This makes me feel better about having a hard time finishing things! I’m a perfectionist with terrible anxiety. I drive my mother nuts as I draft patterns off stuff I see or based off traditional things I’m reading about. I really want one of those funny irons for crafting… the things I could do with the movability. 😜

I collect antique Japanese Ichimatsu dolls and sometimes need to sew new furisode for them- I’m not very good at it but this video has given me some good tips, thank you!

What a collection! If replacing the dress diminishes the value of the doll. Then my suggestion is to match the fabric and repair over the damage. I do this for quilts.

Thank you for showing such a nice video. I like how it shows how unique the Kimono is even down to how it is constructed. If it is ok with you may I suggest a video idea? A video discussing 100 years of Kimono trends, for example starting in the 1850s when Japan first re-opened its ports to international trade ( and also foreign influences) to the 1950s. Though of course, it is up to you which decades you want to incorporate and which decade you want to start and end the video. It would just be so interesting to hear it from a certified instructor. You may have insights that the general public may not know about the topic. Like what hairstyles and accessories were popular for each of these decades and how each decade has its own unique style and fabric print with a very iconic garment such as the Kimono

I used your texhnic to make one out of wool. You are right about the collar .. it is finicky work. My local Joannes loved it. I wore it during a heavy snowfall and it was warmer than a down coat. Love your teachng.

The Japanese sewing irons are available in the states but marketed to quilters. They are just smaller and called Clover mini iron II. Probably a ailable in other regions as long as Clover is available there.

You were talking about books only being in Japanese and it being a barrier to learning… I’m learning how to make Temari but all the books are in Japanese… so I had them shipped over and I’m reading them through my phone using the Google Translate app. It works for many languages too, not just English and Japanese. It’s cumbersome… but where there’s a will, there’s a way 😜 😂👍 Thank you so much for your videos and what you are doing to bring the culture and a measure of equality to available information ❤️❤️

Thanks to your channel i was able to make a haori (with some nice wool, so it's keeping me warm in the winter) and a kimono. I am proud of how both of these turned out, bc i was able to focus my attention on making the hems and inner seams very nicely, thanks to your through instructions☺️ thank you for sharing your knowledge! Franzl fighting with the pincushion was quite funny, how animals have their internal logic and motives for mischief! Reminded me of my cat, who for some reason likes to steal pins from me. To prevent this i had to transform some matryoshka dolls i had laying around into cute pincushions that can be closed when im not using them.

Kimonos honestly look like youve left the house wearing your bed sheets but in the best way possible. They look so comfortable but I cant imagine them being breezy in the hot sticky summer weather.

OMG! I LOVE the colour of your kimono! I also am very thrilled to have seen this through from end to end, as if gives me a better understanding of the two kimono I have right now, and how to make my own in the future (though I plan on using your easy tutorial first before even attempting this). It would have been helpful if you had shown the inside of the finished kimono. But other then that it was an amazing video. About 40 years ago I made some kimono from diagrams I had in a book. But I used western sewing techniques and a sewing machine to do it because there were no instructions. This was so very different that I was very confused in many places. I will have to find your other video. However those irons are just amazing and want some.

I'm looking forward for the other projects that you are working on. It seems exhausting to sew a kimono by hand. But I'm learning to appreciate more the handmade second hand kimonos that I have and also want, maybe when I'll be more confident, to adapt an old one to my size with the uchiage if there are some. Ramie is a natural fabric coming from the Old East. Ramie has a cellulose fibre, obtained through a complex extraction process, which makes it an expensive and premium fabric. Its fibres are obtained from Boehmeria nivea and utilis plants: white ramie is obtained from the first, while green ramie from the second. These plants grow especially in China and Malaysia, where they were used in the past to make clothes.

Hi Billy I am English from Manchester (pronounced man_ chest _a) we now live in Wigan and some people have a very broad accent that non of us can understand. I love your videos and they have given me a boost to do something very different crafts. I knit, sew, crochet a little but fell head over heels for the little balls you made for you Christmas tree. The fabric is gorgeous, you are a delight to watch and listen to, and the kimono looks so beautifully made and flattering on you! I also can't wait to see more kimono sewing videos in the future, not that i would be able to tell how much progress you are making, but just because I want to see more of your beautiful videos! Maybe you could also make a quick one to explain why you kept in the basting, and how long to keep it folded after you make it (if you don't have an event to go to right the next day after you finish it! :) ) I'm wondering, if it is ramie/cotton, will you be cleaning it probably more often than just every couple of years. When you do, do you have to unstitch it, like for the silk kimono? Do you hand wash them, or can you even throw one in the washing machine?

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! I have a couple Japanese style bolts that have been sitting in a closet because I wasn't exactly sure how to use them. But now that I've watched this I feel comfortable enough to try and make my own kimono! I am curious, if my bolt is 55% polyester(🙄) and 45% Remi(?) Would I still use the mizutōshi technic you used to prepare my fabric? Thank you again! 😊

Unfortunately I don’t have a formular, because the obi length that works best for you depends on how and how efficient you can tie your obi. I’ve many plus sizes students and with everyone of them I’m working with very different methods and items.

it is interesting that you don't wash the fabrics, only really soak & rinse. there is no soap involved. is this because traditionally it would be done in rivers? or am I have i just been pre washing my fabric the wrong way this whole time? lol. also how do you take care of kimono? I live in the US & can only afford second hand & vintage pieces, I always wanted to get them cleaned but I am so afraid to take them to a rando dry cleaner ;v;

I’m intrigued by the fact you said hemp is illegal. My kyudo teacher told me my strings are made of hemp (actually he said mar***ana but I corrected him to hemp) because it’s the stronger than synthetic. I must research more…

There are a few hemp farms in Japan, so it’s not completely illegal - meaning there are still ways to produce it. And they really rare. And those farmers must have a ton of bureaucracy to fight with, too 😪

Sometimes Japanese laws get in the way of traditional crafts (which ironically laws also try to protect).

No. Wool, polyester, cotton and ramie kimono (!!!) do exist.

Can you try to focus on the exact step by step to the construction of the garment. All the extra words make it confusing. I could not follow the steps you showed. I am an experienced seamstress.
