There is currently no effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. EEG recordings have shown that gamma frequency electrical oscillations are diminished and aberrant excitatory glutamatergic neurotransmission is increased in the brain’s of people with Alzheimer’s disease. In this episode MIT Professor Li-Huei Tsai talks about her discovery that gamma frequency (40 Hz) light and sound stimulation can enhance GABAergic inhibitory tone, ameloriate the disease process, and preserve cognition in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. This research led to initial phase I and II clinical trials of gamma light and sound stimulation in Alzheimer’s disease with encouraging results. A large phase III trial is in progress.

Appreciative of these indepth conversations, and keeping us, the general public, with access to some latest neural research! I am not sure if you have them, but with broad ranging discussions, time stamps would (also) be very highly appreciated. Some of us are looking for the kernels of potentially applicable directions for more immediate (potential) medical/personal application. Thanks so much for all of both of your work. (Mark, if you are reading this, do you know how one can access 40 hz devices (sound and/or light) w/ instructions as to reasonable places to park these diodes/electrodes/whatever? Am all ears, in the prevention of further deterioration phase here - inflammatory processes)

Thank you for the interesting conversation! I enjoyed so much in both science and history here.

It was a very informative dicussion! Thank you professor! It's inspiring to see you promote brain research in a different way, even after your retirement!! Similar to Feynman lectures on physics.
