I always love the way this movie looks. It’s a unique style that seems to be exclusive to this film. It is trying to be a Disney or Bluth film story and character wise, but the style of the animation, colors, and lighting is not like any other animated film from the 90’s.
I dont mean to argue or make any negative light but i will say this. Is it ever really TRYING to be either of those movies tho? I think ppl get a bit over their assumptions when it comes to styles of animation n shit....like....guys...its a movie about dinosaurs comin back to new york city! WHOA! COULDA YOU IMAGINE?! whereas land before time was all LIFE SUCKS! YOUR MOM DIES WHEN YER 2YRS OF AGE FIND YOUR WAY TO YOUR GRANDPARENTS! HERES A FUCKIN MAPLE LEAF! NOW GIT GOIN AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE CEPT FOR CERA. SHES A DICK. And i think during the 90s was when dinosaurs were THE BEES KNEES. Everyone wanted to tell a story about em in some way or another. Trying to use the same characters? I would have to disagree...aside from there being dinosaurs i dont see how WERE BACK is trying to be a carbon copy of anything than just a fun idea. A movie to shut your brain off too. Yknow? But thats just of course my opinion. 🦕🦖🐊🦈
the start of the movie reminded me of the land before time, but i don’t remember what that came out edit: just got to the bit where they mentioned land before time
@@WonkyClownRibsThe Land Before Time was 1988, this was 1993. So yeah, I'm sure the resemblance was intentional. This was the second film done by Amblimation, Steven Spielberg's short-lived animation studio at Universal. Their first was An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. So looking like Don Bluth was something they absolutely knew how to do 😆
@@jbwarner8626 Do you know they were gonna make a 2D movie of Cats, based on the Broadway musical and the book “Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats” (which the musical is based on)? Looking at the production art for “Cats” makes me wish it happened; as it shares the same artstyle of cats as they did with “Fievel Goes West”.
Gotta watch Pagemaster next. I grew up in NY, and on rainy days when wd couldn't go out during recess, they'd play a movie in the auditorium, most often The Pagemaster, A Goofy Movie, or Matilda.
I loved dinosaurs as a kid and still love them, but this movie used to scare me specifically because of what the villain did it was just uniquely terrifying to me for some reason
Those reverb farts legit got me doubled over wheezing and uncontrollably laughing. I love me a good fart reverb, I don't care if it's childish. Thank you Saber, for the best laugh I had all week.
Here's a crazy thought: What if Captain Neweyes started gathered up all of the dinosaurs, starting with Rex and his friends, but this time in order to save them. To do that, he created an oasis for them that would later be known as the Great Valley seen in the Land Before Time.
It's kinda weird, but herbivorous animals like hippo, camel, tortoise, deer, chicken, rabbit, etc, will sometimes snack on meat if the opportunity is there (warming: looking it up is kinda cursed😵💫😵)
@@albatross4920Also there’s this really interesting video on ceratopsians (the dinosaur family that includes triceratops) potentially being omnivorous ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GCv1biupT14.htmlsi=C9doqFUKwn-YUSyp
Gonna be honest, Stubbs' ending monologue is amazing. It's always my favorite part. But then it's followed by the crow scene and that always terrified me as a kid.
Dude this was such a nostalgia trip, I got chills. I absolutely loved dinosaurs when I was younger, and I'm glad that this movie was indeed not a fever dream, but a real film
@@digijade5245 based on his design I thought Dweeb was supposed to be a parasaurolophus. I really hope Hollywood will consider doing another movie base on this story because we really don't have many dinosaur content there was a recent 65 but I heard that did not do well in the box office this could be a perfect opportunity to make another we're back movie considering there were other dinosaurs from the book that didn't make it until this film
@@animezilla4486 yes, a parasaurolophus is a hadrosaur, and I didn't realize Were Back was based off of a book series. But I really do hope Hollywood makes more dinosaur media. 65 had an interesting concept, but yeah I heard it did horribly. Hopefully more dinosaur media will be in the works now that Jurassic World seems to be over, and perhaps hopefully a Were Back sequel or remake, hopefully with a more fleshed out plot, and characters with distinct personalities
Fun fact: there was a deleted scene where Screw eyes explains to the dinosaurs how he lost his eye. As a kid he took a nap under a tree when a berry fell near his eye and than a crow swoops in after the berry and takes his eye instead. He develops a fear of crows and eventually becomes insane and obsessed with conquering his fear and exploiting other peoples fears. That’s why he surrounds himself with crows and has a circus centered around scaring people. A good chunk of animation and pre-voice work were done. A shame they took it out.
I had to pause the video after the bit at 18:31 because I was laughing so hard that there were tears in my eyes and I couldn't breathe, holy shit. It's only compounded by Screweyes being played by the same guy who voiced King Triton and I just. I'm dying here man. Help.
I don't think many folks point this out, but one thing I still love about this film is how beautiful it is art and color wise. The inside of the ship is so warm and calming, the circus is appropriately nightmarish with it's toxic greens and deep hues, and the parade scene just captures the vivid color against the monochrome city. This movie is seriously underappreciated as a visual feast, with or without it's bonkers plot lol
I actually love this movie even if people think it's dumb. I adored just how the dinos just accepted their newfound humanity, the wishes were so damn special, the demon circus was something I'd absolutely want to attend as a weird adult. No idea why the crows devoured screweyes. The story is solid for most of the way and I felt a real connection with the kids, being a neglected child myself who just wanted to run away and be happy. There's a lot of really good moving parts to the story.
We're Back! and Kiki's Delivery Service are the 2 movies I have my earliest childhood memory of having ever seen. They both mean soooo much to me. Kiki gets plenty of love but I feel this movie gets bashed so much and that makes me sad. I still love this movie a lot!!! It brings me joy!!
I used to sing along to ALL the songs and I remember watching it 5 times in a row when I was sick, it’s a really fun movie and it brings me joy as a dinosaur ( and other prehistoric creatures) nerd :)
If there’s one thing I’ll agree with Watchmojo, this put this film on their list for “great animated films that don’t deserve a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes”
I haven't seen this movie sinse Doug Walker reviewed it. I found it amusing that he didn't get the point. The movie's message is clearly telling kids running away from home is dangerous, and shows them not to trust strangers.
The scene where the evil professor is describing how he keeps crows around him in his cave because he wants to conquer his fear of them made me think of batman lmao 😂😂 (and the following comment by the dinosaur lol)
I loved this movie as a kid. It was always in my VHS rotation. I was surprised to learn what a flop it was when I was older. Also, Kenneth Mars had range, damn.
Legit, I love this movie. I seriously think if it just had an extra half hour or so to flesh out the characters a bit it wouldn't be as memed on, but it's such a unique experience, for better or worse
I unironically still kinda love this movie. I can see how flawed it is, but it is still something I'll put on if I'm unwell or feeling low. It's just so unabashedly corny
Man, this movie brings back memories. I haven't thought about it for who knows how long, but it is nice to know that I wasn't the only one who enjoyed it.
One thing I love about this film is that it’s as easy to love and appreciate as it is to rip into and make fun of. I think most people get that vibe from this movie. Especially saber
What a nostalgic trip! We're Back! is definitely one of those films you don't remember the plot, but the character designs most. Definitely a film for the late 90s and early 2000s kids to remember. I love this movie as a kid! 🥰
Well, Saber, you aren't alone as I loved this film as a kid! It's a pity that it bombed & some consider it a bad film, but I think it was judged way to harshly & cause everyone tried to compare it to other films like Land Before Time & Disney! Heck, some even tried to compare it to Jurassic Park, which I personally feel was wrong as its an animated film! Sure, it's not anything mind-blowing, but to me, it's a solid film for kids & I always did like the song, Roll Back The Rock!
this used to be my favorite movie when i was little. i used to watch it all the time when i got sick and had to stay home from school. definitely got more obscure as i grew up
There's a deleted scene that makes Screweyes a much more interesting character and explains why he's missing an eye, why he's obsessed with scaring people, and why he keeps the crows around despite the fact that he's clearly scared of them. It also kinda frames the scene at the end with the crows in possibly a more abstract light - not that they literally took him away, but that once he lost his circus, he was so overwhelmed by his fears and that he went off into obscurity and was never seen again. Possibly. This movie's fuckin' weird.
The funny thing about the contract the kids signed is that in many cases, minors can't be held to the terms of a contract until they reach the age of majority. In other words, a minor has the right to opt out of a contract, even if the other party is an adult and is bound by the terms. Therefore, from the minor's perspective, a contract in most instances is a good faith agreement but not a legally enforceable one, so yeah, ScrewEyes didn't have a legal leg to stand on, not that the kids or Dinosaurs were legal savvy enough to know that its not really a plot hole as the kids & Dinosaurs are likely ignorant of contract law! Though given how the blood turns into a signature, you could argue it is some kind of magical contract. Thus, there might be consequences for breaking it, especially since it was literally signed in blood!
I remember watching this movie so much when it would appear on TV for the Thanksgiving holiday, alongside the Land Before Time movie (and most of it's sequels). It may sound odd, but it had made my kid brain associate dinosaurs with the holiday/winter season lol. ^^ And just realized that Walter Cronkite and Julia Child was in this movie! Grew up with them and didn't even realize it!
In Finland, this Spielperg film is known as Dinosaurukset New Yorkissa - Dinosaurs in New York. When I learned that the name of the movie is completely different in English, I was surprised because I originally thought it was the same as the English part of the Finnish name of the movie.
I had this movie on VHS with the Finnish dub when I was a kid. After many, many years I came across it on RU-vid just yesterday. Talk about a blast from the past. It was one of my favorite movies back then, and it actually still is. I now understand certain aspects of it so much better. Back when I used to watch it, it was mostly just a fun dinosaur movie with a really catchy song. I'm so happy that people are still talking about it because it should never be forgotten.
Despite the issues with the movie, I still like We're Back. It is such a weird movie, bazar script, and strange concept. I can't think of anything like it.
I remember watching this as a kid even though I was born in 2003 My parents raised me of of these kind of movies from the 80s 90s and 2000s especially Disney, Warner Brothers, and Universal Studios on the light of their era!
I couldn't praise the emotions in this movie enough as a kid and as a adult.❤Amblimation is peak in their talented animators 🎥 Those "I wish I had a friend" "let no bad happen!" And seeing seeing the girl in the photo with her family at the end really hit the heartstrings ❤
Saber, your first grade self had good taste. uwu No, but really, I legitimately enjoyed this film as a kid as well. I feel your need of nostalgia here. ;w; We're Back may not be the best movie out there, but damn do I love that it is a weird romp AND ROLL BACK THE ROCK IS A GREAT SONG. Though, I do agree with Rishi on wishing the film would have leaned a little more into the darker aspects. Even as a kid, I found that angle enormously more interesting than the rest of the film. I also haven't seen this film in ages, but definitely do see the strangeness with the digital aspects of the animation. The shift to digital colouring for animation (or even adding 3D elements) at this time was indeed rougher for some studios than others, and it is a little jarring to see it today for sure. We've come a long way on that.
Yeah this one came out in my early teens I still got the original VHS. It's a good movie. There are scenes that occasionally pop up in my mind throughout the year. That's how you know you have a classic if it's relatible over the course of several decades °~•.☆.•~°
I love this movie so much, I have a copy in what I call my nostalgia collection. It’s also why I love hall of the mountain king and associate with evil circuses
This is one of my favorite movies! I saw it I think earlier than it initially released (I think it may have been one of those test screenings when it was finished, there's a couple scenes I swear aren't on the VHS version I had as a kid, I was always kinda confused about the missing sections. It wasn't til I was an adult that I realized it was probably a test version!

So I was watching something..don't remember what now... saw this and dropped everything to watch it. This movie wasn't exactly one of my favorites but I LOVE the villain, and the good scientist now that I think about it.
*The following is the opinion of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!* [EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] "So nice to see the crows in this be depicted as saving the day as that crow pressed the button that freed Rex from ScrewEyes control! Also, the flock taking down ScrewEyes at the end was awesome & makes perfect sense as us modern birds are avian dinosaurs, so the crows were just helping out their non-avian cousins (while Rex should have feathers, it was pretty common in the 90s to depict T-Rex & Raptors without them & we have to remember this film was made by Steven Spielberg's company Amblimation & did feature an Easter egf of a Jurassic Park movie poster as the film was released the same year as Jurassic Park)! Also boo for not listening to Little Ricard's cover of Roll Back the Rock, which plays during the credits!"
This movie was my childhood! I seriously remember watching this movie more then once as a kid. While it might not be the most greatest of animated movies and does has it shares of some flaws to here and there, but I still really enjoy and still like this movie despite it not being perfect. Love to see you guys do a live reaction to the Lackadaisy short coming tomorrow!
I also have a nostalgic soft spot for this movie. But even then, there's tons of room for improvement quality-wise. Still a better animated trip to Manhattan than "A Troll in Central Park," that's for sure.
Movies to consider watching (Some of these are niche so...) : - The Land Before Time (The original) - All Dogs Go To Heaven - An American Tail - The Rescuers (Down Under would be cool too!) - The Fearless Four - Rover Dangerfield - Millionaire Dogs
Funnily they do briefly look at Land Before Time in the last 3rd. Saber even has some funny freeze frame moments with Littlefoot's mom, like her angry face rushing at the Sharptooth
I used to watch this all the time as a toddler. Love dinosaurs to this day. Don't remember much apart from the cute versions of the dinos turn into scary version of the dinos. That's all i could remember XD
