you. Doesn't matter if you've got team mates or not, the enemies always aggro on you. Like...what the f-... 4. STORY IS NOTHING BUT BATTLE AFTER BATTLE AFTER BATTLE AFTER BATTLE AFTER BATTLE. Russian Roulette with five bullets and one empty chamber is more fun than this. 5. Performing a Heavy Attack on Shadow only for him to magically teleport and use his Pursuit Attack on you in mid-air. Finishing combos is always a gamble against him, because he ALWAYS gets to use his Pursuit Attack. Word of advice, when you do a combo and use a Heavy Attack on him, do NOT finish the combo and attempt to use your Pursuit Attack on him, less the tables be turned on you. 6. The final battle of Rouge's story. Oh my god that's annoying. Not as bad as the 3v1 with the Guard Robos, but close. 7. Doctor Eggman and his infinite heat-seeking explosives. Also the fact he explodes every time you kill him, which you have to be up close to kill him unless you use a long range Special Attack, resulting in you dying every time you kill him. 8. More of a minor complaint, but who the hell is that green E-100 series robot (likely a special Guard Robo, like Chaos Gamma) seen partially assembled in the Gimme Shelter? It's never explained and it's confused me for years now. 9. 500 Skill Point limit. Basically, there's no way you can have all Ultimate cards equipped at once because it would exceed the limit you're given. 10. All the minigames except for one are unplayable without friends. Who the F- is seriously going to play SONIC BATTLE with me? Oh wait, nobody. I always wanted to try these minigames with somone, or at least kick someone's ASS with Chaos Gamma, but no...nobody seriously plays this game. With good reason, but still. Believe me, I could go on and on for AGES, but I'll stop here. I've made my point, and the video pretty much sums up the game in a nutshell anyway.
2 isn't really a criticism because it's wrong, the CPU isn't spamming block, they're reacting to your attack, which you can do to them as well, I usually don't want to go against CPU's that just lets you hit them. The only problem with the highest difficulty is that they only target you in team battles, instead of the other cpu assisting you.
You should showcase how Emerl works and the Skill Cards as well. Emerl (though only in the story mode) can copy the techniques and attacks that it's adversary is using against it. You can pull together some really awesome combos and make Emerl so overpowered that he's unstoppable! Mix Shadow basic combo, Rouge's heavy "Charlie Kick", Knuckles's Aim Attack, Shadow's special "Chaos Snap", Amy's "G. Tornado, and Sonic's bomb, and I swear to god that if you set up the right defending, running, dash, jump, air action and stance technique, Emerl cannot be stopped!!!
Did I just witness a nostalgia hit of Mine Sweeper? LMAO. I knew there was a reason why I stopped playing this game. Can't wait to see your Sonic Advance 3 Play through. :)
The funniest part about the video is watching Clement being very analytical, and the sound is like a chainsaw in background. I know that’s the game because of gba sound limitations but it’s so funny, it sounds like the game is revving a chainsaw.
I am so glad you took a look at this game rather than playing it and although I have a soft spot for this game your criticizing of it was VERY fair in terms of some of the story difficulty spikes. But thats ONLY because some game designer thought, "Oh well people are gonna blaze through this if we dont make a few hard fights and then they wont grind and blah blah blah let's crank the difficulty of a few fights to Hard mode". It's annoying as hell to deal with if you have a bad Emerl built up
Well, I like a little challenge, so I love Sonic Battle. And thank you for not calling me an idiot or something like that. Really is wonderful seeing someone speak their opinion without being a douche. :D
I actually really freakin loved this game. Especially with the extra codes that nintendo power provided. Each code was an ultimate attack from each style for Emerl. Though there were times where I just kinda looked at the game and went 'DAFUQ?!'
Hah, minesweeper. I'd clean up at that minigame. I find it funny that you use Chao to mark the mines. You just put a stake in the ground next to the mine, put a leash on a Chao, tie it to the stake and hope the Chao doesn't get too curious.
I would love a better and sequel of Sonic Battle... A Sonic Battle 2... or Sonic 3D Battle Imagine playing this game on the 3ds or on a console, maan... that would be awesome...
Just got through beating the 3 guard robot mission... took me 8 tries I kid you not. For some reason they fought me individually which is why I was able to beat it. I recommend running/gliding away from the robots and using Knuckles' dig attack. It's also nice that he recovers really fast.
I remember really liking the game when I was younger(like 5 or so). Hell, I even used it to teach myself how to read. Nowadays, I don't really see myself playing it that much, if at all.
Ahh.... Sonic Battle. I loved and hated this game as a kid. It was super tough for me back then, and then years later( I shit you not) I realized Emerl could equip better moves than his starting moves. It was an epiphany; beating the game was hell not knowing that (didn't read much instructions back then) and I still can't beat it that way now for some reason.
I empathize. Back in when I first played through Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories I didn't realize you could change out cards. Yeah, seriously. I don't even remember how I figured it out exactly, I think it was just through messing around in the menus. But trust me, you are definitely not alone in those types of blunders.
I really enjoyed this game, loved the music & the overall 90's graffiti art feel to it I found that knuckles mission difficult but I felt as thought it was fair as in any mistake I made was my fault as the game trains you up to defeat these robots so 3 of them is even more of a challenge the key was to block a death explosion which fills your special gauge half way then you can 1 hit them, also that attack from gamma that does over half of your health leaves gamma with only 1HP so it isnt broken
I absolutely loved this game. I was a kid, and as a kid I couldn't finish Sonic Adventure 2. But I finished this game, so when I saw Emerl die, I ended up leaving this game alone for a while. It's not that great, I know, but I loved it.
I agree with your opinion on story mode, but other than that I LOVE THIS GAME. I want sonic battle 2 so bad. then they could improve, and we could have more characters like silver and blaze and others
I played this game, beat it, and thought it was kinda neat, like some of the music in it too though it's a bit weird. However, it's not that great of a fighting game, and if I remember correctly, there's a bit of grind you have to do at some point too. The concept is great and it's really not all that hard to fight once you know how some things work but that doesn't really make it anything over average.
Remember the Rouge training session? You have to go 3 minutes without getting hit by Rouge, and then without changing your skills, beat a Guard Robo 3 times without getting knocked out once, if I remember correctly. Being unable to do this, I quit the game.
Hey clement on that mission with knuckles all you have to do is pick his second special move the super punch just run around wait for them to come to you and just spam that attack its really easy.
I know this game was hard, but the I thought the story was well written. Some of the fights are repetitive but I LOVED the concept of Emerl. He was basically a custom Sonic character. True you had to work to unlock colors, attacked, etc. but nonetheless I loved the idea of Emerl. Overall I found this fun (except for the guard robot fights like you said) and probably my favorite portable beat-em-up game.
My favorite GBA fighter. Though that's not saying much because there wasn't many GOOD fighters on the GBA to begin with. I honestly don't blame you for not playing the single player. Knuckles part: I spammed his smash move and won. It's ridiculously tough though, so I completely understand the frustration. I got stuck at the "Sonic/Shadow vs Emerl" fight. Uuuugggghhh... Took me so many tries because they both have a huge handicap.
I like sonic battle but the only thing I dislike is that you can't choose who you want plays as in the story. Also it takes forever to complete the story mode. But my favourite part is we you can battle computers and other players. This game was the first I played on a gameboy.
Clement, you actually can play it on the big screen. With a controller. (either the GBA itself or that of the GameCube). The Game Boy Player lets you do that. But that multiplayer even harder to deal with.
I remember that there’s a quest that involves emerl fighting rouge in which you can’t get hit at all and beat here I think 3-5 times I just quit that part
Two problems I have with Emerl. 1. Trying to get the move you want is an utter crap-shoot. The skill(s) you get are random, so have fun trying to get that one move you want. Or skin. 2. The game does not show how many skill points move cost. So if a move you like costs too much points, ya gotta equip/unequip different skills and it takes SO. FREAKIN. LONG.
Shadow's trap actually follows him, not the opponent. Tails's follows opponents on the ground, Rouge's follows in the air, Chaos's has a multi-hit, Gamma's explodes on it's own, Knuckles's hides underground, and the rest just sit there.
I won't lie, that self-destruct is the third most annoying mechanic in the game, aside from the second place Cream protection missions, and the King Cruel Godly Chaos fight. Seriously, you cannot get hit by Chaos in the Estuary Match, or you WILL die!
Oh man, that Knuckles mission. I ended up circling the stadium for ages, stopping at every other corner to charge up my insta-kill meter for a second or two (because any longer and the robots would catch up). Then, when it was full, I'd wait for them to walk up to me and pray that I could connect the O.H.K.O. attack... Now, the boxercise fights with Amy? That's something terrible.
I can imagine Gamma is sitting in a back room covered in dust, right next to all of the failed Metal Sonic models and some empty fake emeralds that Eggman couldn't bring himself to just throw away. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if Eggman has a NOSTALGIA room for all of his old crap when he no longer used it, kind of like that hallway in Mother 3 on the way to Porky's room.
Well, you could use that device that allows you to play GBA games on the gamecube so you can play sonic battle on the big screen. It's all about getting use to the game. It's not really that hard when you learn a few tricks, like abusing the CPU guard mechanism or rebounding off walls you were hit into to jump back and attack the enemy. I personally love this game and its just something I can never really get bored off, especially when theres a customizable character available :)
Imho, Sonic Battle is tons of fun. I've reached the final eggman fight so far, and damn is Eggman a cheating bastard there (as always). I wish you did playthrough of the entire game, seeing as it has some awesome dialogue and questionable themes. (Club Rogue?)
I love Sonic Battle. If you wanted to play it on the big screen, you know you could just use the BGA adapter for the gamecube right? Well anyway, like the story and the graphic but most of all, love the gameplay of this game and the amount of customization you can do on Emerl, its awesome. I dont blame you for not doing a full playthrough though.
Wow Clement i don't see why that was so hard for you xD Love ya but it was easy(The Knuckles part) All you had to do was Knuckle them against the wall and keep Juggling...
I wonder if anybody knows that you can block a special attack from an opponent who is flashing. If the block is successful, you will absorb their entire ki gauge.
you know, i played that game all the way through, and you're right, some of the fights were a PAIN, that mission with knuckles had me going like twenty times with no success at all. But besides that, i did like the game, not as an awesome gonna-play-all-the-time kind of game, but as an entertaining one, especially with emerl, where i could customize him with a lot of the cool moves and i even went to the point of finding codes to get all the cards and have some ultimate moves. It was fun
I like the idea of customizing Emerl, but when I wanna switch one of my attacks sometimes it doesnt let me, and kinds makes a buzzing noise as if im not aloud to do it. Help!
+Matthew Kwon But the main problem is that the Skill Points only reach up to 500 and not 999. So, I can't equip ALL of the most powerful moves in the game.
I got the game and the Guard Robo were a little hard but I won on the first time. I dont know why its so hard for him?! XD Anyway, the game is fun I suggest you get it.
if you want to play this game download the rom and play it on a emulator and connect your computer to a big screen monitor or just your regular monitor in full screen mode
I had to endure weeping and gnashing of the teeth to beat this game, but I came through, and never regretted it. But yeah, the game is WAY TOO FREAKIN' HARD...wish they'd take this concept and do it right on the DS.
