Lexus GS F vs Vauxhall VXR8: mighty V8 saloon track battle 

If you factor in the development budget of the Holden vs the Lexus ... I think the team down under did a pretty good job with the resources they had...

Aussie cars are much more raw and their price reflects this. It's a big country with a small population, but we deliver absolute top shelf bang for your $.

Dear auto express great review i agree the lexus may be the overall package as it should be at nearly double the price in australia. Please remember the hsv is not just a car with a lsd and an engine. Stage 2 magnetic ride is pure genius, nearly 400mm 6 piston v8 supercar developed brakes that stop in 33m from 100 similar to 458 ferrari better than e63 amg also, nearly 1g in lateral g is amazing for any car now days even if its not like a lotus in a slalom,torque vectoring is clever, proper cooling too. I just get tired of people saying aussie cars just have an engine, we deserve more praise:)

Nice review. I would like to see more 0-60 tests being done though, to see what can be done in reality compared to claimed stats from manufacturers.

I'm surprised the VXR8's exhaust is so hushed. I would have assumed it would sound like a monster coming to eat your family, even moreso than the ZL1 that that engine came out of.

i love both cars... huge fan of holden but also love lexus. But i think i would go for the hsv (vxr8) in manual because i just love driving manual over any automatic and even dual clutches...

Fantastic realistic review. I agree, I bought the Lexus GS F here in the states. I love it, best car I have ever owned, and I have had modern Audis, Mercedes, and a Corvette Grand Sport. The Lexus is truly special, and makes me feel grateful that I own her.

Fantastic review, i have had HSV's and currently an ISF. Love the muscle car HSV's, but would choose a GSF anyday of the week. Class, reliability, technology, comfort, with V8 fun!!

While waiting for a new sports extractor to be fitted in my Nissan I noticed a skip bin full of new and complete exhaust systems, asked the manager what was wrong with them and he said nothing is wrong, they are the original exhaust from Holden V8 cars because owners replace them with aftermarket performance exhaust asap. It would be interesting to review both cars with performance exhaust systems but I have a suspicion the Lexus may already have a fine system and not benefit as much as the Holden. Totally agree with the conclusion to this road test though. Good review.

The GS f does not come with a Torsen. It comes standard with a TVD and it even says so in the car! Still, I'm not surprised it completed the lap 1.5 seconds ahead of the RC F.

Wait up. If you take the limiter of a Vauxhall VXR8, it can go 195 mph? Just wondering.

the gts Would have been quicker if he left the esp on in track mode, the esp allows slip but still points you on the straight and narrow to put the power down. The Gts also has torque vectoring as standard btw.

The Lexus is way better equipped and is actually a premium/luxury car, unlike the re-badged Holden. Not hating on the Aussie, it's just that it's a poor comparison.

If Lexus really wanted to take on the germans they should have put the lfa v10 engine in this car and stunned the whole car market. It saddens me because you know there were probably atleast some engineers at Lexus that probably suggested this but were turned away. As a huge Lexus fan I am a little disappointed and wish they would have done more to take on those germans. :( great video :)

thats the thing when you have the money you wouldnt mind spending it on quality, but if you dont mind your door handles loosening and other minor manufacturing issues, you cant beat a holden, My uncles 08 Holden SS had a rusted out radiator in just under 6 years...after having holdens for over 20 years he know wants to move up to a Lexus!! Smart Man!!

Cheaper, more powerful and faster than the Lexus, and looks a LOT more fun too - the VXR8 is the clear winner. Plus in the hands of a more capable/aggressive driver, I bet it would lap even faster still.

The Holden looking dated but perhaps even because of that much better looking that the fussy Lexus. For the money it has to be the Holden.

The Lexus is obviously the better car but the Holden is such a special beast. It would be my choice with a manual gearbox.

The fact that that the Commodore is no longer made while the Lexus still is running off the production line means spare parts for the Commodore won't be necessarily be cheaper than those found on the Lexus.

So a comparison between a fancy Toyota and a true Australian muscle car? Let's put it this way. In the UK, no one is going to look twice at a Lexus, whereas everyone is going to look several times at the Holden going past.

"Classy looks" is a subjective comment. I think many people would say the Holden is better-looking than the Lexus. As to the handling...well, if you can actually drive you can control this car quite easily. The handling of all VF series Commodores is right up there with the finest cars in the world. Holden chassis engineers were world-renowned for their abilities. Sure, the Lexus has a more modern powerplant and more hi-tech goodies but if you want a car that can trounce most anything else on the road with ease... a car built tough to withstand outback conditions and not have to pay a huge amount of money as you would for the Lexus then it must be the Holden as first pick every time.

Interesting comparison but if you are talking a track comparison and bang for your buck the “Vauxhall” (Holden) is the clear winner. These 2 cars are both built with a completely different philosophy however and appeal to two different types of buyers. Cars aren’t always about practicality but how they make you feel and I suspect if you are drawn to either one of these cars for their quite different attributes you would be happy with your purchase.

He forgot to mention the Lexus RCF for the performance Lexus'

For that Holden fans, enjoy it while you can because what the video failed to mention is that Holden will stop making cars by next year, so that VXR8 will become somewhat a collector's item.

whole point of Lexus GSF is its NA. Cant compare it to a supercharged motor, different category.

Ok so old matey reviewing the cars didn't really talk about the technology in either cars. It sounds like you guys don't get all the features of our GTS in the Vauxhall version? The suspension has an extra setting, as well as the bi-modal exhaust, heads up, lane departure, collision avoidance, blind side, torque vectoring, automatic self parking as well as the standard heated seats etc.The GTS is around 1930kgs.

Look, to be fair to traditional naturally aspirated V8 Holdens, someone should drop that Lexus V8 in the 1990s Toyota Lexcen (in addition to parts from the HSV parts bin) and call it a day. The fact that 1990s Lexcen weighs only 1340 kg puts it on par with modern day V8 supercars.

A second faster sadly does not make up for the difference in refinement, workmanship, reliability, comfort, technology in which the Lexus shines in comparison to a Vauxhall/Holden/Opel or whatever it's actually called.

6.2 liter supercharged almost 600 hp to the Lexus natural aspirated 471 hp and its BARLEY a second faster ? Even with OVER 100 more HP it cant outrun the Lexus. Testament to great chassis development in the Lexus. Lexus GSF is the winner. Beautiful and well engineered sedan. High tech with Lexus Luxury with great performance. The Vauxhall saving grace is just a big engine where the Lexus is the COMPLETE package. " Lexus doesn't have much high performance history " Wrong Lexus has produced the ISF, LFA, RCF, now this GSF. Thats more then enough cars to show Lexus is serious about performance. Thats more high performance cars then Ininiti and Acura.

The Holden is dead in the water next year when GM stops manufacturing vehicles in Australia. The Holden Commodore was the best seller in Australia for many years but has been overtaken by the humble Toyota Corolla. I think Lexus will be around a little longer than Holden, and in any case I know which one of these two I would have.

Lexus sports sedans, expensive as hell yet continuously beaten in speed/handling by AMGs, M5, CTS-V and now add a Holden HSV into the mix. Vauxhall VXR8 for the win, no competition.

The GS F has Torque-vectoring diff, not torsen... what a beginner

A supercharger that doesn't kick in till 3000rpm??!!! Every and any turbo will beat that...so why supercharge it rather than strap a turbo to it? So all the extra power, massively bigger engine and torque led to a 1 second difference, perhaps Holden should have stuck to a turbo as they don't seem to know what a supercharger is!

Will take the Vauxhall VXR8 over that Lexus. The only American powered car I like beside SRT Viper and the Challenger Hellcat. To be honest, Vauxhall build better American powered sedans than Cadillac, the Vauxhall is definitely my favorite sedan beside German sedans. What's better than a LSA+ Limited slip diff+ Manual+ RWD? (Although this got an auto). Get over it, Lexus is the looser, too many technologies that aren't gaining speed. Just add a LSD. Is that difficult? Why always have to be a ricer? The TVS won't get the car any faster but seems much slippery than the RCF, maybe more weight transferred? Anyway, can't beat Vauxhall's higher cornering speed and much quicker acceleration. This is how you lose 1 second :P
