I think an important factor in how Lewis relates to the F1 world (compared to Seb) is that Lewis is the only black driver in F1 and has faced racism (including former drivers and team principals calling him the n-word) and discrimination since karting, while Seb is very comfortably the “typical” F1 driver that traditionalists would like implicitly. So I think Lewis is much more guarded and feels the need to assert his position more forcefully because he is genuinely more likely to be undervalued or dismissed. Unfortunately even now that he is the undisputed best driver of the 2010s, social media is full of overt racism towards him. I think interpreting his reactions and interactions with F1 media without that context misses a big part of the story. (Notably, Seb and Lewis are very close friends - increasingly close over recent years - and that’s in part because they both are strong advocates for the same off-track causes such as LGBT rights and climate change, so they respect each other a lot and I think Seb has an above-average understanding of the systemic challenges Lewis has faced in the motorsport world.)

Something to note on Lewis's comment of "you know if it was me I would've been penalised," is that in addition to the competitive aspect, it very well could be tied into the fact that he's the only Black driver in the sport (a sport that at the time had even less Black representation even amongst its staff than it does now, which still isn't a lot) and that there have been instances during his time in F1 where you could feel an undertone of his race being a factor in some decision-making in the sporting sense when it came/comes to him. It's pretty sad, actually, and makes sense that he might have even more of a 'me against the world' feeling than other competitors.
@maxpbeaumont

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, like I said, I’m sure there’s a reason for his mentality. And although I don’t really follow the sport, it sounds like this could certainly be big one.
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 9 месяцев назад
@@maxpbeaumontQuite accurate assessment of lewis's mentality. There has been several instances in the past where he's been unjustly penalized, most notably spa 2008, where he was stripped of a win. And of course abu dhabi 2021, where the race director "changed" the rules so he'd lose the championship. I'm not saying it's racially motivated, but not completely ruling it out.

as a big seb and lewis fan, here is kind of a breakdown of their relationship - 2008 - 2016 they weren't really close, more like coworkers - 2010-2013 seb was VERY different to ferrari seb in this video. you say he is very humble but in his dominating seasons, he was so wildly hated. he was very very competitive just like lewis. his famous quote "i was faster, i passed him, i won". the famous multi 21 situation. he was very much like lewis in this interview back then. - you say lewis is trying to assert his success which is true but the context of why he wanted to make sure people knew he was 2nd was because he beat his teammate at the time of this interview, nico rosberg who is like his biggest rival - 2015-2018 seb and lewis rivalry, mainly in 17 and 18. lewis was very much threatened by seb, they both were because they were rivals! and although they were cool, they had many blowups on track. the baku incident was the catalyst for their relationship as seb apologised to lewis for the crash and they became better friends - seb's ferrari years he defo became more humble, chill, family man. lewis has been the same pretty much his whole career. always motivated and on top of his game which is why hes the goat. i think mainly people dont like him because he was dominating the sport for so long. ppl HATED seb when he was dominating. but lewis gets more hate than other drivers because of his race too, its an internal thing many people dont realise. sometimes he can come off a bit whiny and i dont agree with all his statements but i do think not agreeing with everything a driver says vs the amount of hate lewis gets now, and what seb got before is unacceptable. - currently, lewis said seb is one of his few friends in f1. they're both very open in their beliefs and stand up for the right thing which is why they are my fav drivers of all time. seb said lewis was the best f1 driver even tho his idol is michael schumacher. they have a very wholesome friendship now :)

Vettel was young and aggressive when he was “hated”. But he grew up and calmed down, he matured. There is no growth in Lewis. He is the same. To some point, I don’t think he understands the friendship Sebastian shows him.

Would be really interesting to look at some more recent stuff of Lewis & Seb as their friendship definitely grew over the years after this. Would also love It if you looked at some Seb & Mark Webber stuff because I think that's where you would see a different side to Seb maybe. On the track he was super competitive and could come across arrogant. Look at Malaysia 2013 and his radio messages and the interviews after that, or his press conference in China 2013 the race after. 'I was racing. I was faster. I passed him. I won'. I think you would definitely see Seb's ego around that time too.

I really enjoyed this. What you are seeing here is Lewis the competitor doing an interview with his fiercest rival at the time. The competition never stops for Lewis and he is always looking for that mental edge. At this time he was always the driver on his own. There is a driver parade before each race where they would put the drivers on a bus together. The rest would be talking and Lewis would be by himself with his headphones on. If you take Lewis out of competition mode where he doesn't feel the need to prove himself like in the F1 world or on the big talk shows you get to see more of the real Lewis. Very interesting character. Seb, on the other hand, was perceived differently in his Red Bull days. Red Bull is an extremely cutthroat team and Seb was seen in very much the same way. That perception changed a lot during his time at Ferrari. There was a famous incident where Seb rammed Lewis intentionally with his car. Caused a media firestorm. Interestingly both drivers say that incident actually brought them closer together.

About the penalties a bit of context: back in the early days, between 2007 and 2012, Hamilton had several penalties that were pretty stupid. Even had penalties because he said something to the press and the FIA didn't like it. So I don't think this is Hamilton being "people are against me" but him just venting about it, because he's with people he feels good with and at a time where he was much more "correct" and careful on track. I remember those days and some penalties were way too much, even for fans it did seem like the FIA had a "chip on the shoulder" when it came to Lewis. About Lewis and Seb they work great together and are good friends. I think this is because Seb is an extrovert, communicative type of person, with a great sense of humor and Lewis is more introverted, the listener type. Usually the extroverts have the ability to make introverts open up more and I think that's what Seb does to Lewis.

Max should firstly react to the time Alexander Albon and Max Emilian Verstappen where together. Well, it ended not well in end for Alex performance wise. But the chemistry between them was not as great as the Ric & Max bromance. Still despite that other friendship/driver pairing they had a good relationship (Alex & Max). Albon has an interesting personality as well. Yeah could be cool to see more about his current teammate (Logan S.) as well. Close second for me is definitely Nico vs Lewis. And perhabs even contrast that with Rosberg (Williams) and Lewis (McLaren) + their relationship prior to 2014.

7:30 Seb know the sport like no other. I mean naming every champion IN REVERSE ORDER without a mistake is something. That's over 50 names. I have to agree with others tho, Seb inside the car and Seb outside the car are 2 very, very different person. He was just as competitive (and even arrogant) as Lewis, if not more. I hated him in his Red Bull era, he was just a douche (same with Max, but he is getting better as well)

Vettel *used* to have a huge ego and was awful to listen to on the radio and after races, but at some point he totally switched persona to this relaxed, cool, caring guy. I think it's as soon as he realised his car couldn't win he was happy to just enjoy life, but while competing for the win he was ultra, super competitive, like Lewis. Lewis hadn't really ever driven a car that wasn't a potential winner (until the last 2 years) so he's never had the chance to wind down and chill a little bit. It'll be interesting to see what he does when he retires, I suspect he'll end up like Sebastien, working for charities and so on.

@ 5:15 I find it interesting that Lewis stated such good things about Seb here but this guy Max doesn’t acknowledge it but @ 5:00 he praises Seb for saying good things about Lewis. Sorry but I think this guy subconsciously likes to pick Lewis apart. This is exactly what we see with human nature and even a communication expert can help himself. It appears the “it” person always gets picked apart more harshly and it’s very subtly apparent in this video and his other videos on Lewis.

Just saw this video after all the time since I have only been watching your f1 videos, and this one didn't get recommended to me. One thing I haven't seen anyone commenting about in the comments: you told Lewis to own the fact that he has plane. I think already at the time of this interview Lewis had sold away the plane because of his growing awareness of environmental issues. Also Seb has been big on environmental issues, so it probably was double as embarassing to admit that he had been so irresponsible towards nature as a younger lad. Everyone probably has stuff they have done younger that they feel same as Lewis towards his plane.

In my opinion the reason why lewis comes across badly is because he says genuinely awful things such as "boys don't wear dresses" as he bullied his own nephew who was a child and offended the entire queer community and his apology was a literal joke and not a real and honest apology Vettel wore a love is love t-shirt at Hungary and got reprimanded for not removing it during the national anthem lewis however took his t-shirt off Or when he said "is it coz I is black" which is an Ali G reference and is used when lewis makes a mistake or is involved in an incident and rather than own his part in the incident he instead opts to play the race card and considering his dad is black and his mum is white meaning he is actually mixed race not black it feels like a desperate attempt to avoid penalties and also comes across as offensive
