Matt Rothblatt Its pretty much just done to make them look more intimidating. If the dog is a guard dog or some type of hunting breed however it can be done so that an attacker/other animal cant easily grab onto the dogs ears and injure them that way.

When I was a kid I used to think Dobermans were born with cropped tails and pointed ears. It wasn't until my obsession with dogs that I later found out that they were actually born with long tails and flopped ears, and that people just decided to cut their tails and make their ears pointed

My friend has one and they just call him blonde not albino because he has blue eyes not red. And they are pretty rare because they have some sort of birth defect due to inbreeding so they have poor eyesight which can lead to blindness which can cause the dog to attack the wrong people so people are advised to not breed them

it's pretty funny really. Vets aren't really required to know dogs by breed(just which illness effects certain breeds more) My girlfriend is a dog/cat groomer and works at a vet clinic. The doctors ask her all the time what breed a certain dog is. She knows them better because she's required to know them better. Certain breeds get certain haircuts but they all work pretty much the same way internally just with different wrapers.

Actually they are required to know them. They are tested over dog breeds in school. I'm not a Vererinarian but I'm in schooling to be a vet assistant and even I have to take dog breed tests

Dank Leeb cropping "floppy" eared dogs ears can actually have some health benefits for your dog! (Helps prevent chronic ear infections and other issues). Floppy ears are actually a mutation that has been popularized in dog breeds (see: no predators or prey really have floppy ears in the wild). Ahh I used to think it was cruel aswell but then I decided to do some of my own research into it : )

Centipede Monopoly generally speaking breeds with floppy ears DO NOT experience ear infections, that actually pretty much ONLY affects breeds like the cockerspaniel in which the ears are so heavy that even if the dog runs the ears won't move. That isn't the case with dobermans and most other flop eared breeds that usually get enough air flow to their ear canals anyway or just by running, of course if you never give your dog a chance to run... Then it can pose a problem that the dog has floppy ears but I don't think it's right to put your dog go through a surgery like that just because you're too lazy to take the dog to a park where it could run wild for an hour. Also many vets disagree on the benefits of ear cropping, there is a reason why countries such as Finland where I live have BANNED it... Many dogs I've seen on TV and the internet that have had their ears cropped out were obviously either cut too much because in the end cropping is mostly done for the aesthetic reasons of HUMANS and not dogs, so the dog cannot move its ears anymore which is important to their body language... And many also get infected ears because the people doing the surgeries aren't qualified enough to do the job, just because some breeder wanted their doberman puppies to look more fierce and couldn't find a proper vet who'd even be willing to do the surgery.

(Cropping is banned where i live as well). I just also think that when cropping to potentially prevent a medical issue with your pet shouldn't be so frowned upon or stigmatized (I personally know someone who has 2 great Danes the elder with natural floppy ears has lots of issues in regards to ear infections and the like and they chose to crop their newest puppies ears to prevent that.) Hh basically what I'm saying is that any procedure done to a pet should be done with pet in mind not yourself in mind and we shouldn't attack others for those choices : )
