Oli, you were interviewing perhaps the most hard working generation of all time in China. Most of them came from the poorest/most underdeveloped areas of the country to big cities and hope to leave their marks. They worked through all kinds of harshest conditions so that their children would have much better lives. They never complained. Just worked harder. These are the true heros of the China miracle that we came to know. Thanks for showing their everyday life to the bigger audience.

Paying one cent means the workers are buying it using their hard earned money and thus not a beggar. That is why they still need to pay, to maintain the workers dignity. Also to give those receiving that they cannot take it for granted. It is a psychological thing. The Chinese understand this very well.

This CONCEPT was introduced by the govn to " Respect and Reward " those working class groups that many people would NOT work in. Street cleaners is one of this group. Sanitation workers , Parks manitenance, River maintenance, etc . Hard Work under the SKY irrespective of WEATHER or SEASON. ...... Recently...Insurance coverage was introduced including better pension, health care, etc for these groups on workers.

China as a whole really respect their workers. That is the main reason why people are passionate about their work. I am not saying that people don't look down on some jobs and look up on other jobs. It happens in all societies. But Chinese are generally respect other people doing their jobs. And people doing their jobs do not feel bad about doing the jobs they chose, based on economic or education situations. They believe in hard work and the result of hard work. So society respects them and they respect themselves, thus the passion.

Thank you Oli! First it is amazing to see restaurants (more than one) offering a free meal per week! Workers feel appreciated and they do take proud of their work. Second, it is right for you to bring up: most of the workers from other provinces will eventually go back home with a new house (since they have made money and sent half back home to support the family and build a new house or two) A good retirement after decades of hard work. That is how poverty is eliminated.

Hi, Oli, since I'm working online doing translation, I check out your Barrett channel daily and tonight, (well, it's already the next morning) I'm quite awed by this unusual video clip that you've shared. Yes, it's rather atypical of the clips you upload but it's interesting in its own way and very heart-warming. Thanks, again. I've been to Shenzhen once, for 3 days and I love it there. The park there, 东湖公园, East Lake Park, is awesome. The streets are so clean, you could almost walk around barefoot. I like the story in this one and I'm sharing it with friends and relatives. Well done! Keep up the good work and thank you for doing this, i.e. telling the world this side of China which the world should know. 谢谢,祝工作顺利,身体健康,My prayers for you dad's speedy recovery! So different parts of society come together, forming a positive social environment for respect for street cleaners. In doing so, corporations show social responsibility, ie, Tencent here in this story, building & enhancing a good public reputation; the restaurants receiving cleaners in uniform, a good advertisement for showing they are a social responsible business. That is how 'political correctness' should be.

OMG. I love your vlog so much, especially the one that is so sentimental and positive energy to inspire others who come from the same background as these street cleaners. I like the fact that you actually put efforts in making vlog to show most ordinary working class people in China rather than flash and rich and well to doing people in China. This video also shows the openness and fairness of the new Chinese society. What a society to work for and to live in. This is a fantastic vlog. Keep coming and we keep watching.

1 cent meal.... wow!!! This video warms the heart. China is a caring society. It’s not just the cost of the meal, it’s also the opportunity cost the restaurant has to bear. This also speaks volumes about the general public’s acceptance of the cleaners’ presence in the restaurants, no wonder they are happy workers. And to charge 1 cent, a token sum, instead of giving a free meal also gives the recipients some sense of dignity. This also a good way for the restaurants to account for the meals being given away and prevents an errant worker from selling away free meals

What goes out will come around and these generous restaurants need not worry about having no business for as long as they do their part for society. This video really warms the heart.

This is an excellent idea for a series showing the daily lives of the ordinary person going about their daily lives. Best way to break down perceived barriers of people who have never been to China to understand that people everywhere have more things in common than they think. The street cleaners may appear to do lowly work but there is dignity in their work. Kudos for showing a glimpse of it.
