Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Daryl Steurmer, Danny Gillen, and Steve Jones describe their experiences working with Phil Collins. Taken from the "Phil Collins: a Life Less Ordinary" DVD.
Genesis would’ve never survived if Phil Collins didn’t take over as , drummer, front man lead singer, songwriter, musician & actor. Peter Gabriel did a great job going solo on his own. There all awesome.
You are spot on. Genesis's career had been completely extended thanks to Phil's expanded involvement. He breathed new energy into lyrical content and they fed off of his solo success. Much like Yes and how Trevor Rabin saved them, Genesis would have fizzled out going into the 80s without Phil
Phil Collins was fabulous, his voice amazing and one of the best ever and his musical skills sublime...his showmanship great with a british sense of humour and a nice guy. His lyrics meaningful. He worked so hard and was gracious and generous. I hope he throws the detractors away. We loved him. Still do. Just a fan.
Phil Collins is an incredible drummer who at that time deserved to stay sat comfortable behind his kit. But He had the cojones then to stand-up and walk forward. Away from his comfort zone to become the next front-man for the band and for their greater success. Kudos to Phil Collins and to the band Genesis.
Yeah Phil is the man on the drums and singing sorry but to me genesis vocal wise much better with Collins not Gabriel so beyond overrated. Don't get the big Gabriel fan base at all.
@@amandabooth7399 I think I like Peter for the ideas rather than his Genesis vocals. I think Peter had a better voice on his solo stuff later on. That's why I suppose I love the way Phil sang some of Peter's songs on Seconds Out like Supper's Ready and Cinema Show. When I hear another band do those, I think of the Seconds Out versions as comparisons and I miss Phil's voice on them.😂 Though there are some songs like Musical Box that only Peter could do.
Peter, Phil and the guys were always friends, in fact, they helped out Peter in the early 80s. That people here debate and fight over Peter vs. Phil reveals more about the people than the band.
I recently saw a video of Peter touting great friendship with Phil and that Phil had absolutely nothing to do with Peter's leaving. Can't argue when it comes from the horse's mouth! 👍
💙 One of the reasons I love Phil is that he's such a perfectionist too! LOL There's nothing wrong with knowing what (and how) you want it and making it happen!! EVERY true artist does that!! You CAN'T let the "good enough" people interfere with YOUR vision!! 👍👏 🤜🤛 💙👑Phil🥰 Alllwaaays 😘
why is everyone all for Peter gabriel? all my favourite songs by genesis are sang by Phil. What a talent to play drums n go to vocals aswell. give him a much deserved break
Indeed, in fact besides England and USA fans nobody got a clue about Genesis before Collins. He gave the band the popularity and the best songs no doubt about it.
So little emotion in Phil, just a big arrogant bout of "I'm the greatest" and no humility what so ever. Bland compared to Peter, but an amazing drummer and backing singer to Peter for sure.
Phil u r so awesome in the air tonight has special meaning to me and it deals well with someone that has been hurt very badly by a stranger that they had to testify against. thank you for this song it helped me to go on with my life
Wow, everyone here is so upset. Is it wrong to like both Peter Gabriel's years (Prog), and the Phil Collins' years (more mainstream rock)? I like both and Phil's solo work, so sue me. I never could get into Peter's solo work though. Nursery Cryme my favorite Genesis album. The band members are over it, so why can't we all just enjoy the music? Peace everyone.
Yeah that's it. Enjoy the music. For me I do like Peter's solo stuff albums 3, 4 and 4. Especially San Jacinto. I liked it when he got the most "progressive" with sampling, etc. Then I also love ITAT and Against All Odds. It's like song by song for me. I think the longer term success wouldn't have come with the original 5 staying together. They needed their own spaces.
Alan L. That comment does an incredible disservice to every other musician that's been in Genesis. I'm no Phil hater and I enjoy 80s Genesis but "nobody would even know who Genesis is if Phil Collins hadn't joined"? what a silly and false comment.
@@amandabooth7399 How am I starting, just asking you on your thoughts of 80's Genesis? as you just said about 70's lineup is TIMELESS!!!! + I wasn't even asking you any way. 🙄
I wonder how many fans have some problems, why you always have to compare Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel? If Genesis with Phil Collins changed the name of group, you would argue here too. Every group is changing through the time and Phil did perfect work. Now when I listen to radio, I often hear Genesis with Phil Collins there and the songs are 30 years old!!
No, look, cmon guys, Phil Collins is one of the very few world class drummers out there. If you want to say he sold out, hey, we all gotta eat. He's still one of the drummers I would put in the same class as Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Moses, or Tony Williams. When I was a teenager George Benson totally sold out and I was all pissed off at him, then I read an interview where he said, I got sick of my kids running around without shoes. Do you blame him? I don't.
There's hardly been a decent comment on this video in 3 years, wow! Great video - Phil is a gent, and very talented. Tragic that's he's been ill of late.
Seriously, phil keep them in the game. Say what you will he help carry them on and still produced amazing songs. You either celebrate the entire collection or you dont, theres no middle ground.
1:24 Tony "I was used to looking up and see Pete." Phil said, You had to look down to see me!"😂 The Hawaiian shirt was 1980. Phil had that cool Yes type design vest in 1976.👍
you know what i find interesting, these guys picking the hell out of phil and judging him, yet he made that band what they are today, he was genesis!!, phil collins is awesome and they ought to realise that, there jealousy is obvious
TOTALLY AGREE! WHY THE POLARISATION? on the contrary, here is a bunch of people that have kicked ass with all types of style. Pop, Prog Rock, Fusion (Brand X etc). All worlds in one! Supermen. Why disect it and not celebrate the privilege of appreciating some of the best ever and most versatile real musos? It is simply a privilege! With every single one of them (and more... Bill Bruford, Alan White, extend the line to Vangelis, Jon Anderson, Trevor Horn). What a contribution!!!!!
Music is just an entertainment. You like it or you don´t . That´s all. If you don´t like Phil Collins don´t listen to him. If you like him - good. I like both - Gabriel and Collins. They are both good - just different. I also like Yes, ELP, or Rush. But I also like Michael Jackson, Madonna or Justin Timberlake and I have no problem with genres of music. If you have - bad for you. There´s a lot of great music in different genres. But ignore it if you want. Your choice.
It took me till Selling England ... to realise what a great drummer Phil was. But that weedy 'More Fool Me'? You wouldn't pick the man for a multi-million solo career ... wrong again! In The Air Tonight (which he never surpassed) was sublime. Yet also, his drumming with Brand X was astonishing, totally different style. A workaholic. He didn't have to carry on with Genesis, but he did, because he clearly loves the music and the guys. Genesis became a different band - but it was all of them, and the realities of the 80's, that headed them that way. Sure, I'm more into Gabriel era Genesis than later, but they did some corking stuff throughout. And I'm not too cool for his solo stuff either. To make such music in such a variety of styles, and have success as a drummer, singer and songwriter shows his depth of talent. And the others were by no means passengers.
Every musician which has played with Genesis, such Bill Brufford and Daryl Steurmer done a fantastic job, bujt the original formation shoud meet again to discuss about its reunion. If it occours, they also could do "The Lambie Lies Down On Broadway" again.
I think Tony and Mike must gather together again and record another album after the mixed reactions regarding Calling All Stations. If Phil or Peter are not interested, well their problem. Get Fish from Marillion as lead vocalist! That would definitely Rock!
Fish former singer from Marillion ( left in 1988 ! ) did not want to audition in 1996 ( Ray Wilson got the job ). He was not interested by the songs. Plus if you're listening to any of the Fish videos over the last years, you'll notice that he completely lost his voice.
They shoud do a Genesis reunion before on of them dies. Genesis is also fantastic and we should have something from band. Genesis, please, come back again
***** In the air tonight remains the best Genesis hit ever till this day. Written and composed with the best recognizable drum beat ever by......wait for it.....Phil Collins!!
+Jim Smith Sir, you have to remember that some people did not get to experience the original Genesis because of the radio. They never heard those songs you listed. Now, they might look them up. How do you think Phil is going to do since he announced his re entering music world? I love Gabriel too, but he also went kinda pop too.
Lol. Jesus calm down we can just talk this out. No need for name calling, man. People CAN like ANY and ALL the music they want. If you really want to call each thing their own band then I like Genesis with Peter Gabriel, Genesis with Phil Collins, Phil Collins, and as I previously stated Peter Gabriel's solo work is alright. Don't stress out about it man. No matter what you type here, you won't change anyone's mind on what to listen to. All I'd suggest is to listen to early Genesis to a new fan.
Phil Collins is to Genesis as Harrison Ford is to the Star Wars franchise. Genesis auditioned other singers and realized Phil was the best option. Other actors auditioned for Han Solo and they realized Ford the better choice. All Ford was doing was reading lines with the actors who were actually there for the auditions. Ford wasn't meant to audition, just a stand in.
Yeah that's my point. The music is timeless, but at some point they had to change otherwise they would never have made money. Prog isn't commercial garbage and they figured that out. Genesis need to realize this. THEY COULD NOT HAVE CONTINUED IN THEIR ORIGINAL PATH. PERIOD.
Yeah, well its not like Genesis would have continued without our favorite Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins, anyways. Trespass and Nursery Cryme the best to me. They were all incredibly gifted, but all things must pass. They don't do that stuff anymore so let your hatred be. Cream had 2 perfect albums, but they don't play like that anymore either. Things change, it sucks, but we deal with it. Bands end, but we still have their great music. That's all.
THEY FUCKED OVER THEIR OWN FANS AND WERE BOOED FOR IT!!! THEY STILL COULD HAVE STAYED A PROG BAND AND STILL STAYED AROUND!!!! NOBODY WERE SHOUTING ON THE STAGE WE WANT POP!!!!! WIND AND WUTHERING IS PLAYED EVERY DAY FACE REALITY!!!
I know man, its ridiculous. People want to argue and be right. By defending their great prog they think they are superior to others. That's simply not true. Listen at will, music is to be enjoyed, not endless debated online. I'm sick of stuff like this. You bring up several greats points as well.
i would of loved to been with a phil collins on his solo albums or tours. what would it of been like if phil didnt become the lead singer of genesis? they would of split up i think. If phil never joined genesis he would of been known as a session drummer then eventually would of gone to his solo work in 1980.
I couldn't see Genesis having space for another singer in 1975/6. It would have needed to be a session guy. Much better that Phil did it. He was in the family.
Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins both great singers, but wouldn't Simon Collins be a good replacement? Or maybe Nad Sylvan or possibly Jon Wilkinson from the genesis tribute band Mama. Just a thought folks.?
@claudenicolas I agree with you. I played the introduction of A Curious Feeling, "From the Undertow" and put the video on You Tube. Maybe you can see it and say what you think. I'd be happy
TURN OFF CAPS LOCK! If you liked their solo stuff why are you upset. Just because Genesis broke up? My god man, musically they changed people get bored doing the same stuff, as well as the money issue I addressed earlier. Peace.
3:15 why didn't Steve get the same benefit of the doubt? And if Steve was going to leave anyway why didn't Anthony Phillips return for recording and let Daryl replace him as a touring guitarist because you would have had him anyway?
but at least my guitar is tuned better than most by the way prog was to hard for me but i needed the money how could i turn down there offer to hire me
Who ever said they would mix? And what makes you think Genesis would ever be the same band without Gabriel? When's the last time you busted out Wind and Wuthering because you thought it was one of the greatest Genesis albums ever? Look, maybe you live on a planet where you never have to do what you have to do to survive, but there is a real world that I think from your post that you are only tangentially connected to. Grow up.
Then you're just saying you don't want people to listen to the later stuff who enjoy it. That's pretentious and unecessary. BTW I just got Trespass and Nursery Cryme on CD finally. Amazing stuff. Truly the embodiment of Prog Rock. Don't be angry about stuff it's not worth it. Lasty as usual turn off caps lock and have a nice day...crazy internet douche.
if Banks Collins Rutherford when were three, has changed the name of the band who can now remenber genesis????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! genesis is Banks Collins Rutherford.
And, by the way, Wind and Wuthering is far inferior to ANY Gabriel Genesis album, hands down. Do you want to compare it to Selling England or The lambs? Or Nursery Cryme? You better be able to play and compose to these levels before you have anything to say. And, off topic, there's this little button on your keyboard that says, caps lock.Try pressing that before you post again, you noob.
Dennis McCauley, who cares Collins had the better voice and that is why genesis skyrocketed to fame just face it already they were better with Collins sorry you can't face that....
Are you 15 years old? You can't be a prog band without someone with vision and creativity to guide the rest of the band into their own personal vision. Sorry, man, but Steve Hackett and Tony Banks were talented musicians in their own right, but just followers. Phil Collins, as well as being one of the greatest drummers ever, knew how to write a hit, which is a skill as well. You need to get off your high horse and face reality, and how many charting songs have you written lately?
You're just as bad as him, Dennis - just maybe not quite as annoying. "You better be able to play and compose to these levels before you have anything to say." Absolutely ridiculous way to back up an absolutely ridiculous statement.
Turn off caps lock, then we can talk. Jesus. I can't believe how childish you are being. Genesis would never have been able to continue as a prog band PERIOD. None of those bands made enough money to eat without as you say "selling out." People weren't buying.
Ocean sage, why can't we all see like you just explained it with so much sense but a lot of these people are stubborn goats and don't see it that way. What can you do...
***** Um no. Phil Collins fans are not morons. Some of them are actually quite intelligent. The REAL morons are the ppl who go around insulting other ppl who like someone that they don't. And btw, Phil was & always will be just as important to Genesis' legacy as Gabriel was.
