Let's Talk About Politics | 3 Misconceptions 

1) Only the first misconception really resonated with me, the second one seemed more of a statement than a “this is something commonly believed and it’s wrong” And the third one i think is a message that some people need to take to heart, but shouldn’t apply to others. There are so many groups of people whose voices are silenced and options are brushed under the carpet. I don’t think those people need to stop worrying about their rights, I think the people who are not being silenced need to use their voice to create a space for those people being silenced to use their voice. (not speak for them, but rather to be quiet and make that space or even to tell others to be quiet to make that space) 2) I struggle with supporting the people in munich life whom I think misrepresent Christianity politically. For me that’s people who see “American values” and “Christian values” as the same. it’s people who think the most important things to know about a politician is their stance on gay marriage and abortion. It’s really hard for me to see them as a Jesus follower, because in my eyes they’re representing Him wrongly.

Jeff, I love the way you speak to this with clarity and grace! It's so needed. I have been wrestling with the whole Christianity and politics question so much personally the last few years and have dealt with so much heart-ache over the way the Church handles this issue in belief and practice. The misconception I struggled with most personally & what I saw in fellow believers was allegiance to the elephant or the donkey over the Lamb. So I really appreciate you acknowledging that there are things that agree & disagree with Jesus' teaching on both sides of the aisle. That's the realization I've come to also and I'm hoping more Christians will notice that as well and start wrestling with the implications of how that affects our political engagement. Scott Sauls talked about the same thing in his book, Jesus Outside The Lines, and it was really eye opening for me - different than the "one side of the aisle is more godly than another" way I'd been taught to believe growing up. Gosh you talk fast. Lol But amazing assesment of politics and Christians. I struggle with the first and third misconception. Although I know Christianity doesn’t mean we should not be political I don’t like mixing politics with my beliefs. For example, although I know Trump is against abortion and I am fundamental not in agreement with abortion as well based on my Christian beliefs, but I do not think Trump is a good president and would never vote for him. But this kind of goes into your second point which COMPLETELY agree with.

Yes!! Sometimes it feels like by voting we are pushing the agenda of one person...including their views we don’t agree with. However, as Christians I think we rely far too much on the government to fulfill Christ-like morality in our culture. If we could rally ourselves in our communities to love one another in the radical ways that Jesus exemplifies, over time we are affecting how the world works. I think we often see ourselves as completely powerless because we can’t sign a document that will change an entire policy (yes, only government officials can). But the point Jeff makes in this video is that really and truly our role is much bigger than to help determine who the next President is. God has given us the power of his Spirit to influence our society in ways that, if we make this our priority as the body of believers, will continue to turn the world upside down. By doing this we enthrone Jesus as the true king. Amazing video Jeff

So excited for the conversation around this one!! Couple questions to get us started: 1) Which of the 3 misconceptions do you relate with most or see most prevalent around you? 2) How are you wrestling with being an apprentice of Jesus during this political climate?

So refreshing to see a contribution to this issue with calmness and patience. Especially the part with Christians standing prophetically above the parties had an impact on me. The gap between the parties (and almost all parts of society I might add) is growing ever larger. This leaves a lot of room for us Christians to try to help!

I wish you’d be specific and talk about the political issues of today. Felt too broad. Could you do a video talking about what point 3 would actually look like? Like give an example?

I am political and Christian. One of the main reasons I started my RU-vid channel is because I feel we Christians are not involved in this world as we should and we have kinda separated into our own little world instead of influencing the world.

My favourite point was number 3 but overall this video was amazing and provided me with so much clarity thank you so much :D

That number 3 is wow, could really go deep with that. I feel like a lot of hate and anger could go away with just that. If we did more out of love then "I got to do this cause nobody is going to get away with doing such and such to me" I'm sorry, I got side tracked. I was just thinking how many of us " Christians, myself included set priority number one to walk and talk and love like Jesus Christ, not by my might.....

Love this. In addition to it politics and faith are two subjects we should talk to our loved ones about the most. Faith first and always because it has the largest impact in our daily lives. Politics because it also has a big impact in our daily lives. Impact on our money, rights, education, etc. We just need to get better at talking to our loved ones without coming across as debating or talking down to them. Love this. It hurts me when I see big names in ministry bring politics to the pulpit and act like one side and ALL its ideology is Jesus’ way. Ugh.

For those who assume Jeff probably votes for one party or the other, he just said both parties have beliefs that align with Jesus as well as having beliefs that are damaging. As a person who identifies as a centrist who has some libertarian beliefs, I agree with this.

Wow! Incredibly said. Definitely a lot of stuff in that I can put into practice. I feel that I have partially removed myself from the political scene to not step on toes, but that’s truly where the most love is needed in today’s society! Thank you for that!

I was in a world religion for a general elective. I'll be doing the second part in September. It got crazy political in class. Religion and different views.

1. Close call between 2 and 3, but if I have to choose, I would say 3. After studying American rhetoric and learning how far America has come into this huge “political split”, I have learned about demonization and sadly hear this in the Church (especially amongst baby boomers). Christians have become so focused on being “right” and having OUR way that we do not stop to understand another perspective on a political issue. 2. Personally, I prefer to stay out of the current “political” system if all every “political” person wants to do is listen to respond instead of listening to understand someone with a different perspective. The scriptures are very gray on many “political” issues, but Christians as a whole could even respond in an actual Christ like manner to the black and white issues. Instead, they demonize each other and do not want to give each other the freedom to come to their own conclusion on gray issues. Actually, we seem to let our pride get in the way (which is human nature) and either do not realize it or even try to take at least one step back from our view to re-examine if it aligns with scripture. Only God knows ALL of the answers to our “political” problems. We need to become humble enough to work together to find even a piece of the answer. Instead, we seem to be tearing each other apart.😢

I think this is a brave topic to speak about so congrats Jeff! I think you nailed it! But, I have a question. How do we use this in a practical sense? Such as, when it comes to voting how do we choose the right candidate? Do we choose the one that is CLOSEST to our beliefs, even though some of their agendas is totally against it. Or do we restrain from voting because we don’t want to encourage that particular agenda?

I appreciate Jeff taking time to write down these ideas and share them. But I guess I reflect with what some others commented on here. Sometimes I think that the modern church has tried to cope with the political climate by emphasizing broad concepts like obedience to Christ and humility. And these are important too; in fact, I can sure do my fare share of being more on top of it. But at the same time, some things go unaddressed... maybe to not cause division. Like my church background community believes that president Trump is ordained by God through prophecy to bring this nation back to God, and that Hilary Clinton is "against the family". Statements like these really turn me off... also, I'm part of the LGBT community, and it sucks to see people treating us as moral scapegoats and blaming the fall of society on us as if we don't already have our fair share of baggage to deal with (internalized homophobia, promiscuity, high levels of mental health and suicide ideation, violence/hate crimes, lack of representation in society, etc.).

Political ideologies have replaced religion to a large degree. Jesus is mixed in when it furthers whatever agenda and unfortunately, people have developed a religious type faith for different political parties.

Completely agreed! I don’t aligned myself with either party BECAUSE I am a Christian and I pledge allegiance to none other than the lamb that was slain! It always bothers me when Christians are staunchly conservative (or liberal in some cases) as if any political party holds the same moral authority of the Bible. If they were really in the Word, they’d be more concerned with the Lord’s business and winning souls for Him rather than political tribal foolishness.

Really good stuff, Jeff! My biggest concern when it comes to participating in politics is this: you say that as christians that we stand above the 2 parties. However, with how it set up in America at least, we are essentially signing our name and endorsing whichever candidate we vote for. So in essence we are endorsing Obama's policies of bombing the middle East and supporting abortions. Or we are supporting Trump's policies which undermine human worth like the death penalty and empowerment of ICE etc. So I don't know how firmly I believe this, but for these reasons I've chosen to no longer vote at least for presidents. Hope that makes sense!

amen... There are good and bad on dem or repub side.. which is why I dont think it makes sense to constantly align with a single party. I also think a good test is to be able to name one person from the "other" party you normally align with you would vote for. If you can't , chances are you are beholden to a political party over truth/good.

And if I'm being honest, I know God would want me to love everyone but I struggle with religions that kill, destroy and take over whole countries and sow discord throughout the land they inhabited. I struggle with that!

Thanks for the video. You are right, Jesus is Lord. Many people have this escapist mentality which largely stems from a rapture view. The world won't get better, but Christ still desires that we involve ourselves into politics, society, and the Gospel should be our motivation. christ is ruling through his church, that is why he said he had all authority under heaven and earth "THEREFORE go and preach the Gospel to all the nations . . ." Jesus has all authority. There is no place on earth where God isn't already. Then God will come and set the sheep on his right, and the goats on his left. God bless

I base my vote on the truth that God decided to give the individual man (Adam) freewill. If God saw fit that man should be free to choose, then what power should an institution of man have to dictate that men shouldn’t have free will? Instances of free will that I disagree with are drinking and getting drunk, smoking, using drugs, homosexuality, etc. However, I recognize that these are sins that are destructive to the individual and hence fall under free will that should not be legislated. Whenever a sin is destructive beyond the individual (murder, theft, rape, abortion), those are the sins that should be legislated. I also vote on the premise that God gave us a mind and ability to speak freely, whether or not He likes what we think or say. So, I support absolute free speech. I also vote on the premise that God gave animals claws, sharp teeth, and gave man a mind to develop weapons in leu of sharp teeth and claws, so I must support the second amendment to be consistent. Furthermore, Jesus himself had Peter buy a sword for defense.

Technically are we the image bearer of Adam or God? ... who has the sin nature? We still need to follow Jesus and love our enemies, but if we were all little images of God would we have enemies outside of evil?

Matthew 22:21 Jesus said "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."

But is it ok to see The enemy's politics OK, as a viewpoint?

I usually don’t comment on any RU-vid videos nowadays, but I feel I need to add something to this discussion. The main reason I’m a republican is because I see that the Republican Party is trying to keep God in society, while the Democratic Party is trying to revoke him out of the public entirely ;from schools, jobs etc) and make a secular society overall. I cannot align with a party that does not embrace Jesus. Not to mention, that abortion is wrong and republicans are opposed to that as well. It does appear however that Democrats are more empathetic to certain people, such as minorities and those in poverty, however the way they go about this is wrong. For example, they play the victim card and claim victim status. The rich have to pay their “fair share” and white people have “privilege” etc These are all just excuses for them to blame others for their problems and polarize the country by getting people to hate each other. I would be interested to see a video of what Christian principles you see from both parties. It is a very large topic of discussion.

During the 2016 elections I got weird looks from my church because I voted for Bernie Sanders in the primaries. While everyone else voted republican. As I grew older my political leanings changed more conservative. I can’t get over however that people there were judging me in the way I voted back then.

Sacrificing one's rights is unGodly and weak, not generous. Put your own life vest on before assisting others-then assist others! We are endowed with rights by our Creator for a reason. Be strong, provide for your family and yourself, protect your borders (individually, group-based, and nationally), and protect your family and self everywhere. Carry weapons (Lk. 11:36) and handle and use them judiciously. Enforce national sovereignty, i.e., border security. Though you may disagree with others' personal choices, respect their Liberty, and encourage them to see the other side if you wish (libertarianism). The Left, however, worships the state and encourages its ultimately evil manifestation, communism. It hates individual freedom-the right to self-defense and the rights of the unborn among them. It celebrates the genocide of children and sells their organs. The RINOs betray us and God through their policies inconsistent with the Constitution, too. There are good people that subscribe to Democratic beliefs, as humans are naive and idealistic, but the party is evil. No equivocating will change the truth of that.

I don't want to say that we can't be political, but we also have to recognize that we are citizens of heaven, not of this world. 2) Amen! As a German, it really shocked me that Christians in America got the most ungodly candidate elected just because he represents a certain party. The name "evangelical" has become absolutely laughable - in Europe, most people connect evangelicals with right-wing racist sexist egomanic politics now, which would start another world war on Twitter, just to defend its own agenda.
