Finally - after 5+1 cut off lists - Delhi University has kicked off its classed (although still online)...this year the percentage madness peaked with some colleges requiring a 100% marks in Boards for admissions. But beyond this madness - HOW MUCH is a College Degree worth and what does it do for those who have this degree??? Will be start valuing SKILLS more or still be stuck with our fascination with 'Degrees'
A personal journey as well.

This makes total sense. I always tell my juniors to focus on skill development rather than degrees. I'm Bcom graduate (2011 batch), now working as a Microsoft solution architect, in the first year itself I understood that commerce is not the field for me, but continued it because without a degree I won't get my first job. I started learning html and c# online, then slowly moved into server based technologies, upon clearing my graduation (47% in tybcom) I worked as a network engineer, got CCNA certification. Upon parental pressure joined MCA, the syllabus was so outdated that I left the class midway. Joined Wipro right after that and got trained in Business Intelligence Applications. Again because of parental pressure joined Excise Department, it was such an eye opener for me, it tested my patience to such an extent that I quit during my probation and went straight to an IT company and kept on updating my skills. Long story short, please focus on your passion and keep updating yourself, degrees are only for telling people that you are a graduate or a post graduate, it will help you to get your first job, that's it, doesn't matter which degree, what college or university (except the blacklisted ones). It's the skill that matters. One of my colleagues is a Hotel Management graduate and he's a solution architect. There are many stories like these. Please share this video with everyone. Mr Banerjee is doing a fantastic job.

I appeared for JEE without much preparation and thought of an year drop, but I got into a good college(not IIT) within close proximity of myself with Electrical Engineering as my stream. Not boasting or something but now I am in my 4th year and I have 4 job offers as a software engineer which is not related to my stream. As someone who hire and manages teams of web developers (both Backend and Frontend) across multiple regions and multiple businesses both inside and outside India, I totally agree with this analysis of lack of skill sets that really impacts a starter/junior coming into the industry. I really do not think a Uni degree has that much of an attraction to hiring managers/recruiters (like myself), in contrast I focus on the fundamental soft skills that shows ones ability to provide continuous contribution towards a success of a business/team. Upskilling is not a good to have, but is now fast becoming a major requirement in any workplace, given the speed of technological and industrial changes occurring across the board. Even local businesses and vendors had to adapt to internet, mobile technologies, web technologies and working online & remote, to meet consumer and market expectations. So if you do not upskill yourself in todays day and age, specially outside a Uni degree, then you will struggle to remain relevant to the market.

I want to share my life story. I have written my 10th exam almost 9 times including my supplement exam. Finally I got cleared and joined a PUC college. I got throughout of college due to my bad attitude. And joined second PUC in other college and same got failed in all the subjects. I was fully depressed sad thinking about my life. And then luckily mom advised me sun dont worry. Your education or your marks will not decide you faith and future. Your skills and talent matter. Then I decided to join a computer course in jetking. I joined and developed my computer skills. And know I'm a IT manager👨‍💼 in TAJ HOTEL. the sad part is still my friends are struggling to find a job and few are kept backlogs in the degree. Degrees are not that important, but they are not useless as well. It depends on what your aspirations are. If you want to be in IT, a software developer, programmer, videographer, photographer, graphic designer, etc., you don't need a degree. But if you want to get into medical field, research, or government jobs, you need a degree. In some cases, you need a bachelors degree to even be eligible to apply. For example, when you're applying for a long term work visa for a job in foreign countries. Even if the company that hired you didn't require you to have a degree, you'll need to show your bachelors degree to the embassy of that country to apply for the work visa. So for people who want to settle and work abroad, a degree is a necessity for them. But ultimately, how far you can go in your chosen career will depend on your skills in the long run.

There are some extremely serious issues here which everybody is trying to be blind to. If so many are getting more than 90%, I would just like to know how many of the teachers (involved in all this process) are so competent, knowledgeable, experienced? The system has got into a near-rut by virtue of having focussed so much on 'Rote Learning' and for so long. Large number of those having scored more than 90%, if put to test of 'Analytical Ability', could miserably fail. Quite serious issue everyone is pretending to be blind to.

Have you noticed most of the global Indian CEOs are in software companies. Also the skills mentioned in this video are software skills. As electronics engineers we feel like outsiders in LinkedIn. Online resources for this field are so limited. Electronics is one of the fastest growing sector in western countries and China but we are left behind because of too much theoretical syllabus and outdated curriculum.
