We get real in this episode: real life vs RU-vid life, Evan’s hernia, how we define ourselves, why we’re putting time into our podcast/Twitch/other ventures when main videos might make more sense. Plus we play “would you rather” and go down some interesting/hilarious thought rabbit holes.

(Catching up on all of your podcasts) I watch your content not because of what you are making, but because of who is making it. Whether it's spin art, cat tape preferences, video games, or a full house renovation, it's the interaction between the two of you that is entertaining. Make the content YOU want to make, and the community will be there. Once you start trying to force it, the audience will notice it. All of the other RU-vidrs I watch, it's due to the creators and not the creations. I've seen plenty of channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers that I cannot stand due to the creator's personality. Either I'm just not a fan of their personality, or it's obvious that they are trying to be like someone else. I gravitate towards genuine creators (or those that do a great job of being genuine). Bobby Duke, Jimmy D, Bob K, Alec S, Paul J, Get Hands Dirty, and so many more great channels. Keep it real and people will keep coming.

I lucked into one of your RU-vid videos about a month ago and now I've been binge watching everything you 2 do. I love how you are always laughing with each other and encouraging towards one another. Don't change a thing! Your laughter, banter, inside jokes and the pure joy when something goes totally awesomely right are what keeps me smiling and wondering what you're going to do next. Not to mention, you make some amazing stuff! I'm soooo jealous of your workshop. Fingers crossed for you Evan.

I love would you rather, and i think the most fun part of it is overanalyzing each question and make sure you pick the real question, or live yourself into it so to speak. I hate it when people just plow through would you rather questions, that way they wont be as genuine answers, and they will not last for as long. Also enjoy these longer podcasts, keep it up!

What you guys were saying around 22:00 about hanging out is so true for me. I tell my dad about some of the videos you guys make and one time I slipped and said "My friends Evan and Katelyn in Texas". Part of that is just how positive an influence you guys are I think. For example, when I'm feeling really depressed, your videos can still make me smile. So even though we will probably never meet, I feel like you guys help me out and others like me, making the world a better place. And speaking of Marie Kondo, my favorite Twitter post by Elle Oh Hell Marie Kondo: Does this item spark joy? Me: No MK: Does this spark joy? Me: No, it doesn't *three hours later in an empty house* Me: Oh wait I have depression.

It's great to see you both taking a smart, proactive approach! Having that sort of preparation in place is invaluable when life throws you a curve ball. I caught one in the form of a traumatic brain injury at the peak of my career. Even though it up-ended my life in many ways, what got me through nine years of recovery has been the mental preparations I made throughout my life. You have a great support system and an endless supply of people here to support you in many ways as you heal. I hope your recovery is swift and revitalizing! No matter how it goes, we are very grateful for the chance to experience you both in whichever ways make you happy =D Good luck!

This comment comes way late but I'm just making my way through the podcasts now and I wanted to say Evan's theory of everything having a thing resonates with me a lot. My early 20's have mostly been plagued by a sense of loss and lacking and I think thats mostly because I lost a lot of the *things* that made me, me in that time. Now as I'm coming up on 25 I'm finally reconnecting to things, and passions and for the first time I feel like a whole person again.

I love the variety you have in your shows and honestly my brain sort of works in the same way and seems sort of scatterbrained to others but makes so much sense to me so the way this podcast went is perfect. I don't understand why anyone would give you a thumbs down or negative criticism. I feel like I'm a pretty happy person too though. On another note, I don't understand how you have time to respond to almost every comment! That alone is a serious endeavor. I wish more RU-vidrs did that especially. Keep up the good work but always take care of yourselves first!

Hi, Evan and Katelyn! Upon touching on the topic of disability in this podcast I think it is important that you both educate yourselves on the medical and social models of disability. I feel like what Katelyn said about not being able to swim plays into the stigmas the general population has about disability. It is especially important right now as RU-vid is planning to remove community captions, which are essential for members of the deaf or hearing impaired community to have accessibility to content. I would highly recommend you start following creators like Molly Burke and watch her video "Why I hate being called 'Differently Abled' " where she talks about the models of disability and educates people about disability as a blind woman. I would also recommend Rikki Poynter who is a hearing impaired creator and the channels Chronically Jaquie and The Raw Life who both deal with chronic illnesses which are often invisible illnesses. Chronically Jaquie is where I first became involved in the disability community on RU-vid and I think it is extremely important that we all educate ourselves and do our part in spreading awareness and advocating for those who do things differently.

It is incredibly hard to slow down once you get the ball rolling. Over the last few years I had been having some horrible lower back pain... Long story short my doctor found that I have been getting arthritis in the base of my spinal column. That was neat to find out at age 38. Over the last year I had to figure out how to keep making things, as I really enjoy that, without causing even more pain. Which led down the road of buying a small cnc, learning vectric software, learning all about feeds and speeds, downloading fusion and becoming so confused haha... I need to find a fusion 360 for dummies series. I can't change my back but I can change how I make things.
@EvanandKatelynPodcast

Ooh ouch man. That's awesome to hear that you found a way to keep on making things! i think your goal for where you land is pretty cool - it's like maker channels meet mike boyd or try guys. that variety of content will keep the channel fresh for both you and the viewers, and i think that you still have the freedom to return to similar kinds of projects and show how past experience helps and how your skills have improved.

Also it you can control fire you can fly. You can create a thermal (which is lighter) and use it to propel. I.e. Human torch. As a firefighter if I could control fire I could save more property by keeping it from spreading and dissipate the heat. Controlling water in that instance wouldn’t help you because there isn’t moisture in the air. I.e. frozone. Plus useless in a desert, little to no moisture there.

Evan, I'm only 2 and a half minutes into this podcast, but I had to stop to comment. Having a hernia honestly is not a big deal. Take it from someone who just had one fixed at the end of November. I am 33, and I had my hernia for a month shy of 12 years. You can do everything with a hernia that you did before without one. I had moments of discomfort a couple times a year, but I hiked and climbed mountains, lifted heavy things, worked very physically demanding jobs, and it had no ill effect on me. As long as it doesn't become strangulated you're fine. And once you have it long enough you'll never think about it. I guess I'm saying this to you because 2.5 minutes in it sounds like you're going to halt life to attend to your hernia. I'm not saying you shouldn't get it fixed, but it isn't that pressing. And when you do get it fixed (if the Da Vinci method is used) you'll be back up and bouncing around in 2 week. No joke, 2 weeks after my surgery I was on a plane for a 10 day journey to Florence and Venice with my then 9 month old. If you have and questions, comments, or concerns hit me up. I feel like a hernia expert.
@EvanandKatelynPodcast

Already knocked out two videos with the hernia but mine is quite painful when I try to sleep, which has really been throwing things off with our life. Not going to pause anything but also want to fix this as soon as possible 👍 thanks for the info and encouragement!
@mark.kaiser
@mark.kaiser 5 лет назад
@@EvanandKatelynPodcast Mine was inguinal (in my groin, the other kind is hiatal which is in the abdomen), and when it went back in it felt like I was kicked really hard in the groin where the pain would be up in my stomach and it felt like had to go #2. TMI I'm sure, but I hope this can give you an ease of mind until you get your's fixed that whatever you're experiencing is normal and not as severe and life altering as it first might seem. As far as getting it fixed I highly recommend the laparoscopic surgery (DaVinci method as my doc called it). Three tiny 1/2" long incisions, one of which was in my belly button. Stitching wasn't used to close the incisions. Instead the doc just superglued them closed. I walked in the hospital at 6am and was back home by noon. You won't want to move for 2 days, the 3rd day is a little better, and after a week you'll probably be 90% back to normal feeling. The bad part is that feeling you get when you lay down is probably because the hernia goes back in. Guess what they do when they fix the hernia: push it back in. So yeah, the kicked in the groin/stomach feeling? You'll have that for a week and a half...constantly. It gets better though. Good luck with everything, and keep us updated on your hernia status. I'm interested to hear about how you feel and your recovery once you get it fixed.

Does this mean you are putting off building that aircraft carrier? If so, it is OK. There are enough aircraft carriers in the world. Take care of yourself.

Ready for some un-asked-for medical advice? I don't know the exact nature of your hernia, Evan (groinal, spinal, or something else), so maybe none of this applies. 15 years ago I discovered I've got herniated disks in my lower back. They'll never be perfect again, but the only thing that helped - and I tried everything short of surgery - was a chiropractor. I know it's kind of a woo-woo new-agey thing to some people, and I don't recommend them because they can solve all the problems and make you immortal. But in this one instance, they worked where nothing else did. If your hernia is spinal, a chiropractor might be an option for you. (And if you're willing to come down to League City, I can recommend mine ;) ).

Oh I think chiropractors can be great! Mine is groinal but if I have some back troubles I'll try to remember to reach out!
