i own this lexus and it is electronically limited at 228km/h

I have a GS250 and the high gearing is not an issue at all. It is plenty fast enough and gives economy very close to a hybrid. They have now cancelled the GS line and now the ES is your only option. This means we're stuck with FWD in the future and in the UK at least, a dull hybrid powertrain.

this isnt racing car...if you want performance buy bigger engine..this is about luxury and comfort and it does it well. Those gears are there for regular efficient driving...

The GS250 is a rock solid reliable cruiser. Its simply not designed to be ragged about at over 130mph. Saying that though, it could handle being pushed hard long after your average Audi or BMW had clapped out due to being pushed.

At what RPM is rev limiter? Did you try to accelerate on 4th gear to 7.000 RPM (or rev limiter wherever it is)? Maybe therefore shifting up to 5th would happen more power (higher revs) on 5th gear so more speed you would be able to gain?

it makes a weird sound when going into 5th, maybe there is something wrong with the torque converter?

I think it's got the gear ratios from the gs 350 sold in the US,the people at lexus probably didn't change it for the smaller engine.Anyway is top speed really that important?

to much dump ppl here talking shit!!!! this is a 2.17 ton car with a small 2.5L engine with 202 hp and 6th gear is overdrive......if you want speed and performance get the 3.5L it goes up to 260km/h (160mi/h)

This engine may be slow, but it certainly sounds great. Maybe even better than the 3.5.

its a heavy car and not meant to be fast with the 206hp V6 think!!! if you want better performance try the 450h

This carmaker has been around since God knows when and their mother company (Toyota) is the largest carmaker in the world. I'm sure they know what they're doing and have reasons behind it. I believe the long gears are set up for fuel economy and refinement with the best compromise in speed. I'm sure they have the knowhow to make fast and exciting cars (RS200, Celica, Sprinter, Soarer, Supra, Chaser, IS-F, LFA, etc). Ultimate speed is probably never the aim in the GS250. They have the GS350, GS450h for the more demanding (and financially able) ones. Nobody in their right mind buys a 2.5L V6 sports "biased" sedan that weights round 1.7 tonnes and complaints about its 0-100 in 8 seconds time and 220 km/h top speed. I bet Lexus didn't see that coming. With that said, those acceleration and top speed are not bad; and it would probably help to have a closer 2, 3, 4, and 5th gear with a 6th over drive. But then again, they probably know what they are doing...

I agree with you about the gear ratios. The previous generation's five speed auto was much better in that regard.

It's a shame it has 2 gears overdrive... and tops out at 4th gear. I am a Lexus fan but admit that sometimes Lexus and Toyota does weird things, such as putting this transmission that would probably suit not a 2.5 v6 but a 4.5 V8 ... And they just had to put their eight speed auto into the car ...

you may try shorter 4.1 diff . stock is 3.9.

The car hits it's Max speed and kicks into Overdrive . Same thing happens in 6speed in a Manual transmission..Revs drop when you hit 6th gear...

The problem with this car probably is that the real power is in the high range of rpm and the gearbox doesn't allow it to rev that much at high speed. The ZF-8 speed with close ratio gears would do this car good.

I can imagine that this could be an issue in Germany for example, where is lot of highways without speed limit. So Germans (big market for Lexus) can prefer E Klasse or A6 over this GS...

It's a pity this car can't get a extreme accelaration. Otherwise, it's real use is focused towards comfort, and this car absolutely offer it!

unsure what petrol you tank, I got GS250 past 3 years and accelerates better however I have assumption that 6th gear is rather for the economy than for the acceleration.

Well, that’s ok for mid-size sedan with 200 horse power.. GS 350 would do that much better.

That's why you go for the GS350 or GS450h. Nothing against the 2.5 V6 but that motor is short on torque and power yet it only returns average MPG for such a small powerplant.

lexus cars were designed and built to be comfort cruising cars, not racing cars. if you want a fast car, get a benz, or a lexus lfa or a gsf. any other lexus is no different than this, even their top speed isnt any respectable by any means

My Auris 2.0 d4d can do more... 210km/h with no problem....

The gear ratio between the 4th and 5th gear seems too far apart, and at 220 km/h (5000 Rpm), the revs is too low for the engine to sustain its speed, considering it is a 2.5 liter V6. The transmission is not meant for this engine, and perhaps for the 4th, 5th and 6th gear, the gear ratio should be closer to each other, to allow for optimal revs which can help maintain speed, e.g. at least 5800 Rpm at 220 Km/h on 5th gear. The engine appears to be struggling to build speed once the 4th gear is reached. Even on the GS350 which could be using a similar transmission setup, the acceleration is pretty slow once 4th gear is reached, which could mean the gear ratio is a little too long, but the performance is definitely better on the 3.0 liter V6 engine of the GS350 due to greater torque: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-yXPT-Gc2Y.html

What a pointless video, this isn't a "race" spec GS, this is a daily motorway grinder to get you from A to B in comfort and relaxation. If you want a "race" spec GS, buy a GSF, that's the Performance version.
