The lead developer for Sonic 4 actually tried to say Casino Street was not inspired by any previous zone. I dislike liars, but I DESPISE bad ones. They insult your intelligence.

I love this game and it's sequel! Imo this series is underrated!

Finally! I've been following your Sonic LP's for almost 4 years now and I've been looking forward to this one the most.

Yaaaaaas, Man I love your Sonic playthroughs, they're the reason I started getting back into Sonic after I related it to someone I hated. Which was admittedly a bad decision for me because I love Sonic.

Welp.. why you've given me a new perspective ragarding Episode 1 of Sonic 4. I still think it's a rather lack luster game.. but I've been replaying it and I've been having a blast! Good job as always Clement!

I can't really describe it but Sonic's model looks weird in the visuals of the level, like idk he's too shiny or plastic or something and it looks weird in contrast to the rest of the level.

As disappointing as Sonic 4 was ultimately.. I still found myself coming back to it every now and then (only for Episode 2 though)..was it a decent and good game? Yeah sure.. was it a good sequel to S3&K? Nope, not even close lol. I feel if Sega gave this game a different title people would've been easier on the game (like the NSMB games). The critics generally liked this game a lot though.

Physics aside, it was dumb how they stripped away several innovations Sonic 2, 3&K, CD, Advance, etc [Disclaimer: I'm only talking about the 2D Sonic games here] added to the franchise for this game. No Tails [even if he was re-added in Episode 2], no knuckles, not even Amy from the Advance games, etc. This game tries too hard to cater to nostalgia [and it doesn't help that they made it episodic], so much so that the game suffers and regresses its own gameplay for it. Instead of furthering the formula [or at the very least just having all of the previous major innovations return], they just rehash the bare bones by comparison first game. I'm all for revisiting the Classic formula, but Sonic Team really dropped the ball by removing so much of it. That is why the game is a complete let down to me, not due to asinine reasons like green eyes, nor important albeit less obvious reasons like the physics, but the fact that they stripped out so much of the innovations the sequels brought. It's not a *bad* game by any means, just a huge let down.

This game really should'a been called something else. Probably something like Sonic Retro Remix.

My immediate thought when seeing this in my subscription box was "Holy shit! Already?" I guess you've been doing this for so long I couldn't imagine you playing the somewhat recent games. Congrats, Clement, you've made it this far, hope you'll be prepared for the big final boss fuckfest that is Sonic Boom.

It's kind amazing how much better Part 2 is than Part 1.

I like the game, obviously calling it Sonic 4 was a mistake, and the physics are a bit unusual (and inferior), AND the rolling is pointless.... BUT, it's still a lot of fun. The levels are designed well for the most part, and when you try to speed run it, they seem expertly designed. Seriously, most people will never notice how well these levels are designed when going for crazy fast times. Episode 2 lost that though, didn't like that one at all.

While I'm not interested in Sonic 4, I was really hyped to see an LP of it so you can imagine how happy I was to see this in my sub box.

You know it's real refreshing to hear someone talking about sonic 4 and not bitch about every single little thing that's not like the old days. The game has problems but this game itself is fine. I think the game has merit. Definitely not at the same standards of the original trilogy, but still good on it's own, especially considering what came before and what came since.

I think the biggest issue of all with Sonic 4 is that sonic Generations came out like right after it.

Splash Hill Act 3 is my favorite song in the entire game. Sunset Dash...I love it.

Pretty much every time I see a playthrough of this game, I stop when they get to the level with the cannons. I think people probably wouldn't complain about the physics and automation as much if the level design was a bit better.

I didn't hate sonic 4 like others but ... I have to wonder why can't they pull a megaman 9&10 and just make another game with the same look and feel and control of the original games. It would be SO easy for them to do...

I really like how Sonic 4 takes us back to the classic series of Sonic.

I do like the bit of story they give to explain the return of classic bosses, that Eggman's actually running low on funds and is stalling while he gets his next plan into place, so rather then make all new egg-machines he re-works several old ones.

This was THE first game i was ever excited for, well mainly because i was like 9 or 10 when it came out

Ah, the sound track really reminded me of Sega Carnival from Sonic Riders. Really reminiscent of their classic theme. Although, I suppose that would be the point. ^^' Nice little touch all the same.

I like how you stopped to salute the Eggman sign before crossing the goal in the first act.

Since Sonic 4 Episode 1 is a perfectly fine, enjoyable game, then I must also say that I think Shadow the Hedgehog is a perfectly fine, enjoyable game despite its flaws. Yeah, I said it. Come at me.

I've never played this game before so this will be an interesting LP to see. It looks like it took away a lot of things from the 2D Sequels and mostly focused on Sonic 1.

"Certainly we never swung on vines in the old games." Well, we did in Sonic the Hedgehog 3...they didn't control the same, but still. Also, the special stages remind me of Bejeweled...I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

The unused theme for the boss in Sonic 3D Blast is funny!

I was hyped for this game cause I thought it would be like the old games. What we got is anything but it's still ok but has a lot of flaws. If you know how to play it, it can take you roughly 2-3 hours but if you go 100% and getting all 7 Emeralds, about 4 hours. The last part of the game will drive you nuts. Though why... why does it have to be 4 stages? Sonic 1 had 6 stages plus Final Zone. Sonic 2 had 10 stages plus Death Egg. Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) had 3 playable characters with their own levels (Sonic: 14, Tails: 13, Knuckles: 12) Sonic 4... four levels in episode 1, 5 in episode 2 (plus Episode Metal consisting of 4 stages) What went wrong?

Remember liking this game, it was a nice little run down memory lane but hated the special stars though they were terrible controls springs bouncing me everywhere and the time was so strict but that's what I remember

This series of games were shot down without getting much of a chance, I honestly liked the Sonic 4 series, but i do wish that there was a concluding episode 3 to the series.

I'm very mixed on Sonic 4 and that goes for episodes 1 and 2. I love the nostalgia, some of the levels to this game are really really fun and amazing, some of the songs are really good. I am however, one of those people who complain about momentum. My biggest problem in this game was how much you had to rely on the speed boosters to go fast, or to get anywhere. When Sonic Generations came out the classic Sonic levels felt like Classic Sonic, but the controls to this felt so stiff. I liked going so fast you could go off the screen. I also liked Episode 1 more then 2, but I'll talk more about that when you get there.

I've never been a true 2D Sonic fan. While Sonic the Hedgehog (1) was technically the 1st Sonic game I played (albeit the demo version on Sega Smashpack for the Dreamcast) and I enjoyed it, after being introduced to Sonic Adventure, boy did it completely rewrite my interests in the Sonic series!

I can't believe you are this optimistic about this game. I don't even have nostalgia (maybe that's why) for the genesis games yet I find this as an insulting, unimaginative and frustrating experience.

While Sonic 4 certainly has it's merits, there are a lot of things that really bug me. Like how this game does not feel like a sequel and more of a retro remix. Many of the zones are blatant clones of classic zones, there are no new boss fights in episode 1, and it has only sonic one and two nostalgia. There are a lot of things I liked about Sonic 3 like how each zone transitioned into each other. A throw back is fine every once in a while but after this game came up it is all Sonic has been doing. I know that it is not this game's fault but it started the trend. It's kind of like New Super Mario Bros in the Mario series. I think Mario and Sonic have the same problem of over relying on nostalgia and throw backs to the point where it has become the status quo and it is tiresome in resent years..

I did not know that boss track was from 3D Blast/Flickie's Island. Aaah, Clement.... teaching us Sonic fans new things since.. uh... holy shit how long have you been doing these LPs?! :P Anyways yeeeeah I definitely, deeeefinitely got the nostalgia attack and thought "hey this isn't as bad as people say!" but tbh when I played episode 2, which IMO is muuuch better, I find it very hard to come back and play episode 1. I appreciate it's reminiscent of the old school Sonic that I love, but it certainly won't replace it.

I find it amusing that even with the newer instruments they have for the Sonic 4 music, they still use drums that sound EXACTLY the same as the Genesis ones. It definitely works though.

Man, you mentioning the PSP made me realize that it would have been more likely to see Sonic 4 Episode 2 on the PSP than the Wii since it doesn't have the ridicolous 40 MB filesize limit that the WiiWare has. Kinda like what happened with Worms Battle Islands, which was a downloadable PSP game and a retail Wii title.

FUN FACT: Jun Senoue composed the BGM for both 3D Blast (Genesis) and Sonic 4, so I'm not surprised at all he decided to repurpose an unused track from 14 years earlier.

I got this on my tablet. I like it a lot, if it wasn't SO FLIPPING LAGGY, I'd love it.

I've yet to play the full version. Maybe I would if they were cheaper.

Correction: the full game is for the iPod/ iPhone. It has more levels on that version. And a bonus level to boot

1:50 Last I checked, Episode I still works on iOS and Android, which is where I played it. For what it's worth, I played through it in full and enjoyed the heck out of it and Episode II both.
