Lex’s reaction to Clark pushing away that car looked so genuine. You can tell by his expressions that he felt emotions like surprise, fear, and triumph that he was right all along about Clark. Grade A acting on Michael Rosenbaum’s part. Seriously one of the best characters in the show.

The story of Lex was the greatest part of Smallville. Everyone knows Clark’s background, but watching Lex go from Clark’s best friend, and slowly descend into evil, is what made Smallville so great. The show wasn’t the same after Lex’s character was wrote off, and it came back full circle and became great again when Lex returned and had the iconic stare down with Clark in the mansion.

We had never seen the story of Lex Luthor before this. We knew he was a villain but watching the entire series of Smallville we see how much Lex went through. It's no wonder he became what he did. The games Lionel played on him, drugging him to make him question his sanity, relationships that made him distrustful, spending time in mental asylums. A perfect cocktail of human decline
@Renagade2332
@Renagade2332 2 года назад
Don't forget about the constant judgements of the Kents (specifically Jonathan and Clark), despite how many times Lex DID help them out. (Buying the Kent Farm and giving them the deed so they didn't lose their home in Season 3 Episode 2 should have won their trust and love and shown that Lex only ever wanted to be loved by them). Never mind the fact that Clark gaslighted Lex constantly and tried to make him seem crazy, when EVERYONE continued to be like "Clark Kent is special, he has a secret" and Clark refusing to budge even when Lex did his best to be a friend. The gaslighting (Clark), the blaming Lex because of being Lionel's son (Jonathan), and just the abuse you mentioned (Lionel) would be enough to make the sanest man alive snap and just be *done* with everything and everyone.

it was a good show and it started a trend, even tough towards the end I started to get impatient with all the petty excuses found by writers so Clark would not fly (I adored in season when he was "possessed" and flew :-) even if it was short ... so powerful) ... but there were also nice story arcs as well. The thing about Lex is because he was shown no true trust or unconditional love, he can not extend the same to anyone: he is alone. The only person he considered a brother was lying to him the whole time no matter how hard he tried to prove he could be trusted… He isolated himself and slowly started making choices that a normal person would not.. the forced cloning of your wife? A fake pregnancy? Clones of himself as spare parts? The way he disregards special people he uses to get at Clark… he slowly becomes evil. The world isn’t black and white but there is “right” and Clark is the epitome of “right thing to do” and Lex chooses the wrong. When it came to stealing Lana from Whitney, Clark asked Lex: “what would you do?” And lex said he would go for it and take advantage of Lana and Whitney’s misunderstanding…. Only a dick does that. I’m not sure what constitutes as evil but I know evil means bad and Lex goes bad.

@funshine817
@funshine817 10 месяцев назад
I understand your pov, but trusting Lex was dangerous, as he was raised by a monster, and had been through some really horrible sh!t by the time they met when Clark was a teenager, and Lex 20ish. Lex was a loose cannon, and Clark's secret was way bigger than lying about, for example, if Clark was gay or something. The ramifications of Lex knowing the truth could have ended Superman before he even began! Clark was in an awful predicament, for sure. Trust has to be earned, not just freely given. Lex's first response to seeing Clark use his powers was to tell anyone and everyone! He did not keep quiet. If he had, maybe Clark could have considered trusting him, and Lionel would never have drugged him. Just my thoughts about it!
@averyl6086
@averyl6086 4 года назад
Perhaps I'm missing something but the more I watch this show the more I think Lex was never evil. He was by no means perfect he lied and did many bad things. However, more often than not when he did those things because he was left with no other choice. Quite often he is caught and regardless of his reasons or intentions people automatically condemn him. Whereas in contrast, Clark seems to eventually always be forgiven. It doesn't matter what lies or secrets he keeps because it is simply excepted Clark keeps secrets and tells lies. He even went so far as to allow Lex to think he was losing his mind. Yes, he tried to save Lex at the last minute but it all could have been avoided if Clark had taken Lex with him before they caught. However, rather than do the right thing Clark chose to abandon Lex after using his powers right in front of him because he wanted to save himself.

Maybe Lex was turned evil by the many things that happens to him. But we should not forget the main factor of the whole series. The meteor shower. Every villain that Clark faced was affected by the meteor shower, giving them powers and apparently also messing with their psych and making them evil. It's not clear if they were already evil and the meteors just potentialized it or if they turned evil because of the meteors. But in either case Lex was affected by the meteors too. As the story line suggest, the meteors gave Lex an intelligence above the normal (his superpower) and also potentialized the evil that Lex already had

Lex getting gaslit and manipulated so many times is a much better villain origin story than Superboy accidentally blowing your hair off of your head.

I like the acting! Plus, you have to wonder how they dealt with being in different situations. The actors themselves. Lex in a straightjacket, etc.

I lowkey believe Clark was a big factor in lex becoming evil. He was supposed to be his very best friend and they’ve said on many occasions Clark was the only one he trusted, and he lied to him. Lex was way too smart to be lied to, and he couldn’t handle it when Clark did. I feel like this all could’ve been avoided if Clark would’ve just told him on the many occasions Lex connected the dots. It’s not like he would’ve exploited Clark, and even if he tried to he didn’t know Clark’s kryptonite weakness until around s7 and Clark could’ve easily avoided that.

Lex was abused and betrayed by anyone he loved and when he found out Clark lied to him and tried to make a fool out of him he finally snapped that a guy he thought was his brother would be so shallow and untrustful. I feel bad for Lex but let's not forget that Lex also took things a little too far.
@omosango7870
@omosango7870 2 года назад
My theory is that most of the conflict was caused by Jonathan and his obsession with "protecting Clark's secret". He forced Clark into lying to his friends, and eventually damaged most of his relationships, irreparably in Lex's case

Remember all the way back when Luthor first appeared in the comics. Clark caused Lex to be evil by rescuing him from a fire in his lab, but in the process causing his hair to fall out. Cheesy, but that's how Lex has always been meant to be...evil "created by" Superman.
@joemars41

You're all forgetting that it was in luthor bloodline to be evil - the Kent's or Clark felt it was too high a price (exploitation, etc.) To risk...
@arfbark
@arfbark Год назад
@@joemars41 Based on what I got from Smallville he didn't show signs of being evil to Clark specifically. Looking back I think that what you said is partially true, that Lex would've exploited him for evil, but at the same time that would be more likely to happen if he was driven for revenge. I fully believe that Smallville Lex could've had a different outcome. Either way if he would've told Lex or not he would've been taken advantage of. I would have rathered it not been out of a place of anger because now he has a real goal to hurt instead of "just business."

Yeah, Lex losing his memory at the end of the series was litteraly denying his entire character arc. So dumb. I would have write their last scene together with Lex telling Superman that from now on he will be ruthless and without mercy with anyone who gets in his way, but also making the promise that he would never touch or reveal his private identity in honor of the good old times.

I think, like the song suggests, Lex felt Hurt, because in that moment he realized Clark had never been honest with him, even after 3 years of Clark claiming to be his close friend. And all Lex ever wanted was to be someone's best friend. It's like the background song is saying: "Everyone I know, goes away in the end." From this point Lex started to hate Clark, though it was subtle at first. People might think Lex forgot seeing Clark do that, because of the drugs, but if you listen to the lyrics, the song is saying: "But I remember everything."

As many times as Clark saves Lex's life you would think Lex would feel a bit of gratitude later in life. As for not telling Lex the truth, He was never trustworthy and Clark knew it, instinctually if not consciously. There are some secrets too important to be revealed. I wouldn't trust Lex Luther with the secret ingredient in my recipe for Chocolate Frosting, he's not trustworthy.

It always makes me wish they would do an animated DC movie based off of Smallville with Lex knowing Clark's secret as Superman when he becomes Superman instead of Lex forgetting so we can see how that dynamic would go. I could see something like Clark is in Lex's office, Clark stands near a window and looks at someone who used to be his friend and then back out over the city and asks: If you want me destroyed so badly, why don't you out me as Superman? Lex pours himself a drink and approaches Clark as he too looks out the window, staring out into the city: because there would be no glory in that Clark, when I defeat you, I want it to mean something, I want the honor of that..
