Tell me more? I watched the movie, which seemed very boring and one note (like literally every scene except the opening is suffering and drama), and it struck me that almost none of it actually took place in Appalachia. I'm really wanting to understand the truth of Appalachia now.

There's a good list of books on the site Book Riot (search that + his book's title and you should find it) but a good starting place is What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte. It's not very long but has a lot to say. You might like the podcast Appodlachia. (Spoiler: they can't stand John Dammit Vance.) If you want fiction too, Old Gods of Appalachia (a horror anthology podcast and thus may contain material not suitable for all audiences) is excellent, and for all the otherworldly stuff it makes way more sense than what ol' JD is spewing. Come to the Smoky Mountains sometime, the actual mountains and not the tourist traps, and you'll feel how special it is, whatever the source of the magic may be.
@@WillowGardener Vance grew up in a Rust Belt Ohio town. He called his family transplanted hillbillies. Thousands of people migrated from Appalachia to the factory towns in the 50s & 60s. That's why you find their culture all over the country today.

He's a liability and even conservatives can agree to that, and he's up there is age. But he could potentially win the election though, so useful for the time being... but a young charismatic VP running mate, who I think is even more extreme, could be the successor if something were to "happen" to Trump. I live in West Virginia; the reasons not to vote for JD Vance are plain enough in his book "Hillbilly Elegy". He treats our region like a place where black people like me just don't exist, he tells on a bunch of private related to his grandparents marriage, and absolutely dumps on his classmates and other people where he's from all while harping on nothing but the drugs and poverty yet painting himself as some sterling exception. It sucks, he sucks, he shouldn't be anywhere near the oval office.
Would you say that Vance is kind of a tourist in Appalachia? I watched the movie version of Hillbilly Elegy, and while I'm not at all familiar with the region, it seemed like he didn't actually have much connection to it. Like the only scenes that take place in Appalachia, it's brought up that he doesn't really know the area or its traditions other than saying "syrp" and eating fried baloney sandwiches.

He was technically a Midwesterner with family ties to the region via Jackson KY but he decided to aggrandize his own achievements. He could've been a HUGE advocate for Appalachia and the Midwest in terms of education being a Yale Law grad and former military service member but he penned Appalachia as a horrific stereotype and chose the grift. I don't mean to turn this into an essay but I hate it so much because I have a story similar to Vance's: I graduated from WVU in Mechanical Engineering and did a Master's from West Virginia Wesleyan in Creative Writing in Poetry. I was blessed with a lot of great mentors and raised by my grandparents in Webster County. People from my time in highschool are nurses, tradesmen, lumberjacks, doctors, scientists, etc. but you won't hear those kinds of stories from a man like Vance. And that's nothing to say of the music and arts scenes here in West Virginia, it runs the genres from old time to punk rock to jazz to funk.
Reverse carpetbagger - moved to a northern State to take advantage of the political climate. The only good thing to come of this is that we'll get a new Senator, I think. I don't recall the law on this, and it may be that our cult-friendly governor will make the pick. Hopefully there will be a special election.

I grew up in Appalachia and absolutely detest Vance (as do most Appalachians). My daughter texted me yesterday to tell me 45 selected Vance, immediately followed up by, “He just lost Appalachia!”

I don't think trump picked Vance. I think he was chosen by the Federalist Society in the same way they chose Cannon and the last three Supreme Court justices. They need a younger, more reliable and more pliable replacement to carry out their agenda.

If more people would look up his past, they'd see he's changed his name 3 times. He didn't even grow up in Appalachia, but in Ohio, in a small town north of Cincinnati. And in addition, people from Appalachia don't like being called hillbillies by anyone not from there. And he's definitely NOT from there.

Long story short, he may have roots in Appalachia, but he is not an Appalachian. This was blatantly made obvious when he published his memoir, which instead of focusing on his experience and hardships turned into a social commentary furthering the stereotypes within the Appalachian region, creating a false narratives that outsiders took as fact. And he essentially ended by saying that if anyone in the Appalachian region knew what was good for them, they would leave like he did to “better himself.” As you can imagine, this did not go over well and several authors and scholars from the region have published responses with much less recognition from the mainstream. Furthermore, during the 2016 presidential race he was used a commentator/spokesperson to explain Appalachian’s draw to Trump to the rest of the world, which seemed to help launch his political career.

Can you go into more detail? I've only seen the movie and read a couple articles by Appalachian academics on how he basically just paints a really surface level picture that only focuses on the problems and blames those problems on laziness or whatever instead of generations of exploitation by coal companies. I'd like to learn more about the truth of Appalachia and what he got wrong.

Vance is never going to pull anyone that wasn't already voting for Trump and he might actually get people who would otherwise vote Trump to sit out. Sounds about right for the modern GOP. Unfortunately, I worry things are still too close for comfort.

He didn’t though. That book rubs people the wrong way because Vance’s story isn’t a real depiction of his life growing up. He cosplayed being a poor hillbilly who “made it” through sheer will. The point was to say that problems Appalachians face is of their own making and they just need to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps like he did. He’s a fraud and grifter with zero moral compass who will happily assist Trump and The Heritage Foundation with their goals so he’ll be living it up in The inner circle .

@@azishappy2035 different states have different rules but there is usually a special election eventually if a legislator moves to the executive branch. Often there is an appointed fill in until that special election. This often gets used to create an incumbent bias but it’s a flimsy one.

Vance has been a speaker at Federalist Society events. His wife also previously served as a law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court as well as Brett Kavanaugh when he was on the US Court of Appeals for the DIstrict of Columbia circuit, both of whom are connected to the Federalist Society.
When Trump initially picked Pence, I thought the same thing we’re thinking now “no dummy you’re supposed to pick someone to balance you, not to go even further. You’ve already got those far right people, you don’t need to go deeper” Well shut my mouth, because on January 6th Pence showed that Pence was the only thing Trump did right.
Pence was picked for the evangelical vote , and it worked ! It gave trump some credibility, Vance is for wall street and the Tech Boys- Thiel has been financing Vance from the start and Vance made his fortune on Wall Street.
The problem (according to Trump) was that he picked someone last time who actually believed in something else more than he believed in Trump. This time he wants to be sure of absolute loyalty.
Pence did cover a weakness for Trump it solidified his support among evangelicals and other Christian fascists when Trump was still the multi time divorced abuser. While that group is already Republican it kept their enthusiasm high and probably helped him survive access Hollywood. Now that he is the divine god king and the true son to these people he does not need that anymore.
I suspect that Pence *did* shore up Trump in a place where he was weak - evangelicals. He's a pretty darn godless man from their perspective -- serial adulterer, multiple divorcee, liar, and cheater. The "Access Hollywood" video hurt him pretty badly as well among that demographic -- I forget if that was before or after. Pence was someone they believed in, and it shored up that weakness. Now, he feels he has them securely he doesn't feel the need to -- he might be right, or that may be another demographic that he's losing his hold over, who can say?
Because that would be admitting to himself and others that he isn’t perfect. By selecting a clone, he sends the message that he’s perfect and infallible.

I can't be the only one who originally knows JD Vance from his campaign from when he was running for the Senate. It starts with him looking in the camera and saying "Are you a racist? Do you hate Mexicans?" Then he says his mom almost died from fentanyl that came across the border.
VP pick quality aside, the timing of this announcement is a really big misstep in my opinion. Purely from a PR perspective, not milking a sympathy situation and throwing out a super easy target for everyone to still be able to criticize Trump while being able to say they are giving him space, just made Vance national cannon fodder. Now 40% of the headlines are just Vance, less than 4 days after an assassination attempt on a presidential nominee that missed by an inch.
