Still SM57 on the amp but professionals, like Mayhem are using Amp sims for the latest records and they sound amazing. I recently recorded bass using amp sim and that was so gudd i think i will try on guitar too

i was NOT born in 1970, (1945 for me) but I ended up doing more than a bit of live thrash mixing. At one time or another I toured with Anthrax (15 years or so), Slayer, Morbid Angel (more the Tampa Death metal scene) and ended up mixing some thrash opening acts in Japan while on tour with Anthrax. Having a killer drums are paramount, The leads are fast and furious. I really enjoyed the lesson, the mix was stellar and I appreciate Kai (sic) is a Cubase user. For awhile with Anthrax I used an Akai1000 for kick and snare samples (too much processing delay) but then we discovered the d-drum sampler which had very little delay and was non-midi (could do over 900 levels of loudness sensitivity) Put it on 0 sensitivity and there's your blast kick! I do have a confession: in my many years with Anthrax, Charlie Benante's snare ALWAYS had a little gated reverb added to make it a bit bigger than life. Absolute thrash heresy!

Nice. I grew up in Oakland and Berkeley in the late 70's, while thrash metal was being invented. I got to watch it grow out of our local garages and keg parties. This was years before people had ever even heard the term "thrash metal."Old school for thrash metal is late 70's, just so people know it didn't just pop out the middle of nowhere. It evolved from garage bands doing covers of metal, hard rock, punk, and especially heavy metal. Also, _Ogre Battle_ by Queen has one of the first thrash metal riffs ever.

First of all this song “Traitor - Total Trash” is amazing, and Kai did an excellent course where he shows in all details how to mix the song. And it’s so great to see you talking on this wonderful channel! Really amazing video! Thank you so much Warren, Kai and Kristian for everything you do! I'm from '61. I've lived through those days. When rock became Hard rock and Hard Rock became Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath was Hard rock. Iron Maiden was Hard rock. Judas Priest was Hard Rock. It wasn't until Meallica came to the fore we started making a difference between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. I remember driving to the very first Aardschok (Earthshaker) Festival in Den Bosch, Holland, and Guido Gevels, future singer of Belgian metal band Cyclone, put-on a cassette he had gotten from James Hetfield with a bunch of songs Metallica were gonna release as demos. When it came to "Whiplash", the car, a small Ford Fiesta, started bopping all over the tarmac in accordance to our head-banging. Later, we got thrown out of our local pub (Den Arend/The Eagle) in Machelen for causing too much trouble by playing Metallica, a band no-one had ever heard about. Cyclone later made two albums with RoadRunner and played as openers in Brussels for Metallica, Metal Church and Anthrax, back in 1987. Good times bro, good times.

Nice video with some great insight to mixing Metal. I have an old HUghes & Kettner Access and you can get some heavy-ish tones from that. Maybe if you lived in and through that 80's thrash beginnings and ( at least tried to play some thrash covers) there is a sound from that era still ringing in our ears or memory. Sepultura weren't to bad either back then. Thanks very much

I grew up in the Bay Area as Thrash metal was coming up. The German band Accept's "Fast as a Shark" was a song early on that was a big influence in thrash metal. I hate to say it but music scenes were almost based on you drug of choice, and thrash metal definitely had a lot of meth fueling that sound as well.

@8:36 "Tight". Can someone translate this term into English for me? I have no clue what is being intended by this term. Is he referring to narrowness of dynamic range, ie highly compressed? Or is this a term relating to rigid tempo compliance with gridmapped click tracks, meaning digital correction of every drum sound to correspond with strict mathematical division of the time?
@negromister
@negromister Год назад
...it's in English? Listen to the context - he's referring to playing close to the grid/metronome.
@Producelikeapro

Interesting about the German connection because Angus Young said it sounds like German Oompah music. I didn't like early thrash because having listened to classic rock I thought where is the rest of the drum kit? Thrash only seemed to have this dull drum sound about it

So, I want to upgrade my monitors and my budget is 1500€ maybe even 1600€. I record and play mostly metal music. My studio room is 3x3 meters and treated with acoustic panels and bas traps. What do you think which monitors would work best with what I have? Thanx a bunch!! Alem

Not directed at You guys specifically, but I really miss dynamic range in my thrash. Modern stuff sounds cleaner, but the constant loudness feels like someone is pushing bricks into my ears, and i just have to stop listening halway through a song. It's like reading a text written in only capital letters, it's fine for the first few seconds, but after that the eyes just want to look somewhere else. For years i thought i was getting too old for my favorite genre, then it turned out all it needed was some of that lovely DR. Don't really get why music is produced like that, we've got volume knobs if we wanted it louder. Anyway, thanks for another great vid.

Tricks (my own): 1. if you are an ITB guy, when mixing thrash metal drum, put two parallel drum bus compressors: NEVE 33609 and Softube Chandler Germanium (between emphasis EQ and de-emphasis EQ) (if you don't know what these two are, check Dan Worrall), this makes your drum sounds bouncy and snappy. 2. For guitars and basses I use both Neural DSP emulations and KPA to deal with DI signals and blend the wet signal I get with microphone recorded tracks. 3. After adding FX (reverb and delay) to your guitars, if you want it more 3-dimensional (depth), or "analog-like", connect your outputs on audio interface to the inputs, run it through your converter one more round (but does not work properly on cheap audio interfaces sometimes). Hope these are helpful.
