Love the clip starting out with Lex talking about propaganda. "Everyone is convinced that anyone who disagrees with them is only convinced of that because of propaganda. While simultaneously being confident that they themselves are not under the influence of propaganda." That idea explains so many of our problems with communication today.
To play devil's advocate... All of American and European media has been insisting this entire time that Russia is losing horribly and Ukraine is winning fantastically. Russian media has said that Russia is winning. Now, over the past several days, European and American media have become much more dire with their outlook of Ukrainian victory, and they are admitting that the Russian military is making significant gains and winning significant victories. There are plenty of journalists, including some stationed in Eastern Ukraine, who went from mocking Russian forces to panic and gloom and doom in just 24 hours. So... Which media sources were closer to the truth there? Edit- Russian media also maintained that there were biolabs funded by the Pentagon operating in Ukraine. Western media denied that. But then American government officials admitted it.
As an American living in Russia now, I can tell you that if you have face to face conversations with people (not internet chats), almost everyone knows the news is propaganda. This includes all classes and education levels. If you ask Americans if they are under propaganda most people say no. Although the media in the US strangely unites around most wars
Mass disinformation going on. Anyone who says there's no propaganda, or says only one side does it is mind numbingly unaware. Or... being factious on purpose and acting stupid.
it's because our population is indoctrinated to believe that "private enterprise = freedom". so nobody views the media here as propaganda because they think "oh its a private company why would they lie for the government". People don't realize that those private companies are beholden to the industries that manufacture weapons, pharmaceuticals, the finance industry, etc through advertising contracts. the same people who have bought the government, which turns them into essentially a mouthpiece for those fascistic interests. it's the insidiousness of capitalism, large-scale oppression masked by the illusion of "freedom"
As a russian myself writing this comment straight from Moscow I totally agree. Every single person I know is aware of propaganda. Still I can assume that the only kind of people who thinks that they are out of the scope of propaganda he could have talked to are people who don't watch TV mostly consuming news from youtube and such. For some reason they tend to think that if they are not watching federal channels and news they won't get brainwashed. The other interesting thing is the definition of propaganda itself. I've met full grown up and well-educated individuals saying something like " I know better cause I watch BBC / CNN / some random youtube blogger and they / he is telling the real truth "
I find it very amusing that even Lex is finding it hard to not overanalyse something he has absolutely no information on which is the actual mental state of putin and his inner circle. 🤡 The civil war with some russian involvement had been going on since around 2014, did Putin seriously have that little info on how they would respond? With how easy it is to insert spies in Ukraine? I appreciate that Lex is an academic mind who is an expert in many fields but the nuances, pros and cons of certain ways of waging war in the midst of a full on global disinformation campaign probably eludes him.

It's always interesting to watch people talking about things they think they understand (in this case Russia, Russians in general, Putin, Ukraine, Zelensky), and completely miss the fact that they look at their conversation's subjects through a glass prism of their own biased views on the world. In this case, obviously, a very American view. Same thing happens here in Russia, when people talk about the US. I'd love to see Joe Rogan interview an American citizen and a real Russian citizen (I mean someone living in Russia, not someone like Lex who is basically American since 11 y.o. and therefore has a very distorted view on modern Russians), and see them clash (peacefully of course). That would be a very eye-opening experience for everyone I think.
I am sorry for a lack of clear thinking from me about this crisis. It is too personal at this time, I have family in both places, and all I can think about is the fear, suffering, anger, and hate I see and hear directly from people I love on both sides. I constantly feel that I'm failing them and myself. I wish I was smarter or could understand the situation deeper. Please instead listen to people much more intelligent than me, for example the two I interviewed recently who give differing perspectives on this war: - Oliver Stone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ygAqYC8JOQI.html - Stephen Kotkin: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2a7CDKqWcZ0.html

Also how western countries are sending so much funding for this war it's nearly a NATO proxy war Edit: also how trumps phone call with Ukraine caused his impeachment and contributed to him losing the election.
it's really hard to know their own biases. Most things we encounter are constituted in a way we haven't formulated in our head yet, so before we even make a conscious observation, we bring bias into it
Jibber jabber back n forth lol My favorite : joe Rogan (probably a legitimate propagandist by now) says “especially when a leader assassinates his enemies” coming from an American that just killed oh idk a couple million people in Iraq just cause saddam was an enemy of bush hahahhaha we didn’t only assasinate our enemy but then all the millions of people living innocently in the country next to our enemy.
On one side he's talking about paranoid Putin, on the other side he's ignoring the fact that NATO in Ukraine was a red line for the entire Russia including Putin's opponents (for example even Navalny was for Crimea annexation) which was confirmed by todays CIA chief W. Burns 10+ years ago. So Lex is full of S.

Yeah Joe is adding that when people can't find their own meaning they look for a strong man to provide them the vision. Jesus prob was an average guy at his day but he created something that lead people for 2000 years. Elon Musk today is providing a vision of going to mars, maybe it will not be appreciated today , but in 1000 years his idea or him directly will be regarded as a GOD. And there will be a mythical story told to raise him even beyond the mere human that he was. Giving people a vision and a meaning which can last them for thousands of years very few people can do something like that. Him managing to create Tesla and Space X will serve as the real foundation that if you put your mind to it and work really really hard you can achieve it. That's what people want and need. We just need a good compelling story and if it's based on reality even better. Elon Musk could have failed his third launch could have crashed and destroyed both his companies that day , he would be regarded as nobody today as a charlatan.

I'm often struck by how brilliant, educated people are still limited and controlled by their own ideological capture. So that they can only see everything from a one sided view. And almost no one knows this about themselves. Case in point.
Lex is a perfect example for this - believes what he wants to believe. Acting like Ukraine has no Nazis killing their own people and not even mentioning it. Okay so even if they have some neo Nazi beliefs there are 900 of them in a country with a population of 44,000,000 people. Yeah can't help feeling Lex doesn't know as much people expect him to. He's just reiterating the whole west vs east spiel and adding zero depth to any of Joe's takes. Joe came out of this none the wiser for sure.
Not well. I doubt Lex even knows what BRICS stands for, yet he's talking about a miscalculation by Putin. In two-years' time we'll be talking about the end of the petrodollar and dollar hegemony. And the worst part will be we did NOTHING to stop it because everyone in the West was too wrapped up in the anti-Russia propaganda to notice what was happening.
Yeah, Ukraine leans towards "democracy"! What a joke. The opposition is literally BANNED in Ukraine, current regime came into power in a COUP, country is being ran by executive orders- a real democracy indeed! They literally don't have sovereignty or anything. Poroshenko was INSTALLED. This Lex guy smirking when mentioning what Russia is (if not democracy) should maybe explain how is democracy functioning in America. 6 January was considered A COUP and people are being arrested and sentenced to years in prison. In Ukranian coup 100 people were killed (both protesters and police officers) and American establishment calls it DEMOCRACY. WOW, just WOW!

@Nick Phelan yeah I was about to correct you but I read the entire message. I'm not even putting North Korea on the list because if we didn't interfere I believe North Korea and South Korea would work out a working relationship but we are there to always divide people from their people and we are number one. Do we actually vote for president or we vote for a figurehead? It appears like if we are interfering with Somalia for decades yet we don't have the same president for decades and that can go towards Afghanistan but yet the presidents change and things stay the same. They feed us rhetoric and they divide us just like they do with Thailand and China and Korea and even in Ukraine. More countries are telling us to stay away and we are looked at as the enemy with the path of ending up in a corner but hey we still have NATO.

Since he keeps bringing up India liking Putin, let me, an Indian, clarify certain things (of course I do not claim to represent all Indians and this is my view only). India/Indians have a historical liking towards American society (liberty, wealth, rationality, science, movies etc) but a simultaneous distrust towards their government (for their support for British empire, Pakistani and Afghani jihadis, apartheid S. Africa etc plus their constant need to put down our aspirations eg sanctions and assassinations for nuclear testing, interference in Kashmir issue etc). We may or may not like Putin, but we do support the Russian people and the Russian state for they have been a long-standing ally (especially for military/arms support, including their support for India in the 1971 war when USA+uk sent their fleets to enforce the genocide and mass rape of my people, the Bengalis, by Pakistan). Moreover, India has traditionally been in favour of a global status quo (as opposed to a unipolar world, whether led by either Russia/China/USA) that allows smaller, developing nations to have a political say/value, instead of being steamrolled by a hegemonic power. Ukraine itself aided Pakistan with offensive weapons. Hence, we Indians are rather hesitant to unnecessarily throw in our lot with the NATO. That being said, we do not hate/dislike Americans/Russians/Ukrainians, we love all of you + nor do we have any special liking for any particular western politician (though we do appreciate if they recognize us as a equal partner and show interest in developing a relationship with us).
Hahah... such naive thinking... usa government is corrupt but the worst elements come from the globalists..globalism has taken over the majority of countries. China is far worse in most ways than USA.... be real

Dude the rest of world cares way more about the US than the other way around. If we stopped giving money and sending troops everywhere? People from other countries would complain that we are isolationists. I don’t want our country constantly involved in conflicts but there’s no way the rest of the world wouldn’t complain if we didn’t get involved. If there’s a tsunami, we’re expected to give most of the money and aid, BUT that same country doesn’t want us involved in their business. Most of our profits had nothing to do with wars. And at least we make money off of it. Other countries have had thousands of years of war and don’t have clean running water.

It's gotta be intentional. "I don't know why Putin's popular" is as damning a political statement as one can make. But the question "Why is Putin popular in Donbas, Ukraine?" leads to answers he doesn't want to hear.
@@waynzignordics Putin is also popular because he is fighting against rainbow propaganda. IMHO the best source of information is to come and see for yourself. I'm a sailor, so I've travelled around the world and seen some things. Last time I've been to Syria we had some main engine malfunction, so we had to stay here for a while. During this time we were visiting several locations. There was an event in a town we were passing by. US marines checkpoint was surrounded by locals and some of them were armed. People yelled and threw some junk at yanks. They were quite pissed at those USMC guys, probably not without a reason. Situation got quite explosive so marines had to get out of there. A week later in Tartus we saw several russian checkpoints here and there and you know what? People seemed to like them. I've asked some locals about what they think of those russian guys. One Syrian soldier told me a story about earlier time when they fought against ISIS. There was a small town attacked by a large ISIS force. The town itself had only few russian paratroopers protecting it for quite a while and they were completely surrounded and running low on everything. That Syrian soldier was a part of a relief force send to aid russians. They couldn't lift the siege for a long time and he was sure that those russians didn't make it. They dug in at some small factory administrative building, the whole territory was covered with bodies the building itself was almost razed to the ground. But to his amazement he found russians alive. There was a single guy still standing, most others were heavily wounded, those that managed to remain conscious were still holding guns even when they couldn't even walk. The remaining guy tied his squad with hand grenades and everyone there was ready to die, but they got saved. That Syrian soldier was touched by the fact that russians fought for his homeland literally to their last breath like it was their own. Damn, you can say all you want but I've been in that country myself and saw with my own eyes how locals admire and respect russians and I'm sure that you can understand why after this story. West treats those people like second sort and calls their home a third world country, on top of that US forces razed several cities to the ground. At the same time russian soldiers are ready to die for them.. Things I saw expose all that bunch of lies and hypocrisy we get from official media. I refuse to believe that russians treat Ukrainians worse since they are their kin. So if you want to know the real thing come and see it for yourself. By believing in what someone tells you're not getting any real knowledge, but only buy their opinions, as Alan Watts once said. Have a good one and may the waves be good where you are.

Lex has gone from a guest I skipped over because I didn't know anything about him whatsoever. He has, over the past 3 years, become one of the few commentators on any platform that I truly trust on their perspective. He is thoughtful and measured and compassionate while also being hyper reasonable. Tip of the cap to him in a sea of misinformation.
Yea glad he showed Joe that Ukraine was most corrupt in past under Russia and is now becoming freer across the board. Only Putin wants to make the two seem equal
@ Andrew It sounds like you have it backwards. Lex unmasked himself when he interviewed Albert Bourlas (CEO) of PFZR. Here he is spouting a bunch of pro Ukrainian Bullshtt. He doesn’t mention that Zelensky outlawed the Russian language (discriminating against ethnic Russia d in east Ukraine. He doesn’t mention the violence and terror that has been waged against them for 8 years. Nor does he mention that Zelensky outlawed his political opposition, basically shittin on any notion of a democracy in Ukraine. Lex might as well be in the CIA. He sounds exactly like them.
Lex had it right when he said putin is famous in India. When India was at war, Russia supported India whereas UK and USA supplied military aid to Pakistan and sent submarines to counter india. As the saying goes, never forget the ones who helped you in your need.
That was the 1970s and it was the Soviet Union (Of which Ukraine was a member). Putin's Russia has a defence cooperaton agreement with Pakistan and is a major ally of China. Do you think the average European Russian sees brown faced Indians as equals? While Ireland has already had an Indian heritage PM and Britain is likely to get one in September.
A point that resonates with me is what Lex discusses at the end, with how the US prizes freedom but can commit atrocities abroad in the name of freedom. I think it's more pertinent to look internally. The US, the "land of the free", has the highest rates of incarceration per captita by a *factor of 3* from most Western countries; the highest in the world. About 700 in every 100k people are imprisoned in the US. In the UK it's about 150. Italy, ~90. France is ~100. And that's the countries ranked higher on the freedom index. The US beats Russia at 450, China at 120, Cuba at 500, Iran at 280. The land of the free has more people locked up than most of the Western world combined. That's baffling.
@Nick Phelan Thats one possibility. OR you could take a closer look at how civilized societys treat people and prisoners and see how the numbers of ofenders and in particular reofenders goes down drasticaly... unless of course you are convinced that us-amerikans are just way more evil than the rest of us... ;-)
The USA is a lot more violent society than European countries, and although the rate of incarceration is higher there are many violent criminals who are not ending up in prison but should because of left-wing DAs. Ethnicity does play an enormous role in violence in society - European countries are becoming much more violent and one day may reach the USA's levels due to immigration. For example in Sweden, where 8 out of 10 convictions for rapes by strangers were by people born outside Europe and unheard of gun crime and explosions are becoming a daily event in immigrant communities. In the UK the levels of knife murders are rocketing in ethnic communities. If you separate prison rates out by ethnicity the US/European levels should be closer. To the person who says people should be executed - people are not executed in Europe. To the person mentioning imprisonment for non-violent drug offences, drug overdoses (legal and illegal) killed 107,000 people in USA, mostly young people, in 2020 or 2021 (can't remember which) - fighting drugs is essential to save an entire generation from addiction, but I suppose the war will be inevitably lost because not enough will to combat it ruthlessly enough.
@@adameaszy7879 they lock you up for years in Russia if you have a bit of weed. And I’d hate to say it but we lock more people up because we just have more crime here. I’d feel a lot safer in these other countries (even china) than a lot of places in the US.
What a great analyst that closes his eyes to gather his thought and then wonder why Putin is so popular. Probably because he cant analyse a shit outside his American way of thought (?) or even think that USA has an NDP (near death president) and all other nations wonders the same
I mean he started that both sides are under propaganda as if its some equality here were simple truth is that is one dictator country just attacked other killing and raping people, destroying buildings etc
You think you’re hearing an honest opinion, but actually falling for propaganda. Falling for it so hard that you’re praising his approach for its honesty.
FDR was ahead of his time with Fireside chats. Having a president actively recognizing its nation’s problems was huge for keeping trust in your government.
This clip should be used for entertainment purposes. There are a lot of assumptions in this conversation. I am Ukrainian and have Russian family members.
@@davidsbgr the answers in general are very vague. i would be more impressed if someone came on and brought facts from both sides... like for instance to mention that the Azov battalion were neo-nazis. Or that Ukraine banned Russian from being taught as the primary language in school. I mean, those things are pretty big, it's obvious you would lose a lot of support from Russian speaking areas if you banned their language from being taught...
@@Writeous0ne hahahah don't tell me you still believe that neo nazi bullshit. Meanwhile, Russia is full of Wagner members, even Putin's close people are tattooed SS members. Russia is there to steal oil, gas and food and literally nothing else. In 2012 Ukraine has found massive amounts of oil and gas, how conveniently, it's FuLL oF NAzIs and it needs to be DeNAziFIed hahahah...
I am a graphics designer and my daily job is figuring out how to get someone to buy this, get that feeling or do that thing. If you think there's no propaganda in our society, you're just misunderstanding the word marketing.
Propaganda exists, the difference is that in some places you have multiple competing propagandas which (ideally) provide information for people to make an informed decision, while in others there is only one voice. As a designer you should know the difference.
It's a funny thing. In my native language we don't have different words for advertising, marketing and (political) propaganda. There's only "propaganda", meaning all three of those things.
I don’t know who Lex talked to, but I’m from Russia and there’s clearly state propaganda in the media. It’s unfair and simplistic to make sweeping generalisations about whole nations, which makes me question his analysis.
Hear me out. You're right. General statements like that atent good. However, there are clearly a good chunk of the russian population, possibly majority? Idunno. Anyway, plenty of Russians do not believe there is any propaganda going on.
Lex is full of crap. Since the start of Operation he got emotional and promised that he would meet Putin. This is the same Lex that had the Head of Pfizer and made him out to be a great man saving humanity. Zelensky is balls deep into the WEF, he will rebuild Ukraine as a digital surveillance state that is his plan.
Lex is such a smart guy and seems to have a really good heart but seems to be somewhat naive when it comes to the hardness of the world and how much propaganda and disinformation there is out there (yes even in the West).
I cant stand the guy... XD Naivete? Seriously? In an adult with that level of intelectual capavilities? Do you know how many times google has throw his chanel to my face? To my horror dozens. A really unprecedented number of times in my sperience in RU-vid so... On that alone I think this is a specially irronic interview of an actual propagandist XD
After all the guests that Lex have had. He seems to have such a shallow and limited view of the Ukrainian Russian situation. Joe must definitely get someone who really knows about this crisis. But again, Joe might not want to get in to it for real.
Lex is probably in a very complex situation when talking about Ukraine. Being Russian/Ukrainian/American he has his heart on all sides of the conflict I imagine.
Joe is interviewing him like he's an expert on the topic, but Lex is interviewing Oliver Stone to gain wisdom on the war, while Stone being an interviewer himself. This just shows where down the line Lex is on the topic and this podcast proved it.
@@Max-pr1ii wow, what an insight, bravo 👏. It was corrupt, it is still corrupt now to a lesser extent though because people are really angry. We see corruption as collaboration now with the enemy
Still I think it's amazing that Lex can have a platform as big as his even with his Asperger's. He really puts himself out there even though it's apparent he has difficulty communicating normally. I love that guy
What's left to say after the Blood of Every Notable Army has been spilt on this Soil? Dead Fathers make Angry Sons. They can point in any direction and lay Rightful Blame for the situation there. Aside from Northeast, any direction of the Compass points to a group of people interested in it's control. London or Baghdad. Moskow, St Pete, Konigsberg or New Delhi, Beijing, Tokyo Washington DC, New York, Salt Lake City, Houston, Chicago....all for different reasons. Ukraine is stuck in the middle of a See Saw that has a seat for every Idiology History has Produced. Organized Religions and Governments have hated this place because it's people refuse to buy the propaganda. It's really easy to tell what is B.S. when you are privy to All the Narratives. How can Lex look at us all, and say that his parents or their parents were Lucky enough to Leave that Situation Behind? Smart Enough? Available to the CIA for debriefing? And not offend Aunts, Uncles, and cousins? Not disgrace the proud memory of those buried and gone. How do you tell the World not to pull the string again? How about we ask ourselves... how this man got his last name, then look back at the History written by all the propagandists, and be honest with ourselves.
I LMFAO when this Lex guy said that in the United Corporations of America there's respect for human freedom, human rights, and is the embodiment of the idea that all men are created equal........talking about being propagandized! 🤣🤦♂️ What a genius!
He Definitely is idealistic lol, although we ARE a country that touts an ideological identity of exactly what you just named….just has never been implemented. And in recent decades, as more people gain basic rights as citizens, a corporatocracy has emerged that started gaining immense power over the government in the 1950s beginning with the implementation of military Keynesianism as foreign policy, and domestic social issues have become pageantry the more people began to unite & fight corruption/oppression. Atp, sadly, we have 2 parties who make up the majority that drive division & a decent amount of their voters who are indoctrinated with their rhetoric, and who seem to only think rights are relevant when applied to someone who agrees with them. Weird place rn, a corporatocracy of 2 parties paid for by the same general corps/oligarchs in offices & a lot of citizens that would back totalitarian ways of either party that they belong to….all while saying it’s to protect us from totalitarianism (whether from fascists by the DNC or marxists by the GOP, depending on ones allegiance) . Shit is wild The ideals you touted, at their core, center around individualism & personal Liberty. That’s given way to rampant collectivism & tribalism permeating many aspects of American society, not only politics.
although I will say tho, Lex really is pretty bright on most topics (I just discovered his podcast a few months ago & have been a huge fan of it Since. Also just found out he’s an MIT Grad & prof who works with AI, why he interviews tech/psychology/“power & evil” focused guests)…it’s just social topics that he seems to be naive on lol. Also why he gets incessant jokes about being a robot learning to interact with humans. And, well, what you pointed out requires social finesse to glean, I mean shit even non-socially awkward people have been Propagandized lol
