Lightyear is a 2022 American computer-animated science-fiction action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is a spin-off of the Toy Story film series. It centers on the character Buzz Lightyear, as well as the film presenting itself as part of a franchise within the Toy Story films in which Lightyear is a character. It was directed by Angus MacLane (in his feature directorial debut) and produced by Galyn Susman, from a screenplay and story written by MacLane and Jason Headley, both of whom co-wrote the latter with Matthew Aldrich. The film stars Chris Evans as the voice of the titular character, with Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, James Brolin, and Uzo Aduba in supporting roles.

It certainly made me compare this Buzz to the one from the first movie, and, good god they're not even CLOSE to being the same character. Buzz is meant to be brave, charming, resourceful, and an exceptional Space Ranger. He's the first one to rush to save someone. The cat and Buzz's backstory, albeit one that'd be the equivalent to a gritty reboot in Andy's world that he hates and his kids love, were the best parts of the film for me. I mean, how fucked up is it to be so stubborn and insistent to fix something that you completely miss out on your whole life and end up losing the people you care about in such a short amount of time? They said Sox was meant to catch him up to speed on how things have changed but, let's be real, he legit was an emotional support robot. I feel like this movie would have been a little bitter if they scrapped the other two side characters and just kept the granddaughter of the commander, giving her and Buzz a sort of familial bond since he was so close to the girl's grandmother, and if they didn't do THAT to Zurg.

I'd say the movie came first, and then they spun a cartoon off of it that ignored a lot of the basic plot and was mostly made to sell toys. As an example, after the second Rambo movie came out, they developed a kid's cartoon "based" on it that had a lot of extra characters and stuff, all for the sake of selling toys. They did something similar with Robocop, too.
@undertakernumberone1
@undertakernumberone1 Год назад
@@RabidMetroid No. Well... THAT is how they explained it after the fact, when the cartoon fans showed up and were not pleased with them apparently retconning the cartoon. And they then ALSO backpaddled further, going "THe Toy buzz is based on the CARTOON! But this movie totes is the origin of him!" So, they went: "THis is the movie that made Andy want a Buzz toy!" to "But hte toy was Buzz on the cartoon which has nothing to do with the movie but actually fits the whole Space Ranger and so on stuff! But he totally wanted it because of this movie" But here's the issue: The comparison with RObocop and co. fails because, unlike Robocop, this movie is meant to be a 95 (probably KIDS) movie. A 95 animation movie... which just doesn't is like a 95 animation kids movie... It's just not. And considering they had the cat robot, you'd assume that they'd put something as marketable as Sox into the cartoon. Like, if the movie was popular enough to spawn the cartoon, you'd assume that the kids who, apparently, stillw ere the main target, would have wanted the other characters to also show up. It's a poor excuse. The movie is basically the 2015 to 2022 "modern reimagining/reboot" of Buzz Lightyear, more so than "this is the movie that Andy saw in 95!"

Something that strikes me with Lightyear, aside from how there are certain aspects that would not have made sense to happen either in the 90s or that the toyetic era of that time would not have produced the clear supporting figures of a lot of characters, the film looks absolutely beautiful, and yet, it leaves so little an impression on me despite it. Honestly "The Bad Guys" was more striking by comparison. And the film not doing great is an understatement, it flat out bombed. But Disney is going to take no useful lessons from it or Strange World when Black Panther and Avatar are gonna be making profits that will more than make up for those losses. It'll likely leave them to undervalue the animation department more.

I was annoyed with the voice of Buzz war and I'm sure I'll be in a weird minority here: for a lot of the toys with voice recordings we had growing up, most the time their voices sounded generic or just a bit off from the original. That considered, I didn't see WHY it was so mandatory for him to be the same. I get having Tim Allen for nostalgia sake, but Toy Buzz was still his own "person" lol. Honestly when it came to the very FIRST PART of the story, that's the part that I liked the most; it had a creative idea, not for Buzz Lightyear- but in general, the concept of a society growing and adapting to their new predicament and making that their home while some one whom is, ESSETIALLY TIME TRAVELING to make it possible to return home, is fighting against it, unable to adapt, feeling forced to watch as their friends die one by one as they live out their lives on the planet. There is something THERE, something INCREDIBLY interesting and could've been dove into further; The other really good concept was Buzz's desire to 'be some one' and if he wasn't this one thing, he would lose all purpose; after all, all his friends are gone now. AMAZING CONCEPTS, terrible characters (except Socks) and use of the Buzz Lightyear brand. (though it's Toy Story still)

While I agree with everything on a storytelling perspective, I think the themes perfectly fit with Buzz's character arc in the main films. In those films, Buzz is at a constant battle with himself, who he is vs. who he wants to be as a Space Ranger. I think they reflected that very well here, despite butchering the execution in terms of the Buzz Lightyear brand. The film centers around Buzz's character growth as a whole and I think the correlation would have been a lot more clear had they cast Tim Allen as the Older Buzz because it would have better symbolized the man we know as Buzz Lightyear, and the fight he has with his identity.

And while the Zurg twist was done shitty, I think it's possible for him to become the evil Emperor we all know and love. Especially considering that post credit scene at the end. I actually didn’t mind the Zurg twist. On paper it sounds really cool. A alternate timeline Buzz so obsessed with completing the mission and righting his mistake, that he loses his humanity in the process. Where it really suffers is the execution. The movie isn’t long enough for them to adequately set the twist up, nor is current Buzz written in a way that could lead anyone to believe he’d end up like Future Buzz (Zurg).

I really don't see this as, "the movie Andy watched which made him love Buzz Lightyear." This feels more like, "The movie adult Andy in 2022 made as a tribute to a beloved childhood toy." Lightyear definitely is not the kind of kids movie that would have come out of the 90's. Not enough "rad" or "sick" scenes which showcase what a badass this Space Ranger is. Heroes with a critical emotional flaw which gets in their way is definitely a 2010's and 2020's style of hero. Having grown up with toy story, and Buzz Lightyear actually being my favorite toy growing up (so much so that I went as Buzz Lightyear for 3 Halloweens back to back as a kid), I believe my younger self would not have liked this version of Buzz. He just doesn't have that same level of hype as the original did.

Idea for a diffrent lightyear movie Andy is a 20 year old collage kid who finds out a modern remake of buzz lightyear is being filmed nearby and the actor playing this new buzz is Chris Allen (yes after both buzz actors) who played a lot of andys heros, when andy goes to see the filming he sees that Chris Allen is not this brave kind hero but insted a loud whinney jerk (classic mean actor nice actor) Andy gets mad seeing his hero like this yelling that 'chris inst worthy to be a real hero because being a hero is supposed to mean something and-' before he can say any more hes dragged out by security

I knew this movie would be in for a bad time, with me at least, when it finished and Sox was the most memorable part.

If Andy saw this movie he would have wanted a Sox toy.

I think the core reason that people were upset is that they just shoved Buzz Lightyear into a generic sci-fi movie (which maybe could have worked on its own) because Disney needed some easy marketing. Rather than draw audiences in, it pissed everyone off because we’ve had Buzz in Toy Story and in the Star Command TV show. And those versions are actually FUN and colorful and exciting. Pixar/Disney can try to shove BLofSC under the rug all they like - the fact remains that it was an enjoyable part of people’s childhoods and they will absolutely compare this new thing to what came before. Disney is too reliant on IP being the draw and not enough on good storytelling. Just because you slap a certain logo or character on something does not mean it’s an easy success. If anything, your laziness means that it’s going to piss people off when they realize what you’ve done to a beloved character.

Wasn’t really sure how to feel going into the film and loved idea that as buzz went foward everyones option changed except for him but the twist made me go wtf. I was at least hoping at the end we would see Andy and his mom in the movie theater going back to toy story at least.

It's probably better we didn't see that. I'm sure Andy had a hissy fit afterwards. This would have been the movie to "ruin" Andy's childhood.

So many problems could have been solved by them having jetpacks. The entire time watching it, it was all me and my brother could think about, "where are the jetpacks?!"

Yeah, I 100% agree. The best part about this movie is Sox. And Chris Evans isn't a bad casting choice, he did his best version of Tim Allen that he could. They just didn't give a good plot for him to act in...

I had two maybe three issues with Zurg he should've actually been Buzz's father or he should've been voiced by Tim Allen

I remember thinking it looked terrible so I didn’t watch it. My aunt and uncle went to see it with the grandkids and they said it sucked. When my aunt and uncle, two people who will pretty much like any Disney animated film, says it sucks. Then it REALLY must suck
