I'm from Ireland and the phenomenon of libertarianism is practically non existent here. I'm interested in politics though and so I've read a few bits and pieces on the web; Wikipedia, manifesto summaries etc. and I've watched a few clips of that famous interview with Ayn Rand. So I feel that I have a general idea of it and when I picture a libertarian in my head I think of Rand or Ron Paul on the less insane side and militias in the mountains on the crazier side. Not until this frightening yet hilarious extended train wreck of an election season though have I come across this younger generation of libertarians and WOW ... They are uniformly idiotic to a man, I'm honestly shocked because I had though it's kind of a nerdy ( as in smart nerdy ) position, Penn of Penn and Teller is a libertarian and I agree with him on many things to do with scepticism etc. But man oh man - turns out it's not a smart nerdy position it's a position of one of the saddest creatures on earth ; the idiot nerd!!

I wish these Libertarian callers would search Sam's videos over the years on him debating Libertarianism and unless they have something new to add, don't just bore us with your same old argument. How narcissistic does one have to be to think that they can change Sam's mind using the same old argument? This caller was boring too.

it's quite difficult to glean the general premise of the philosophy of libertarianism from the proponents, other than a vague allusion to the concept of freedom,A freedom devoid of consideration or concern for a cohesive society.

I’ve watched probably 20 of these videos of libertarians claiming that they are there to set the record straight about libertarians. Also “this one libertarian didn’t understand TRUE libertarianism.” I’m just wondering how many times they’re going to have to watch Sam destroy libertarians before they realize their ideology is fundamentally flawed?? Watching these debates really makes me appreciate the education I got in high school. I actually learned about Karen Silkwood and stuff like that, but apparently, a lot of people didn't.

I admit this guy was less of a prick than all the others who got flustered and either hung up on Sam or got on their accounts to throw some childish tantrum here. Again, these people can never seem to get out of their own headspaces to look at that the larger picture. They are just too obsessed with abstractions and pretend scenarios. Then there is the, "You are libertarian, as well. I am just more libertarian than you. This country was founded on libertarian principles. All the founding fathers were libertarians." The caller isn't a libertarian that most other libertarians could get along with. Policies are what counts. Take abstinence only education. The parents who support that claim that teaching proper sex ed encourages teens to start sexual relationships earlier, but facts point to that comprehensive sex ed both delayes sexual activity and decreases the number of teenage pregnancies and STDs. But the reason to believe counterfactuals is religious, not pragmatic or fact based. History shows that what libertarians advocate is chaos, sort of a Hobbesian nightmare because like Randian objectivism, it's elevation of pure selfishness above any solution with empathy.

Maybe Libertarian is code for some type of secret performance art, like a secret initiation rite among improv comics. Because they're all so hilariously insane.

Mmh. Bold move by the caller to ask if there is evidence that societies that permit the burying of uranium are better or worse off. I have to admit that I haven't done that much research on this, but just as a kneejerk guess, I'm going to say that it's probably a fairly universally poor idea to allow uranium to be buried. I guess that makes me a ...tyrannical statist?

There IS an idealistic alternative to monopoly of force or constant civil war. If you could firmly enough establish a universal value of cooperation, force wouldn't be necessary, and there would be no cause for war. Edit: I recognize you'd probably need post-scarcity to have any chance of that, but I don't think it's a binary state between here and true post-scarcity. We could get much closer, and need much less force, if not none. It may even be a fallacy to assume a continuous linear relationship between how close we need to be to post-scarcity and what humans specifically as what we are would actually need to come together in this kind of universal way. Like, maybe our threshold for that is lower than post-scarcity because of some facts about us as organisms and as a civilization. I'm an imaginative optimist - what can I say?

This position is pretty unique actually, I've never heard an Libertarian that is okay with public property before. Most of them seem to think that the meer existence of public property is an infringement on the rights of the hypothetical private owner who should be owning it instead. It rather seems like the logical conclusion of the argument that it's okay to violate the non-aggression principle in the case of public property is to abolish private property. He seems very interested in efficiency though, to him the question of socialism vs capitalism rests primarily on which is better at producing wealth and goods, rather than which is ethically better. I think Sam did a disservice to the listeners not prodding this guy more because he's actually got something of a nuanced position unlike almost every other self identified Libertarian.

Anything that is actually good about Libertarianism is not exclusive to Libertarianism alone.

Weirdly, until the early 20th century, officers in most of the worlds armies had to equip and pay their own soldiers... that was the point of people living on a nobles land had to pay a tax to their landowner. Just FYI... we pay MUUUUUCH less tax these days than we did when we had to pay our landowners (which was closer to 100%).

Saying he's more libertarian than you isn't a religious idea... that's how political spectrums work, there's multiple factors including the authoritarian-libertarian scale.

We need the government to use aggression to stop people from poisoning the ground because the government coercively taxes us to pay for cleaning up polluted sites. Therefore go to jail if you can’t or won’t pay for endless foreign wars. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Don’t justify one wrong thing by pointing to another wrong thing.

A monopoly of force should have the strictest limits on when that force can be used and should be minimised and force should never be used to force a political opinion on to someone who don't believe it, there should be no consequences for free thought and free speech outside of inciting actually physical violenceand slander else guess what it's not free, ideas need to stand up to debates and facts it's not right to bully, gang up and silence people which way too much of that is happening.

What these Libertarians fail to realize is that reducing agression is not a good per se. That is, we don't like aggression because it reduces the quality of our lives. The real goal is to improve the quality of our lives. That is what we are trying to do by reducing aggression. However, in the real world there are many other ills that also reduce quality of life. And it can be true that by permitting some aggression we can structure society in such a way where quality of life is higher. For example disease causes a lot of suffering. Yet by far the most efficient way to address public health concerns like disease is to collectivize and pool resources to provide for public health. But we need taxes to do this. But as long as the suffering reduced by increasing public health is greater than the suffering imposed by a government taking a portion of people's incomes then society is better off. That's an example where we are better off by permitting aggression. Libertarians are just confused about what is actually important. Freedom is good because it allows us to make the best choices to improve our lives. But in a world with scarce resources and many threats to our lives we are often better off sacrificing personal freedoms to cooperate with other people and improve our lives collectively.

Sam. Do you believe Johnson/Weld are as far off the tracks as the more radical elements of the Libertarian party? From what I can tell, the current Libertarian candidates for president and vice president are credible guys.
