@RootsandRefugefarm Try Cherokee Tan pumpkin, I was amazed at how pest resistant and prolific, 6 hrs of morning/early afternoon sun. Long term storage is over 1 yr, even does well in less than ideal soil.

I dehydrated nasturtium and made the most delicious seasoning that tastes amazing on things like eggs, potatoes and fish! It’s so prolific and I’m happy to find another use for them.

@@ssgundes1 The leaves and the flowers, though at the end of the season when I couldn’t let the plants go to waste, I had let most of the flowers go to save all the seeds. The leaves are practically waterproof, easy to clean and I made some with dehydrated garlic. I used that product to make compound butter!

@@heidimobley4897 her garden tomatoes were the only reason I knew I didn’t actually hate tomatoes. I remember cutting them up and making blts with her for an after school snack. The space has been neglected so it’s going to be a lot of work

Lmao!!! I purchased some Mongolian Huge Sunflower seeds from bakerscreek this season...for that reason alone lol the darn flower head is 3 of a normal seeded sunflower...let them look! 😄

I needed this. Just had my dad's memorial service today and found out 2 days ago my mom has lung cancer. 😭 They gave us seed packets with forget me nots. I can't wait to grow in honor of my Father.

For squash this year I’m going to plant buckwheat around it. I’ve heard from Laura at garden answer that her grandpa plants those together and says the buckwheat attracts parasitic wasps which eat the devil - I mean squash bugs. :) Just thought I’d share in case you haven’t tried that. :)

@@tammysummerfield183 Fedco Seeds is one of my favorites -- affordable and very transparent about their seed sources. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is relatively more expensive but has some really great, hard-to-find varieties. MIgardener is a great source for those with smaller gardens as they sell smaller seed packs for $2 each. Good luck with your garden! 🌻

When I bought my house I made friends with my neighbor. He was 85. His garden was immaculate. He taught me so much. I’ll never forget walking over and seeing him sleeping in his chair in his garden. He’d say just watching life! His wife had also taught me a lot of flower gardening. We’d spend at least 2 or 3 nights over there playing dominoes! Great memories!

My favorite way to eat eggplant is baba ganoush. It freezes great too, just strain before you freeze and after you thaw. This is especially good for people who aren't a huge fan of the texture of eggplant. Roast eggplant until soft. Then, blend it in a blender with tahini, garlic, lemon juice, cumin (or other spices), parsley (or other herbs), olive oil, salt. Great on bread, pita, veggies, meat, whatever.

Largely due to you and your sharing your love of fun varieties and your "seeds want to grow" philosophy, I grew things from seed last year! I had NO idea what I was doing. I grew Dragon Tongue Bush Beans, Burgundy Okra, North Georgia Candy Roaster Squash, Queen Lime Red Zinnias, burgundy Sunflowers, and Lettuce Leaf Basil. My success was pretty mixed, didn't get a whole lot of anything, but I got such JOY from looking at all those plants that I grew from tiny seeds. I kept bringing stuff to my husband and saying, "Look I GREW this." Oh and I let a parsley plant I grew from a start go to seed and now I have all these little parsley volunteers that make me so happy.

The best Garden year I have ever had, I housed my guinea fowl in my garden. Unlike my chickens and ducks the guineas never harmed any of my plants.They kept my plants free of bugs( no squash bugs) and helped keep weeds down.

My neighbor has had the opposite experience. Her new guineas completely destroyed her garden last year. This year she put out some seedlings and within the 5-10min she left them unprotected to grab a cup of coffee her guineas ate them all! They're also so noisy she's really been considering finding them a new home. Good to know there's some one who's having such a different experience with them though

Last year my borage stuck it out through the whole winter and fed my resident hummingbirds. It was such a joy to look out of a snowy morning and see the hummingbirds getting a sweet meal. This year they got buried under 4 ft of snow and didn't make it through, but it reseed easily and I expect it will be back in several places in the next couple months.

We live in North Alabama (8A) and squash bugs are wicked here too. Year before last I nearly went insane trying to defeat them, but they won out. Yellow squash is one of my absolute favorites, so I was absolutely determined to figure it out. So last year, we dedicated an entire 3'x3' bed to yellow squash and did something that looked super crazy (and the neighbors thought we were nuts), but it worked! It was amazing! I sewed a bunch of tulle fabric to a tarp in triangles, added dowels as poles and tied them at the top so that it looked like a teepee. We planted the tent and put fresh clean dirt inside on top of the tarp part, planted our starts (from indoors), tied it all up and strapped the poles together sealing that bad boy off. We didn't touch it again (except to water every now and again, because we got a load of rain last year) until it was time to harvest the most wonderful yellow squashes I have ever tasted. It is worth the funny looks to try to make a "princess teepee" just for the squash!

1. The teepees stood about 7 feet tall. 2. Yes, hand pollination was the only way this was ever going to work. 3. No, we unfortunately don't blog and there are no pictures of it, because we weren't sure it was going to work. We may post pics on Reddit this year when we do it again, I'm sure.

@@SAnneD-dp8el Yes, I did. It only took us (me and my 7 year old) about an hour to pollinate all three plants. Well, well worth it. Those squash were so squash-y and not bland like store squash at all. Store squash tastes like disappointment and tainted water in comparison.

I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one that gets frustrated in the garden when things don’t grow as you supposed. The heat, the insect ect. But - you are right you are always pulled back out there to enjoy it anyway all over again. I have added many sitting areas based on your statement of having a chair out there to just enjoy. I have swings, chairs and hammocks all over my garden. That way there is always a place in the shade to which I can retreat with a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea.

@@bethheerten1132 I’m also adding more sitting areas in the garden. I’m even looking for a very short stool to keep under my very dwarf, very loaded Meyer Lemon tree. It’s a pain to try to reach down under the limbs and get thorn poked so I have to kneel. Your comment gave me the idea. I pick lemons every other day. My porch swing (in the garden) and a tiny bistro table and chair near the raised beds is perfect for seed planting, potting or a cuppa in the early Summer mornings.🌱

My husband's grandfather is almost 100 years young and he is still an avid gardener and rancher. His little tip that he now has me doing when it comes to squash bugs...shopvac them. It is absolutely hilarious to see this man out in his garden vacuuming bugs off his plants...but it freaking works! He has spotless squash and fruits. He vacuums them and then sprays bug killer into the vacuum. That's what he considers organic gardening. I love this man and I will be sad when I have to vacuum my garden without him and his wonderful techniques.

For eggplant: I dehydrated slices and substituted those in lasagna and it worked well, the best thing for our house has been to bread coins and freeze them (like you mentioned you do with okra). Pop em in the air fryer, crack open a jar of homemade sauce for dipping, & snack away!

if you blanch them before you freeze them they do pretty well, I dehydrate them as well and add them pretty much everything. We are big Eggplant people.

My mom would always bread eggplant if we were having breaded pork chops since we would usually split a pork chop, the eggplant added some bulk to stretch out the meal inexpensively.

I grew eggplant for the first time last year and had a bumper crop. I made "Roasted eggplant and pepper puttanesca sauce" from the all new ball book of canning. It is a water bath canning recipe. I only made one batch and can't wait to make lots more this year. Delicious.

I feel like we are completely opposite gardeners- I only grow flowers! I don't grow any fruits or vegetables, and I'm totally happy that way. I have nearly 100 types of flowers that I will be growing this year and I can't wait to get started. Just like you have tons of varieties of tomatoes you love to grow, I am very rapidly turning into the pansy/viola lady! Even though we don't grow many of the same things, I'm glad to see someone else who has such a passion for growing a garden. Different things feed different souls :)

Peppermint keeps mice away, that is why pioneers grew it around their homes, planting them in buckets in ground keeps them from spreading , just don't them go to seed 👍👍

Regarding the squash bugs, I saw one lady wrapped stretchy athletic tape around the lower stems of her squash plants. Because it was stretchy, it expanded as the plant grew--at least that was the idea. Don't know if it really works, but stretchy athletic tape is cheap so it might be worth a test

Preserving eggplant: slice salt drain on towels to remove bitterness. Or plant a white eggplant and just slice because it doesn't have the bitterness in the skin that the dark eggplants have. Freeze on sheet trays in a single layer. I put them in double layers of Ziploc freezer bags or silicone bags and keep in the freezer for months. They're ready to cook right from the freezer roasted on a sheet pan right from frozen. I do the same thing with a zucchini and red peppers and tomato slices, and then make sheet pan ratatouille straight from the freezer. You can also slice them really thin on a mandolin and freeze them in stacks with parchment in between them, and then use in moussaka or lasagna.

I live in new Mexico. I have the same problem with squash bugs, But one of my friend mom had grow squash and there where no squash bugs. I ask how there is no squash bugs on your plant. She told me she grow them after the 4th of July and it does the trick. So we shall see this year crossing fingers. Thought I should share. Love your videos.

In New Jersey, the local university agriculture outreach says a second planting after beginning of July will probably not be infested with squash vine borer since there's usually only 1 generation unless weather conditions are favorable for them

Oh boy! I wish I could put photos in here! I told hubby when he went to the dollar tree to look for garden stuff. Well, he came home with 2 to 5 of EACH seed packet they had!! He bought 3 stacking things so I can plant 9 plants! AND 8 planter trolleys AND 4 bags of indoor/outdoor potting soil ÀND a tomato plant seed in a container that you just put in soil. ÀND he got a lot of other good stuff. He is SOOO happy with himself and so am i!

Put coffee grinds around the plant. It confuses the bugs. I also take a toilet paper holder and split it and put around the stem at the ground to get the squash bugs to do no harm

I feel like that every year when the last fresh tomato is sitting on the counter. I almost don't want to cut it because no more until next summer. I bought some tomatoes for a salad and when we sat down and took our first bite I was so sad. I told my husband, "This just tastes like disappointment. "

The best volunteer I have come up in my garden is a red current bush planted by a bird 3 years ago. That was a true blessing. It makes me smile every time I pass it and every time I am able to harvest and enjoy the free delicious food.

Thanks Jess for taking so much time to help us. In regards to squash in the heat and humidity, I have staked them the last three years. You just keep securing them to the stake as they grow. It makes it easy to prune them for airflow and harvesting. When you get to the top of your stake you just release the vine from the stake and start attaching the new growth at the bottom again. I have done this in Oklahoma and Florida. Also I use about 20 drops of peppermint oil in a spray bottle of water for the squash bugs. When you prune or harvest the plant releases a pheromone that’s like a dinner bell for the bugs. The peppermint hides the Oder. Hope you’ll try it good luck.

A neighbor stopped by while we were working in the garden. I asked hubby to pick 2 nasturtium blossoms. I handed one to neighbor. She said "what am I supposed to do w/ this?" In reply, I stuck mine in my mouth. She was surprised but did the same. We had a good laugh about that. She didn't know they were edible but she does now.

I got real serious when we bought an empty lot next to our house and turned the whole thing into a garden. It’s been 4 years last year and I did very well. First 3 years not so much. This is Year 5 so maybe the fruit trees produce???

My in-laws who live really close by had HORRIBLE squash bug issues such that they don't even bother growing squash anymore. We moved onto a piece of bare land and built a house... the 1st year I had GLORIOUS squashes of all kinds and thought, "wow, there aren't any squash bugs here!" but the 2nd year they decimated my crop. So... since you're on new ground you may have a great squash year this year until the little squash bugs get the word out that Roots and Refuge grows all the food :). (TL:DR -- plant all the squashes this year before the squash bugs know you're there!).

Plant your pumpkins and winter squash. Since the food hasn’t been there you might not have a big problem this year Each year they get worse. Squash bugs are horrid here in western Pa too

Thanks for sharing. It's so interesting hearing you talk about "noodle beans". My family is from Guyana and we eat bora, which is called yard beans/Asian long beans because it's ready when it's a yard in length. They look very similar but one is green and the other red. I'll going to try this variety.

I sliced and dehydrated eggplant this year. It was absolutely exceptional reconstituted in a vegetable coconut curry. It was creamy! I love fresh eggplant lots of ways but I think this is actually my favorite!

I unexpectedly had a great egg plant harvest last year. So, I tried them in a lasagna. It was unbelievable! We used to buy $13.00 lasagna in a box. They are nice to throw into the oven on a single digit winter day. This year we did the same but, with lasagna from our garden. They are stored in foil loaf pans, wrapped in tin foil, and then put into zip lock bags.

Jade green bush beans, have just wowed me!!! I have grown them for 2 years now and they are SO prolific and delicious, tender, no strings, full of flavor and did I say PROLIFIC!!! I counted 69 beans on 1 plant when picking in 2023!!! Even canned they keep a full delicious flavor!!

My hubby and I are actually working on garden planning today 🤩. We have SO MANY seeds and a finite amount of space to grow so we are being very picky about bed space and planning on using tons of grow bags stationed around the beds to expand what we are able to grow. Jess, I had a huge fight with Cucumber Beetles and Squash Bugs. I did the same round of battles with DE powder, hand picked them off.... "I could not win. And then I read somewhere that they hate the smell of garlic and onions. So I thought to myself, well why not just save the onion peels and the ends of onions from cooking and scatter them all over the garden beds. So I did I even juiced down some onions and garlic sprayed lightly the soil and left the peels scattered. I not only saw improvement, but only found one bug. And even it was not willing to stay. It went towards the peels and flew off. I think it is a for sure secret weapon I stumbled on. Give it a go!! And yes, I ended up with Zucchini, Yellow Summer Squash, Pumpkins and also some amazing Buttercup Squash. This year...I am going to put lots of onions out from the start. Let me know if it helps you too.

Best way I ever ate eggplant was at a seafood restaurant…breaded and fried with crawfish ettoufee layered like a cake. You can serve over salad greens or organic rice. Maybe sides of potato salad with plenty of parsley or fried okra? 😉

Eggplant recipes: Refrigerator pickles: thin eggplants- boiled and split longitudinal, water, vinegar, garlic, cumin, salt, pepper. Stuffed eggplants: also long eggplants but slightly thicker than pickling eggplants, rice, herbs, tomatoes, ground beef optional. Eggplant casserole: fried or baked sliced round eggplant, peeling optional. Layered with garlicky tomato sauce (with a dash of vinegar), and precooked ground beef then baked, optional bashamel on top.

I found seeds packets that my mom and I bought back in 1999. Don't know if they will germinate but going to try. I also like volunteer plants they can be a different color that you never thought would fit but makes the garden prettier.

A simple way I have found to preserve eggplant. Peel it, blanch it, place on parchment covered cookie sheet in a single layer and freeze. Store in a Ziploc bag. Take out as much as you need when you need it. The main way I use this is in soups and it makes a fantastic eggplant lasagna.

For eggplant/ aubergine slice them put in the oven with olive oil salt pepper and marjaram until cooked then flash freeze in the freezer. Then in the winter you can get slices out and have grilled aubergine in the winter. Cooking it and flash freezing means it doesn’t go to mush when defrosted. It’s great to throw in pasta sauce as well. I do grilled aubergines in jars with oil garlic salt and pepper too.

You should try the Pantano Romanesco from Baker Creek. I started growing these about 8 years ago and have made my seed list every year since! Also try planting some moon flower seeds out by by your swing. You will love watching these dinner plate sized flowers open up at sunset!

Jess, moonflowers are in the morning glory family, but the opposite, but dont spread at all. In fact, I have to re sead them every year. They open when the sun sets and close at sunrise. They are beautiful! If you cant find seeds for them I would be happy to mail you some!

I planted a Rampacante squash in a 6 inch pot, set it on my raised bed then forgot about it. This is in N FL..aka Squash Bug Central! That thing grew all around my entire half acre fenced veggie garden.. up trellises, rooted itself along fences, up over into the chicken run, down into the rose garden. Tried to take over my Livestock Trailer..Grew tons of squash too. Squash bugs didnt bother it. The only other squash type plant the squash bugs don't attack here, is the Seminole Pumkins, which will grow up into the trees.

yup! we did the same in CT, planted 4 seeds, two on each side of an 8 ft tall cattle panel arch....thought there would be enough space.....oh no it went over the trellis, then over the next one and the next one and down 3 16 ft raised bed boxes. We ate a ton, but let a bunch go BIG, we stored them for over a year and most were still good inside.

I've heard if you give your squash a good head start in starter pots and allow them to get fairly big before planting them out that it can help with getting a harvest. Also cut the bottom sets of leaves off and wrap the stem with strips of aluminum foil. it will help with the stem borers which are usually the main killers. The stink bug looking beetles can kill them if no intervention at all but the borers do the real damage. Also keep in mind that the squash bug is at its worst in June so try to plant accordingly. Either way earlier with frost protection or in July with started plants.

I cook eggplant, then mash it with butter, diced onions, breadcrumbs and herbs and freeze bags of it. To use it, put down a layer of sliced tomatoes, spread with the unfrozen eggplant mixture, top with another layer of sliced tomatoes, cover with cheddar & parmesan cheese and bake. ❤️
