LG Washer OE Error Code - LG Washer Not Draining Fix - LG Washer Drain Pump Replacement Tutorial
Parts used in this video:
LG Replacement Pump: amzn.to/2WWKlFJ
Spring Expansion Tool: amzn.to/380UFmg
When you see the OE error message on your LG washer, that pretty much means there's something wrong with your drain pump. Mine suddenly isn't pumping water out and there's a weird noise when it should be draining. So in this video I'll walk you through detailed step-by-step instructions on how to replace the drain pump on an LG front loading washer! And I encourage you to watch the whole video before beginning your own repair so you're familiar with the process.
To start out, unplug the washer. There are two brackets in the back of the washer that need to come out. But using a short stubby Philips screwdriver helped me get these screws out even though there was very little space to work with. With both brackets out, the top off by sliding it back and lifting it off. Next slide the detergent tray out and remove it.
For the front control panel there are three screws that need to come out. The first two are at the detergent tray opening. The third screw is actually on the inside on the right. Now the front panel can be lifted off. Next keep a towel handy and open the front panel door and drain the water out of the rubber tube into a casserole dish. When all the water is out untwist the coin basket and remove the drain door. Now take out the screw that holds the inner cover on. This will just lift right out. Then take out one last screw in the sheet metal.
Now take out the retaining ring that goes around the big rubber seal. At the bottom there's a spring holding the tension of the ring. To remove it, wedge a screwdriver under the spring and start pulling the ring out of the rubber seal. Then detach the rubber seal from the opening of the washer. On the door latch remove the two screws that hold it on. This will actually detach it from the front of the washer.
Next take out the six screws holding the front of the washer on. And there's actually quite a few things that have to be removed before actually getting to the pump itself. This will be easier to see when watching the video. When the front of the washer is loose just tilt it back a bit and it can be lifted out. But be careful when grabbing it because there are definitely sharp edges on the metal.
You are now at the stage where you can access the pump. Please refer to the video for pump removal. It isn't easy to describe without visual help. When I get the pump out right away I can see that the impeller has broken completely off the pump shaft so this definitely has to be replaced. I had ordered a new pump ahead of time from Amazon and I recommend you do the same before you start your own repair.
The LG washer OE error is caused directly from a damaged pump. With a damaged pump the water won't drain out of the washer and sometimes it will create unusual sounds from inside the washer. There are wires and tubes that need to be removed which is why you'll have to watch the video for the complete repair.
The very last step in the drain pump repair is to put the retaining ring back on. And it's easily the most frustrating and most difficult part. I tried to do it by hand and using screwdrivers many times but could not get it back on. I've seen some videos that make it look easy but the spring on the ring is extremely tight. So I recommend ordering a spring expansion tool before you starting this repair. I paid $12 for it.
If I didn't have this spring expansion tool, I think it's impossible to put the ring back on without injuring fingers or damaging the rubber seal. This tool is definitely a life saver because that spring is super tight and I didn't have anything around the house that could stretch this out. In under 10 seconds with this tool the ring is back on and this repair is complete! My washer now works like normal and water is pumping out just like before. I've listed the $25 pump and $12 expansion tool at top of the description so it's easy for you to find. Hopefully you can see that this is a repair that you can actually do yourself. There's no need to call a repairman.

I wish everyone who posts "how to" videos would watch this one first! Very, very professional! Instructions were very clear, camera work and lighting were excellent, audio was excellent. You must have taken a lot of time to produce this. It was a pleasure just watching you do this project. So organized. Learned a lot from your technique. Thanks

You’re welcome! This video did take me a long time to shoot it. I wanted to show every part I was removing so it’s clear how to do this repair. I also had to stop and wait 2 days for the spring expansion tool to arrive. I initially tried to do this without the tool. Then I had to tell viewers that the tool is absolutely necessary to finish the job. Thanks for watching!

Glad you got your washer fixed! I’m actually a professional broadcast video producer. Been in television almost 30 years! But I still remember my video instructor in college say “television is the medium of close ups”. These days I say “video is the medium of close ups”. That line is one of the main factors I take into consideration when I shoot my videos. I like to show the process up close (using a macro lens if necessary) to show in detail what I’m shooting so the viewer can follow along as if they are looking through my eyes. Especially with tutorials! I want to show each step with as much detail as possible! Thanks for watching!

I just did this repair. This is absolutely one of the best "how to" videos I have ever watched and used. I could not have replaced the defective water pump in my LG washer without first watching Nico's video. My model LG washer is a WM8000HWA. I would add one additional recommendation: be sure to note (and mark) the orientation of the pump to the pump assembly before unscrewing and removing the pump itself from the assembly. This is at 5:35 of the video. On my pump assembly, the new pump can be reinstalled in a variety of different orientations so this will ensure you don't install it at the wrong angle. Don't be afraid to do this repair - this video is very accurate and makes it clear on what to do. You will save a lot of money and time. And do follow Nico's excellent hints too! Thank you.
@digitalcamproducer
@digitalcamproducer 2 года назад
Excellent advice on marking the pump orientation before removing it. I made a mention to take note of that but physically marking it with a sharpie is a fool proof method because the pump does have to be attached in a specific way. I made a mental note and I knew I had my video footage to rely on. But thanks for your tip which I’m sure will help others!

THANK YOU!!! This gave me the confidence to try it on my own. The fear of what we don't know is what holds us back from trying to do things on our own and coming to know how to do it ourselves. It was as easy as it looks, except for a stripped screw, (probably from a previous repair man), that I had to get off with some patience and time. I was able to get the pump switched out by myself, with the help of my daughter, which brought us together and also taught her how to do something I wasn't taught as a kid, which is how to fix our own things. Thank you for being a teacher and showing others how to do this. The confidence gained to do something unknown is the biggest thing gained.

Thank you, thank you!! We had a service man come out, but he didn't have the replacement pump and told us to order it on Amazon and he'd come back to install it. I must pay him for coming out to assess the machine and to thank him for providing the part number required, but since I had to wait for the part I went on RU-vid to assess the installation process and found your video along with several others. I must commend you on the detailed instructions and outstanding video your put up. I decided to attempt the installation, purchased the spring extender you recommended, and replaced the pump myself in a couple of hours with my wife managing the screws. Thank you so much for this video! For the past week or so during the drain cycle, my washer was making a terrible grinding noise. It would finish the cycle, but this morning with a load full of laundry, I got the dreaded OE message. I had already known about this video before it actually stopped working (I'm anal that way) and I was fortunate that a local parts supply place had the pump in stock along with the spring tool. I'm 65 years old, and in the past seven years it seems as though my washer had glued itself to the floor. Moving the washer into a position to work on it was the most difficult thing for me. Your tutorial was perfect, and it only took me about 2 hours to do the repair once I started working. 10 stars, and 20 thumbs up for this help! I'm now kicking back enjoying a celebratory Scotch👍🍻👍 Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I should've watched this video first before ordering the drain pump. None of the other videos mention the spring clamp tool. My replacement pump came with an O-ring, but I didn't see you replace one. As others have already mentioned, you're camera work is what separates your videos from others. You actually SHOW what you're doing in a close up.

Yeah I didn’t have to deal with an O-ring on my pump. I literally took it out of the box as-is and installed it. I appreciate you noticing my camera work! Seriously the most helpful repair video I've ever watched. Took me less than an hour. If you don't want to or just plain didn't by the spring ring tool, an alternative is two sets of hands and a bike tire lever. Have one person hold the ring really tightly at the furthest locations you can get it to by hand and the other person start at one and slowly run the tire lever along the ring. Worked for me after a half dozen tries.

This video was brilliant. I managed to get the entire job completed by following the steps illustrated here. Upon re-assembly I didn't have the spring spreader tool. I determined that if the left side spring is in place over the gasket it will stay in place. You can then stretch the right side of the spring with a screwdriver, then guide the wire into place by hand on the right side without any issue. Just make sure that the retaining wire is inserted as best as possible all the way around the gasket. Then only about the last 1/3 of the wire to the right of the spring needs tucking in. This video is very clear and self explanatory. I saved quite a few bucks in repair cost to spend on myself following this guide. 😁

Thank you so much! This is one of the best tutorials I've seen! Notes I learned from taking mine apart: 1. the door switch plug is easy to get to once you undo the screws and lean it down toward you, then you can get a hand from the side and the top. 2. For the spring I just used some needle nose and stretched the spring really far, then just rolled the wire over the edge, it was super easy and doable. 3. Plug the wires in while the motor is out and you can see it clearly, I first installed then plugged and didn't get the contacts to connect and bent a lead which caused some unnecessary work. Again, great tutorial, thank you for giving me the confidence to DIY!

You can get away without the spring stretching tool, if you have two relatively strong people applying pressure on the retaining ring at about the 7:00-8:00 positions, and 4:00-5:00 positions. That will allow you to reseat the ring rather easily with a screwdriver. Took us only two attempts to get it. Fantastic video, BTW!

@Ann Good to know. I was looking for another option like cutting off the spring and replacing it with an elastic connector or something more forgiving. Something that could fit in the groove and e strong enough to provide resistance. I’ll leave it off for now until I find a better option.

Excellent job describing the process! Regarding the ring installation, I was able to get the ring back on using two bike tire levers. It’s a little finicky but possible. The expansion tool is probably an easier method. But in a pinch, the tire levers will work. Just get the ring started on the top half. Place two tire levers in the 4 and 8 o’clock positions. Place pressure toward the machine on the levers and wiggle them down to the bottom and push the spring over the ring retaining lip. Thanks for the video!

Note: BEFORE STARTING THIS REPAIR BUY THE SPRING EXPANSION TOOL!!! This a really good video but the author states in the beginning there is a trick to getting the ring back on and says he will tell you later. If you don’t watch the entire video before starting you will not know that you need a specific tool. This tool took me a week to get on Amazon leaving everything in pieces. Not a huge deal but if I had known I needed specific tools I would have waited to start the project. Other than that this was super helpful and saved me a bunch of money. I was able to clean hoses and drains, clean the dispenser tray and I removed the entire gasket and cleaned it (these will be cleaned frequently for now on as they are mold farms). Who knows all the other areas mold grows on a high-end LG front loader but wow!!! Not sure if I would buy it again. Thanks for the video!

Yes! Sorry I didn’t mention the spring tool right from the beginning! It should definitely be ordered at the same time as when the pump is ordered. I think I did the video in the order of how I did my repair because I didn’t have the spring tool originally and had to wait until the tool arrived. I was advising viewers to watch the whole video first so they are familiar with the whole repair process before they start. I tried everything to get that last spring on without the tool and then realized I really needed it. At least for me it was 2 day shipping. But I’m really glad you got your washer working again! The Spring Expansion tool was a life saver and made my final step of reassembly a breeze. I struggled with the bolts on the for literally a couple hours, getting them out and then back in. The bolts just didn't come out, eventually I had to pry out with a screwdriver because the rubber feet had got stuck or affixed in place. Then the base wouldn't tighten down when reinstalled. Your video gave me confidence to try changing out the pump and I was glad my LG ventless washer dryer combo had almost identical steps. I echo everyone else's comments about the quality and the helpfulness of this video. The only bits of constructive criticism I have are: 1) It wasn't clear (to me) that you need to position the manual drain hose through the hole in the front panel before attaching the mounting bracket, and 2) It would be helpful to warn novices (like me) to be aware about when they are tightening screws into metal versus plastic. I wasn't paying attention and I think I overtightened the three screws that hold the drain pump bracket to the bottom of the washer. I was waiting for the screws to get real tight but apparently they are screwed into plastic and they never got very tight so I probably stripped all three of the holes. I hope the bracket will stay secure! Thanks for this great video and I hope my comments are helpful to others.

Excellent work around for the spring! And I know zip ties can hold things tight! Nice work!
