One of the most beautiful interpretations of Continuum I've heard. That cembalo's sounds is absolutely gorgeous

Happy to see my Iranian patriot Mahan naild it on the harpsichord. He’s a wonderful Bach interpreter and admirer.

I would be hard-pressed if asked to define "what is music"? But there is much here, presumably all by Ligeti, which approaches an antithesis of music and I'm bewildered at how many parts of this can be seen as possessing any qualities of "beauty". At the same time I'm fully aware that boundaries must not be placed on any directions that may be explored by any of the arts. Personally, I'm thankful that much of Ligeti's works (not all, by any means) failed to stimulate any significant new directions in music. However, no matter what my opinion of what is being performed, once again, this orchestra demonstrates it to be virtually without peer - anywhere! Both technically and interpretatively, the orchestra consistently shows itself to be among the best in the world, and I am so very thankful that it shares its performances on RU-vid. Further, I must mention Antinoglu, unknown to me before he became, presumably, Chief Conductor. May his performances here continue to appear, at least, until the day I am no more.

100 metronomes? I see only 15. Didn't know this had been transcribed for chamber ensemble! Did Ligeti himself make the transcription? All kidding aside, 100 metronomes make an extraordinary sound, and the piece can be quite startling and affecting. But more, this is an extraordinary concert of wonderfully inventive and emotionally powerful music with fantastic performances throughout from start to finish. And credit must be given to the spectacular video presentation, which so clearly captures the important moments in close up-- e.g., just check out the spot-on camera work during Aventures.

I was in the audience and the majority of the metronomes was placed between people, in the aisles and on the balconies. The recording does neither caputure the acoustic nor the visual experience of the concert.

Let's everyone who watches this boost this comment to the top, I'm sick of having to see the top comment be a hater. Like, imagine going to a concert and spending two hours having to look at a sign saying the music you're enjoying sucks - why is that acceptable just because it's the Internet? Anyway, fantastic concert! Interesting to hear what felt like somewhat fast tempi for a lot of the orchestral pieces, definitely a fresh take - I found it a compelling approach for the middle period masterpieces!

Love this large-scale programming in multiple « movements ». Maybe some explanations at the start of the concert would help the public understand the context of these works’ composition and the reason they were chosen, etc😊

well, to be fair, we get movie OST sounds from classical inspirations. Schoenberg is a very strong influence on movie soundtracks. That being said, performing it live is probably a waste.

As a live performance, I agree with you. There's not much point to listening to this live unless you have a really good imagination. That being said, this type of music is quite an amazing inspiration for movie soundtracks. Very few composers have managed to achieve this level of tension. It uses high-quality instruments together with intricately composed tension build ups. You'd be hard pressed to find any thriller or action movie without music that has been inspired by Ligeti or Schoenberg. See it more as experimentation than as standalone art. Perhaps the composers meant it as art, but I'd rather take it for musical potential. There are so many unique sounds generated in this that feel like they're just on the verge of beauty but never reach it. It's sad, but I'm hoping that future composers can turn this inspiration into something beautiful.

How is playing such beautiful music a waste ?
@thomaslaubli1886
@thomaslaubli1886 10 месяцев назад
I would rather say that playing the same Beethoven symphony or the same Vivaldi concerto a hundred times is a waste of the musicians' gifts. Here the skills of the musicians are better used.

Goodness me, what rubbish! Must be fun to be in the orchestra and think "to think they pay me to play this garbage, ha ha ha". What pain to be in the audiende and have to sit through this and pretend you like it so that others won't think you are uncultured.

these people payed for their seats. i doubt they’d pay for a concert dedicated to a specific composer if they had no idea anything about this genius of a composer. additionally, i encourage you to listen to the whole concert. notice the tonal moments within a lot of ligeti’s music. on top of this, the renaissance music sorikled throughout the program, music which ligeti took HEAVY inspiration from. music you might refer to as “not rubbish” (and correct you would be palestrina is incredible. point being, this music written by a muically passionate and reverent man, who writes with incredible respect for the traditions and styles of the past (“not rubbish”). it’s being played by musicians who are clearly quite passionate to participate in a concert honoring what would be this composer’s 100th birthday, to an audience who is eager to celebrate and honor such. in other words, listen closer, because i can’t find the rubbish.
