Its pure perfection and beyond .... 2 male vocals (lead and backing) done to surreal perferction, totally out there background music production and reverb ..... its hard to say which is better, this one or Africa, this group has two of the greatest songs I've ever heard ..... Michael McDonald sang probably the greatest most beautiful male backing vocal I've ever heard ... his surreal backing together with the lead vocal makes the chorus gives me absolute goosebumps ....

@Jessica_Roth
@Jessica_Roth 2 года назад
Yes, you've now heard four Toto songs…and four different lead vocalists. "Hold the Line" was lead singer Bobby Kimball. "Rosanna" is guitarist Steve Lukather, with Kimball coming in later in the song. "Africa" is keyboardist David Paitch (the band's chief songwriter) alternating verses with Kimball. And by 1986 and this song, Kimball had been busted on drug charges (he beat the rap) and fired for missing rehearsals. The new singer is Joseph Williams, son of the famous composer. (His dad's the guy who did the "Star Wars" theme.) Eventually, in 1998, Kimball returns, but that's a different band by then.

The lead singer of this song, Steve Lukather, is actually more famous for being an amazing studio guitarist. From Michael Jackson's "Beat It" to Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" to Lionel Richie's "Running With The Night", he is "the man" if you want some serious guitar action. Steve's is also a Grammy-winning songwriter....he won a Grammy for co-writing "Give Me The Night", a huge hit for George Benson.

This song is from "Fahrenheit" which actually introduced us to Joseph Williams son of famous composer John Williams. Joseph would do this and "The Seventh One" album with Toto. He was replaced but later returned to the band in 2006. Joseph does all the lead vocals on "Fahrenheit" except for two songs this song and "Without Your Love" where lead duties were performed by guitarist Steve Lukather. Toto had several lead singers over their career span but my favorite vocalist is Steve.

"I'll Be Over You" peaked @ #11 in 1986. It was Toto's 12th single (of 14 total) to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Toto hit the Top 10 4 times including one #1 single ("Africa" / 1982). Recommendation: "Georgy Porgy" (featuring Cheryl Lynn on the chorus) from 1979. Sexy, slow groove beat for those "sleaze" (in SF we called it "morning music" /NYC called it "sleaze") dance floor sessions when outside the sun was rising in the early morning but the dancers still wanted to move-- albeit slowly. There is an extended 12-inch single very worth listening to.

He sang lead in many of their ballads (99, I Won't Hold You Back) while inserting some tremendously tasteful solos even in those ballads. The solo in I Won't Hold You Back is awesome. Toto always had multiple lead singers, including 3 on their first album alone, and their biggest hits all have different lead singers.

I haven't heard this song in such a long time, and it brought back a time in my life that was so good but then it didn't work out like we hoped it would. But this song mad me cry because of the lost memories.

PrababLy the best musicians of the 80s...they wrote for Michael jackson and did a lot behind the scenes. They glide when they plat. Very very ahead of times

Two underrated Toto songs "99" and "Georgy Porgy" the two of you should get around to those. P.S. That's Michael McDonald on background vocals and you get a few glimps of him in the video.

I can't hear 99 without thinking of Barbara Feldon who played Agent 99 from the hit TV show Get Smart. She was gorgeous and now she is about 99 almost. And probably still beautiful ❤️ Check out Get Smart on RU-vid.

This was guitarist Steve Lukather on vocals. He sang the softer verses in Rosanna. He also sings on other Toto hits. The lead vocalist with the power voice who sang the hooks on Rosanna and Africa and the lead on Hold the Line was Bobby Kimball. Kimball had left the group a little before this 80's ballad and the man playing tambourine and signing backup on this one was his replacement. Finally, the bearded gentleman singing backup was the legend Michael McDonald. You did several of his band the Doobie Brothers and one of his solo hits; On My Own, the duet with Patti Labelle. Check one of his other solo hits like I Keep Forgettin' (Jay will really appreciate this one) or Sweet Freedom. Both showcase his silky voice nicely.

This song sounds different because it was written by Steve Lukather (lead on this song) and Randy Goodrum. The other songs you listened to were written by David Paich. When this song was recorded they did not have a "lead" singer, since Joseph Williams (red head in video) had not officially joined the band. Michael McDonald was recruited to do the back up on this song and both he and Joseph are in the video. Steve wrote their two biggest ballads-this one and I Won't Hold You Back. Beginning with this song he began to do more leads and over the years the majority of their ballads were sung by Steve.

Do next these from them : "Angel don't cry" , "'I'LL supply the love", "Endless", "Holyanna", "Hydra", "All us boys" , "99" & "Stranger in town"

Love how Michael Mcdonald is just hanging out, adding in a little back-up help here and there. Toto trades off lead vocals between three guys. The talent runneth over.

I completely agree with others that you should check out "I won't hold you back". Another great Toto ballad is the bluesy "Out of love". Yet another lead singer on this one.

Thanks for reacting to my request! 😃 Guest singer: Michael McDonald. Steve Lukather and late Jeff Porcaro played in I Keep Forgettin' 40 years ago 🎂 Written by Randy Goodrum and Steve Lukather. They were next door neighbors in Metro Los Angeles. Goodrum moved to Nashville. Steve Lukather is the lead singer here. He sang the chorus in Rosanna. He is the lead guitarist in all Toto songs. Previous hit songs written or co-written by Randy Goodrum. You Needed Me (Anne Murray), A Lesson in Leaving (late Dottie West), Who's Holding Donna Now? (DeBarge), Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart (co-written by Steve Perry). Suggested songs: 1 Toto performs I Won't Hold You Back. 2 Debarge performs Who's Holding Donna Now?

Toto was one of the most talented groups in music because it was composed of studio musicians. These people play the music on a lot of other artist's recordings, so they have to be really good to play the songs without weeks of practicing. I'm sure you've heard Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. The reason it was so good was the music behind Jackson and that was basically Toto.

Toto's songs, "Gift of Faith" and "Bottom of Your Soul" ... You got to listen to those two. You know this group first formed in 1977 and is still preforming. Saw them in concert just prior to the lock down.
