So, yeah we've had the casting announcements for our main pair for the upcoming (as in two years away) live action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon. And whilst i'm sure that these are talented actors. I'm a little apprehensive. Let's discuss.

Tbh the race change makes me a little concerned, I know it's fiction but there still vikings after all. But if she can pull a good portrail of Astrid than it's fine, I am afraid they are taking the Disney rout with "diversity for the sake of it", I am willing to overlook the age gap if the chemestey between them will be there. I am still skeptical about this film, but I think it can pull it off
@witheredprince859

TBH in a lot of the other race swaps I'm fine with it, because they are just that, race swaps, and they could plausibly have been that race in the original franchise, however this is set in the viking era, on a viking island. The plausibility isn't there, and so it sorta does feel like "diversity for the sake of it". However I am definitely willing to overlook race for good acting, though I'm not willing to overlook a cheap live-action remake of possibly my favourite series if it does become one.

I’m not a fan of either of the castings (or the idea of a live-action remake), and the Astrid race swap isn’t something I want to get in to after having already discussed it with Tinkerbell, Ariel, Aragorn, and Annabeth. But the film will truly fail if they don’t cast Gerard Butler as Stoic, since he’s a larger name, the original VA, And fits the appearance well. He’d be the perfect choice.
@TheYoungGeninSasuke
@TheYoungGeninSasuke Год назад
Let me guess, the race swap ruins the characters?
@Will_Morand
@Will_Morand Год назад
Not necessarily. I'd say it ruins Aragorn since it outright changes his lineage in-universe. But the idea of race swaps is more of a minor annoyance that's symptomatic of a larger issue. A well-written character who's been race-swapped can still be enjoyable, such as Heimdall in the Thor movies. But more often than not, they're linked to a poorly written remake of a beloved property banking on nostalgia to draw an audience and hiding behind the race swap when people criticize the writing, as well as using a superficial race swap to get their diversity brownie points rather than actually putting in the effort to create an original story around a character of color. So the issue is less that characters are being race swapped and as such ruined and more that studios are growing creatively bankrupt and trying to hide behind arguments or racism when called out on it.

On top of all of that, I really wish they left this franchise alone, it's not enough they made a joke out of the characters in the 3rd film 4 years ago or so, now they wanna stain the original with what will probably be a heartless piece of trash meant to be nothing more than a cash grab.

This is very inappropriate and people should be speaking up a lot more about this.. also if all these races swaps are taking place and it’s all cool then let’s go away and make princess and the frog white in live action. I’m sure everyone will be “okay” with them changing the original African American princesses race? It’s the double standards that don’t make sense to me. Since they wanna change races of original white characters but we can’t ever change original black characters race. It’s very contradictory. It’s either we don’t like race swaps or we do. Okay, the thing about not casting people who look like the characters; its supposed to be a live action of the movies. Its supposed to be the characters "in real life". Even with how screwed up the storyline is in the PJ movies, at least they cast them more to visually fit the characters. Their casting for Percy is the only reason I kept watching the movies because it felt like I was actually looking at a real life Percy. Also when they do this, they directly put the actors in the firing line. These actors have to do twice as well to be considered a "good version" of the character. And, while it may mot matter to you, the visuals of a character are half of their recognizability. When designing a character, all the details are added for a reason. Astrid's hair being in a braid shows that she's active. The skulls on her belt and her shoulder guard show she's a warrior. Her being blonde and blue eyed is a tieback to the stereotypical visual of "Viking". Her appearance was made that way for a reason. It may not be expressed in the main story, but I promise you it 100% has an effect on her story and how the audience perceives her actions. And again, appearance is half of the recognizability. We'll use Percy Jackson here. Black windswept hair, sea green eyes. His appearance alludes to his heritage before its mentioned. If they saw a black haired kid with green eyes and a copper sword/pen, readers would unconsciously make a connection to Percy. Any character you think of has a 'face' like this, certain visual characteristics that make them recognizable. And for the general audience who usually can't be bothered to remember specifics, hair and eye color is massively important, especially in a live action. Its the features they're going to use to identify the character.

Here is the thing: On one hand, I absolutely expect a great movie. Like, after having seen Detective Pikachu (yes different studio, I know), I'm absolutely sure you can incorporate fictional creatures in a movie and still make them more or less look like they did in animated shows. On the other tho, I'm not sure how well I'll adjust to the characters looking different. Like, just from looking at Hiccups and Astrids actors, I know there will be no focus at all on accuracy to the animated movies. And I'm already kinda scared if they cast conveniently attractive people for Fishlegs, Snotlaut and Ruffnut and Tuffnut, like they already did with Hiccup. Not to mention that they didn't even bother casting scandinavians or at the very least northern europeans. Also, I just feel like it doesn't really translate well into live action? Like, I think we all remember the scene where Hiccup fed Toothless for the first time and then Toothless spit out half of that fish and basically told him to eat it. HOW is an actor supposed to even remotely compare to animated Hiccups reaction in that moment? Same with that scene when they flew for the first time without the cheat note and the rope on that tree stump. That moment when Hiccup felt this absolute joy at being able to do it, just for Toothless to spew fire and Hiccups face changing to absolutely done in a millisecond? I just know those scenes won't be nearly as iconic if they aren't animated

I'm a little skeptical because I'm a big fan of this franchise and I'm not sure how they'd be able to improve on it. However, I also think the casting is great. The actress for Astrid did great in The Last of Us and is it just me or does she actually look quite similar to Astrid? Like, ignoring the race thing, I think her face-shape is close enough somehow and Astrid's appearance has never really been a big thing in the franchise. I'd say her outfit and braid are more iconic and just putting her in something similar would immediately make her recognizable as Astrid. The actor for Hiccup looks similar enough as well. I'm more worried about the dragons, especially Toothless because his appearance really has become very iconic. Since the fans are a little older now and it's life action, I kind of hope they'll use this as an opportunity to show the grittier things and improve on the viking/dragon conflict. The original is already so good at this, but I hope they use this movie as a way to improve on it even more.

Remember when people were celebrating (for whatever reason) that a black actress was cast to play a live-action version of ARIEL all while saying her race doesn't matter? Very hypocritical of them as it goes against her race seemingly not mattering. Well *clearly her race matters to them* to be celebrating it in the first place. Physical appearance will *NEVER* not be important for a character. It's why people put time and effort into it, and it's how people immediately recognize who they're watching. You can often tell a lot about a character just by looking at them. And the more iconic the better. That frizzy dark-haired, olive-skinned girl will *never* be Astrid, because we don't see Astrid, we see a cosplayer, we see the actor and not the character. Nobody who looked at _Velma_ saw the Scooby Gang, just some rando kids having a costume party, and their outlandish, unlikable personalities further alienated them from the audience.

But I can see how the main characters not looking like before could be jarring for fans. The first movie is very different from the book, but was well received. Maybe if the remake was more close to the book, or why not : just made up a third version of the story, with new designs for the dragons, it could have his own identity ? I want to be hopeful because it's Dreamworks, I want to see them showing to Disney how to do a good remake, even with color blind casting, but I doubt that they will put much effort into it. 😮‍💨

I don't take issue with either. There have been tons actors who weren't actually Trans playing a Trans character (Angel from Rent, Coach Beast from Glee), so it's usually not seen as offensive. Also, race swaps aren't offensive unless their race or culture is heavily emphasized in the story. Viking isn't a race, it's a job title. So Europeans haven't been the only Vikings. There were vikings of color as well.

Kinda out of topic but still: I think that they should based THiS new adaptation on Book series rather than just refilm the animated movie (cause that’s just boring honestly and the animation has so little common with books so). The books are BRILLIANT and they feature a lot of important and mature topics(which you would definitely not expect from child books) like human/dragon slavery, constant conflicts between tribes (the worldbuilding there is freaking amazing like author didnt have to go that hard and create such sophisticated maps), growing up , peace, prophecy of Viking King and reunion of tribes (history is crazy there too, like Why did Cressida Cowell went so far…books are seriously underrated + the humor is simple sometimes childish but still manages to be funny), war between mankind and dragons (most of the dragon species there are highly intelligent creatures like humans)…There is everything you want from fantasy books really. The characters are younger though (12-14), but I think if they would made them a bit older, it wouldnt matter that much. The main female lead is Kamikadzi (she is not love interest, more like partner in crime and bestie, Hiccup meets her in third book where somehow Roman dragon slavers appear but yet in the end Hiccup said that he is sure that there are many chill and good Romans but they are home in their land not conquering Viking lands and slaving dragons) and she is more crazy and quirky than Astrid but it’s interesting name and she also comes from another tribe of thieves (Bog-Burglar Islands) which creates more tension between her and Hiccup. Hiccup personality on the other side is very simular to Hiccups in animation. However, he is not physically strong (and he is bullied too), but he becomes skilled in swordfighting (he’s quick, has tactictal thinking) There are many, like many tribes and everyone of them have significant features and culture which is…Well just amazing. The plot and the vibe in the book series is getting darker and darker and in the last free books there is literally war going on, Hiccup was disinherit from his own tribe (thats very complicated to explain so…) and he ends up in slavery prison. Yeah, and if thats not enough there is whole Mission going on collecting things that belonged to the last King of Viking land (Hiccups forefather) and annoying, smirky villian Alvin survining falling into vulcano, being eaten by dragon and stuff like that (he loses every part of the body you can live without like nose (voldemort vibes lol), leg, arm, teeths, hair…creepy I know.) He is trying to trick everyone against Hiccup but actually his plans were kinda smart (bonus points: he is actually trying to KILL Hiccup eventhogh he failes). Alvin’s mother is a really scary witch and she is just so insane (in One Book Hiccup is locked with here in the celll inside the freaking tree and they are playing mind games like…) He is not the only antagonist(many conflict with another tribes, in one Book Hiccup accidently shoot an arrow into the ass of the chief of one crazy tribe so yeah…) but the real villian in the end. So yes, ladies and gentleman, this is book series for kids, but the themes and ideas are insane and so inspiring. IMAGINE what they could done with all this (and this all is just a small snippet from what is going on there). (Sorry if I made any grammar mistakes, English is not my first languange, but I was trying:))

I'm not so much concerned abt the age difference. It's not bad. In greatest showman, Zendaya and the other guy had a significant age difference. But it still did good. I'm just concerned abt the main characters and the looks and animations of the dragons. Out of the franchise, hiccup and Astrid r the two most favored out of human characters. They specifically will b getting the most attention along with the dragons. They r basically required ( by the HTTYD fandom) to look and feel the part. If they can do GOT level animations for this movie. I'll b astonished if they can pull of this stunt.

Great idea to do what Disney is doing; ruining animated movies with a boring remake, instead of giving us Eldorado 2. No need to be creative and fun! Be lazy! It can get you a lot of money... more if the movie would be good cause people will tell their friends and families to see it. If it's awful, everyone will convince you to not pay a cinema ticket to watch it. I guess Dreamwork forgot that tiny important detail. Not very smart 😅 If i would work at this compagny, i would make a Rise of the gaurdians show. The new villain would be based on the Headless horseman, would capture kids who don't listen to their parents and hide them in a spooky forest full of dead trees. Jack and Tooth the fairy are a couple, will save kids with Jamie Benet; who's a teenager. His sister Sophie would go with Bunny. There would be action, friendship and drama. The story will be more dark than the movie but will have a few jokes. A good balance of humor and serious moments.

Then I searched them up I’m not gonna change my mind just because I know what race she is. Hiccup looks perfect tho

Before he was, wisened up, got replaced for a sec, then was factory reset and set back. It did have a nice story for woody helping others find their place and the villain was good

I'm sceptical to say the least. Maybe because I've never been a fan of mixing animated animals and actors. The dragons we see on TV like Game of Thrones are giant, dangerous lizards while Toothless is supposed to look cute. I don't know if they're able to make him look realistic and cute to appeal to the young audience. As for the casting ... The actress looks shouldn't change the character which it doesn't. That's why changes like Ariel, Tinkerbell and Annabeth Chase are okay. But it's also supposed to fit in the world. I can imagine that there were a few mixed raced vikings since the vikings traveld a lot. Maybe they met some Africans and had babys. Who knows? I'm not a historian. BUT the general viewer expects a Scandinavian to be whiter than white. Shows like Vikings cemented that expectation. It's not about accurency (We can't get that either way because we weren't there back then), it's about authenticity. Therefore the actress could stick out. Especially if they cast only white actors for the other roles.

The whole Astrid thing is about representation. Two percent of the world's population has Astrid's natural light blonde hair and blue eyes. This is 'problem for Hollywood. That mean's 98% of viewers who watch the live action 'How To Train Your Dragon', won't be able to see themselves as Astrid. This is problematic for studio DEI executives. They must adhere to the 'Bechtel Test', otherwise the movie will not qualify for trophies during award season. So, looking Scandinavian in Scandinavia a thousand years ago creates problems for Hollywood Studios. Because of this, Astrid and Tinkerbell must be erased and replaced, so that 98% of the population doesn't get triggered by the other 2% on screen.

I want to be Skeptical about this I really do I have been very surprised in the past did I ever think Heath Ledger was going to be the best Joker ever hell no but he proved me wrong, I love the 3 movies I have even seen the short spinoff movies and some of the Series on Netflix, and then I find out there for some stupid reason deciding to make a Live Action movie I mean WTF there is no need to why do they even feel the need to make every animated movie a Live Action movie. I doubt this movie will surprise me and I highly doubt it will do well but I could be wrong, let us's talk about what we know the choice for Hiccup seems OK I really have nothing to say about it I don't know who the guy is not gonna lie about that, the problem I have is with the choice for Astrid probably the 2nd main character in the franchise if not Hiccup's dad. This is not the first time they have had this actress race swap someone it happened in The Last Of Us, have I watched it NO, do I plan to probably not, I have nothing against the actress I just hate Race Swapping it's just BS and should stop, the Vikings had no Black People and although the choice for Astrid is mixed race it still isn't white which is pretty much what Scandinavians were. Surely there is a Scandinavian actress out there and if not Scandanavian then a White actress, could this actress pull it off who knows, but it seems like there not even using their brains it's just utter BS in my opinion and all this race swapping needs to stop because all it's doing is angering the fans of the Franchise.

We all know this gonna turn out decent at best and "first ATLA live action" level at worst. But let's address the elefant in the room. Why is Astrid, A NORDIC gal, which are part of the most whitest skinned and blonde people in the world, so-- Hispanic looking? How will they style her accurately? Will they change the character's whole look or directly bleach and dye her whole head? Don't get me wrong, she'll probably be a great Astrid but it still sits wrong with me. I can get behind Ariel, because she is a mythological creature and the setting of the movie seems central european, same with Tinkerbell (let's not speak of the acting), but a Scandinavian person? It's true the first Scandinavian ppl were more dark skinned and dark eyed than the current ones, but the ones living on and after the "viking age" were half descendants of russian migrants, essentially making their skin colour really light as far as I remember. (Correct me if I'm wrong or getting something mixed up btw). Assuming this executive decision was made for inclusivity's sake, Is it truly representation or diversity if we turn every character brown-skinned? Even when historically, it's iffy at best? They could have made her a new character as in an "alternate universe" who so happens to have the same role as Astrid, but race-swap? Seriously? Can we please not race-swap anyone, no matter who, without an accurate reason?

So Astrid’s race doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It does surprise me though since my brain thought the casting would be very white since I thought the series took place in some fictionalized Scandinavia. Then I remembered the key word: fictionalized. They can do whatever they want with the cast since it doesn’t need to reflect real life and it doesn’t impair the ability to suspend disbelief.
