I bought the HDP50 compact for my daughter. I agreed with your comments in your first vid that it looked and loaded a bit odd. It does, however, fit my daughter's hand better than the full-size HDP50 that I carry. After this simple mod and the RIT dye, I feel comfortable in providing the HDP50 Compact to my daughter as one more item in her personal defense arsenal. I agree 100% that "These Umarex launchers are freakin awesome." Love you, Jon! Your mad genius is helping U.S. and many others stay safe!

Don't usually watch RU-vid reviews, but yours are very good. You do a real in depth review.

Using Rit Dye I dyed all my Umarex orange bits (2 x Compact and 2 X HDP 50). Worked outstanding. In all black the Compact looks far less Toys-R-Us (or "Blade Runner" if you prefer) and HDP 50 looks like the real deal.* ____________________ To Rit dye the orange bits I followed the directions on the Rit label FOR DYING NYLON (which only means you add soap and vinegar to the water). In an old beat up large metal pot set on the stove top (alternative: 4" to 5" deep metal roasting pan): Dye concoction = 4 quarts water; 2 bottles black Rit Dye (or 4 pkgs); 1 Tbs dish soap (e.g., Dawn); 1 cup vinegar. Heat mixture on stove burner set to low, stirring every few min so everything mixes. (If you have a thermometer heat mixture to 150 degrees, not more than 180 degrees.) __________________________________ Process: WEAR GLOVES and using metal tongs I soaked each orange bit in the dye mixture for about 30 minutes. During the process I stirred the mixture every few minutes and shifted the orange bits too. You can remove each bit during the dying to see the progress (be patient at the 15 min. mark, don't freak out. Full dying takes 30 mins). After 30 minutes I looked at each bit in all angles to confirm the bit was now a deep black color. Make sure to check the nooks and crannies. I drip-dried each bit by suspending each over the pot. After 15 minutes I rinsed each bit with cold water. During the rinse I lightly brushed the bit with a soft brush. If the dye starts coming off you did something wrong! I then placed the bits on to a puppy pee pad to 100% dry. Using a dry paper towel I buffed each bit and pausing every minute to admire my work. WARNING: DO NOT BUFF WITH ANY OF THE WIFE'S KITCHEN OR BATH TOWELS! Paper towels work fine. End result: I could not detect the orange bits had been dyed. Looks like factory! ____________________ *WARNING: Check the laws in your locale! Here in the U.S. I do NOT know the laws of each state. Here in California the "Airsoft law" requiring orange tips and bits on any gun-looking device applies only to such products marketed or sold to, or possessed by minors, which is typically Air Soft guns. So why do Umarex products in the U.S. contain orange bits, yet the HDP 50 sold in Europe is all black? Because it is easier, less costly, causes less headaches, and reduces liability to sell all real-gun-looking products that will be "automatically compliant" in states that have an orange tip law; that is, rather than trying to sell different-colored markers according to each state's laws (and leave the dying up to the purchaser). Bottom Line: Dye responsibly! (side note: I always wanted to say something corny on RU-vid).

I bought mine pre modded wish I had seen this video first. I spent $165 for the pre modded version. Modded my sons for $3.10 worth of dye and 20 minutes. The Compact is now my EDC because the HDP 50 is larger. How so: The Compact has a shorter slide/barrel and grip (due to the difference between the 12 gm vs. 8 gm Co2 cartridge, the chamber for the Compact is shorter). When I have my Compact in a holster I don't even realize I am wearing it. Note: The Compact or other Umarex markers are for what I call emergency self-defense. In those situations you are going to be in close quarters (the perp being 5' to 15' max from you; think the burglar is near the kitchen window, you are standing in the room adjacent to it). The raison d'être of this marker: it is better than nothing; the sight of it deters*; and four LOUD well-placed shots with the right ammo will terminate the situation, WITH PREJUDICE. For effective self-defense ammo is important. While you can shoot 50 cal. ball bearings, IMO those are too heavy to get max velocity and hitting power from a valve-removed Compact. After one year now I have many choices: my aluminum rounds; steel powder or small ball bearing encased in hardened PVC; or my favorite: what the Amazon seller calls dense "Rubber-Steel Balls." Any of these choices give you max velocity, and the hardest hitting round. Bonus tip: The pliers used to remove the brass valve block/charge indicator cap are generically called "snap ring pliers." IMO you should invest in a set that you will keep around for life. Right now the "WorkPro" set of four pliers is costing a mere $22 on Amazon. A sound purchase since from time to time you may have to deal with snap rings. Bonus Tip: Both Amazon and eBay have holsters available, designed and formed specifically for the Compact. *What everyone is doing is breaking out the Rit Dye to covert ugly orange to beautiful black. (Search RU-vid for the many how-to videos on color changing orange plastic.) You want the color change because an orange marker will emboldened perps, in contrast a black marker will instill fear.

thank you for showing this mod man this is the best and fastest easiet mod ive seen and ive been doing this for over 15yrs, but i do wonder and wished ya would have did a pepper ball test with it to see if it will explode in the barrel.

One big thing I'd add to the list of "Learn your weapon, Know your weapon and Practice firing your weapon" is Know your local laws when it comes to your weapon as they can vary widely from City to City. With everyone wanting to max the fire power of these things, you need to really know what the laws are pertaining to these launchers because the Joules they put out when at "Manufacturing limits" may be within legal for the state or local municipalities, the "Maxed out" levels could very well be above those limits and now be considered a lethal weapon or an illegal weapon after the modifications by the State or the City. This is something I really don't see discussed much by the modders.

Great video sir and alway fun to modify things. As far as storing these with ammo. Do you find they jam up after sitting for a while? balls deform ? I would think the T4e revolver would not have those issues but I could be wrong. Really like the compact and its bigger brother the HDR 50 and the T4e Revolver. Going to buy one but just not sure on what would be the best home defender loaded up and on stand by 24/7 lol lol Thanks for the help!

Left one in the glove box and it popped apart and shot the co2 canister and the piece it goes in out I hope I can fix it.

The 11 joule version I have here does not have that plastic valve block and the air chamber looks empty. Is it the 7 joule version you modded here? If so, there's no CO2 restrictor in the cartridge chamber right? Would the 11 joule version of the Compact only need the CO2 restrictor removed then to get it identical to your modifications?

In Europe in most countries the 11 Joule version is sold (except Germany: 7.5 Joule). I understand that you upgraded the 7.5 Joule version. Can the 11 Joule version be upgraded the same way or should I buy the German one?

Jon how hard is the regular HDP 50 easy to conceal carry with just a t-shirt on ? I wish the compact had at least a couple more rounds but if you can conceal it much easier then I suppose I may have to go with that. And obviously there isn’t any room for a laser either. Also is there a holster that the compact would fit in for conceal carry ?

That's awesome and simple. Have you tried drilling out the hole yet? Because in "air gunning" there's also something called "too much air" in respect to the length of the barrel (and back pressure). The projectile can only accelerate as long as it's in the barrel meaning that you often can get the same results/speeds by increasing the air ever so slightly. In this case, drilling out the hole the valve block just a litte bit. I guess the hole directs the air better and maybe saves your o-rings as well. What's your opinion? One last question, how are the pepper balls holding up after this mod considering the acceleration is significantly higher? One last thing I just don't get . . . . what's with the w*ke g*nder flu*id colors on these things. I saw Byrna even has a yellow and pink/purple version "to attrackt more women". Really? 75 to 90 of sexual assults are done by men, how will they react if a woman draws a pink or orange launcher? It pisses the attacker off, making him even more determined to engage. Would you want your daughter or wife carrying a launcher that will worsen the situation instead of defusing it? In my opinion the best launcher is the launcher that you never have to use. If Byrna and Umarex is all about self defence, then why bring colors to market that will escalate the situation? When you draw a black or sand color Umarex or Byrna during a home invasion (maybe in low light) 95% of the perpetrators will leave. The moment you draw a launcher that looks like a kids toy, is the moment you make SURE you have to take it to the next step and use it.

Is the Umarex HDP pepper you modified a 43 cal? I couldn't find it on Amazon. The HDP 50 by P2P is listed at $113. What is your price for the non modified and modified. I don't own a launcher and have been waiting on the small BYRNA PE for conceal carry. I do like its' loading and co2 capabilities over the Umarex. I am considering the HDP pepper launcher mainly due to its size. Wonder how size compares between the two.
