You are definitely not alone with this. I just came back from Korea too, I studied abroad there for one semester. I was ready to talk about my experience over there because I had so much fun and also I was so proud of myself for moving abroad on my own. I definitely felt like I couldn't talk about my experience.. some friends didn't give me the space and some others quickly changed the subject to them making me feel like I was talking too much about my experience when in reality, looking back, I barely shared anything. And so I did just like you, I waited for people to ask me questions about it... but nobody did, it made me feel like I've accomplished nothing, like the last few months meant nothing. It's such a weird feeling... I want to talk about my experience but I don't want to force it into conversation in fear it'll make me come off as pretentious. So, yea, I just shut up which is sad really...I only spent half a year in Korea, that's not a lot but still I have so much to say. So I can only imagine how much you experienced in 3 years over there, it's truly amazing!!

That’s because your friends are selfish, self-centered narcissists. How could anybody not be interested in your time spent in Korea? American society is self-absorbed and solipsistic in nature - -not your fault.

I don't think you are reading too much into it. Identify the friends and family that also share your love for travel, your love for change, your love for growth... It is often hard when we realize that us caring about others and wanting to share things with them does not guarantee that they will have that same appreciation and/or interest. Avoid taking it personally or internalizing it, and recognize that you will need a travel friend/family buddy that enjoys what you enjoy. ***That person, or those individuals, won't brush you off or make you feel like a braggart for being excited about your experiences.

I went through the same thing after coming back from studying abroad along with the reverse culture shock a couple years ago. Sometimes it felt like I was bragging but no, that was my lived experience that I wanted to share. There will be those who are excited about hearing about them and those who can't identify with what you have lived and dear I say might be envious. You have lived a wonderful chapter that a lot of your peers will never ever see. Cherish your experiences. They helped got me through the pandemic.

100% relate to no one wanting to hear it. I spent a year in the Uk and came back to the US and struggled with that one a lot. I had a friend study in Korea - same thing. My entire friend group shifted after that as well and I naturally shifted to others with similar experiences. Ive been personally thinking this would be the hardest part in returning to the US - that feeling like years of your life don’t matter to anyone and no one relating.

Just wanted to add..my advice is find people who will listen. It might not be everyone but someone who just gets you need that. It makes a world of difference!

definitely having a support system of people that have experienced the same or similar situations as you is so helpful, and really helped me in my transition moving back. omg i can't imagine how it would be for you, i know you've been in korea for a long time 🥲😭

@@heyitsanne Hahaha yea, but I feel very fortunate to have experienced reverse culture shock before because I can anticipate it, and remember what it was like. That in turn shapes my decision to go home, and helps me plan for a better transition.

Welcome back!!! And no I felt the same way when I went to Beijing and came back and it was like "oh okay we get it!" so I rarely talk about it unless its with other people who travel and things like that. And yes culture shock is definitely hard when you been away that long but I hope everything gets better for you!

Always loved watching your journey in SK. As a black woman who is afraid of solo-traveling, seeing all you did acomplished was such a great source of inspiration. Keep the vlogs coming, SK, Mexico, US, your daily life, whatever i will definitely stick around 😌🥰

So good to see you back before the camera and bringing us up to date on your life back home again. Don't worry that not everyone wants to hear about your time in Korea. Not everyone is interested in other countries/cultures and don't want to travel. Some who are interested feel a little envious of your experience. Just find your tribe wherever you are - that group of people who you vibe with and who vibe with you. They will want to know every day of your Korean experience, and they will share their own experiences with you. Just find your people.

I'm glad to see a video update. Watching your time in MX on IG has been exciting. Keep sharing your experience and stories of living abroad. Your story is inspiring, and someone else is going to find in meaningful while naysayers stay salty. I hope your life in MX is enjoyable and that you are happy and at peace.

Hello! I came across your videos to prepare for my work trip to Korea. Definitely understand about the culture shock. I live in TX too, when I left for Singapore(3 weeks), I didn’t want to come back. The states are….fine but having a government that cares for its citizens is wonderful. People care about the environment, there are healthier food options, heck a reliable transport system does wonders… I get it, traveling is wonderful and definitely a privilege. I’m glad you are traveling again! Thank you for updating us! Have fun in MXDF!!!!

Welcome back 💕💕🥰💕💕 Edit: It sounds to me like you should be sharing your experiences in Korea with different people, instead of NOT talking about them due to ppl who aren’t receptive. Connect with those who actually want to hear what you have to say. These other people obviously feel some type of way about your life abroad. Anytime I’ve experienced that, at the root of it, they wished THEY had been able to do what I did. If that’s the same for those around you, ultimately it isn’t your problem, cause you’re not there to manage other peoples feelings like that. Share with us here lol 💕🥰We’re here for it ☺️💕

I know my time in Korea is finite and will come to an end soon in the next 1-2 years and by then, I will have been gone 4-5 years. Like you, I got a taste of the things you mentioned when I visited home in January of 2022 but also when I studied abroad back in college. Anyways, these are all things I keep in the back of my mind as my time here comes to a close, especially the sharing my life for the past couple of years. If everyone can talk about their lived experience, why can’t I? Anyways, thanks for talking about this!

Before I came back I had heard from other teachers who returned to their home countries who felt like they couldn't talk about their time abroad. I was afraid that would happen to me too so I was prepared for it. I'm really lucky that I have been back for almost 2 years (what the heck!) and still talk about it and don't feel like I annoy people. But I am sorry that people in your life make you feel that way. You shouldn't have to filter what you talk about with people -- your experiences are worth sharing. I still do the two handed giving/receiving thing except I use the alternative method which is placing one hand on my elbow so thankfully it's not as noticeable but I don't know if that will ever go away lol. I do the clapping while laughing thing but I am pretty sure I did that prior to living in Korea. I hope the rest of your adjustment period goes well! I think it took me 9-12 months to really feel fully adjusted so don't feel bad if you still are having some hard times. I look forward to where your channel is headed!

thank you so much, erica! i can't believe it was just 2 years ago when you left, time flies by so fast!!!! i'm so glad to hear you have great people around you that support you and want to listen to you and your experiences. and yeah, i don't think korean mannerisms will ever leave me 😂

I also don't think you are reading into it. I just came back from Korea too and I also decided to not talk about it too much unless someone asks because I just feel like the conversation gets stale. I don't think its intentional for friends and family to make it seem like they don't want to hear about it. I think there is a bit of unintentional envy. Maybe I am also reading into it wrong too. I also found that its hard to explain to people whats next in my life. I sometimes feel like those around me are curious to what I will do next but not in a genuine sense but rather wanting to know how I will catch up to the progress they made while I was away. Anyway, I feel like this also might all be in my head and I just have to live my life and journey no matter what people think.

Hi Ann, I’m sad to hear that you are no longer in Korea. I’m excited for your future. I’ve been following your channel for some time now. I’ve also been considering teaching in Korea for a while now. I may have missed it but what made you decide to move back to the US?

That’s not how you use toner. Toner is used with a cotton pad to wipe it on your face. It isn’t a lotion. It’s used to remove leftover dirt and soap from the face after washing as well as depositing trace elements from the toner.

That feeling of over-talking about your time in Korea... I feel that 100%. I just returned to the US from teaching in Korea for 2 years in Feb, too. You just wanna share all the stuff you went thru, and there are so many things you are reminded of or wanna compare. But it is true, it always feels like people who didn't share a certain experience with you just don't feel as engaged in those stories. It does kinda suck because there is so much you want to reflect on, but you feel annoying bringing it up. I also feel super self-aware / self-conscious when I talk about Korea. Speaking with other friends that have lived in Korea and have moved back definitely feels like a weight off your shoulders, cause they just understand. There are many things I miss about Korea, but also things I wanna keep developing and working towards back here in the US. It's bittersweet haha. Thanks for this update video, I relate so much!
