www.dolphinstreet.com The Line 6 M9 stompbox modeler is a fantastic unit with over 100 high quality effects. Highly recommended. Guitar used: Michael Kelly Patriot Shadow. Amp used: Mack GEM from www.mackamps.com
Yes and yes, you can have 3 distortions in a row if you like, then just turn any of them on/off. There are lots of good compressors in it, which works great for a clean boost effect. Thanks!
You get so much more with this unit. You won't start thinking "hmm, I need a delay pedal now, or a chorus, or a compressor... " etc - it's all in here. Plus it's compact!
It’s a great pedal. It replaced an Arion SCH-1, and El Capistan on my board. Not because it sounds “better.” But because it sounds nearly as good, and opens up so many more options. I literally have to retrain myself with thinking about my board. I still have a Flint for basic verb duties, with the M9 in true bypass mode, but I can easily assign the verb back on the M9, drop an Iridium in the Flints place, and boom, a *very *capable direct rig. That flexibility is priceless.
Yes, I am pulling off on the G string, and playing notes on the A string from the A Mixolydian mode. Alternating back and forth, while I'm "traveling" up the neck. I don't play the open A string by itself. Hope that helps. Lesson some time later perhaps!
I just bought this thanks to your review. It was originally going the Boss or TC! But the distortion punch through at about .51, was the selling point. Thanks
@greenstJimmy No they are independent. Like the pedals hooked up together. However, it also has scenes, and each scene can have whatever combination of stompbox models you want.
Thanks rotren~ I always enjoy your demo vids and your playing is awesome. How's the quality of the Drives including ods and distortions? Do you still feel digital?
Amazing review, very complete, nice audio and great guitar playing also. Thanks man! (If you got the time show us the M9 loop on your style, i could bet you´d do great!)
Hey guys! Would you like me to do another demo like this, but with no string sounds coming through? Such a video tends to be long though, since there are SO MANY sounds in this baby! Let me know, okay?
wow I have one of these and never knew it did so much. thanks so much for the very nice exhaustive review! musicians like me adore people like you on youtube.
I'm also surprised how nicely this thing does clean-ish sounds. Mess around with some low gain settings on the the tube drive, and some of the filters, you can store various versions clean settings. One of most immediately addicting pieces of gear I've ever owned. I want to say though, I will be using it as much for recording as I will for gigging, but based on what I am hearing now, I would use it just as a gigging board as well.
@TheSoundNoOneNoticed Perfect sense, thanks very much! Hopefully picking one up next week, I was a bit sceptical about using modelled effects, but tried one and they sound great! Looking forward to leaving the huge pedalboard at home :)
@fenderilize Most Od's and Distortions sound very organic to me. Some are more exciting than others, but definitely worth trying. I have no problem gigging with only the M9 on my pedal board.
Thanks for posting this demo. I was contemplating buying this or another multi fx pedal. Has lots of cool and fun sounds... That I will never use. This confirms that I will stick with my individual analogue pedals and get that one sound that I really want. However, I definitely see the use of this for live players with a diverse setlist or anyone who is not super anal about their sound. and does not want to spend too much. I don't dare add up how much my pedals have cost me lol... This is a real bang for your buck system.
Very nice demo, Robert. The Verb stuff alone is worth the price of the whole M9. Add an expression pedal (think dive bombs, pitch glide, wah, and volume swells), and you can rule the world!
Yes, if you use it in an effect loop. I use it like this myself. It's a great box. Maybe you would be able to find better single effects, but if you hear what you have, you won't need them.
The delay can oscillate on it's own or you can run the output to the second input and turn the output on with an A/B box to make it so it feeds back into itself.
Wow you master a lot of styles and that's what makes a good guitarplayer in my opinion. How did you learn to play so lightning fast? do you have some tips or techniques for me? Because I'd really like to play that good someday.
@rotren Im undecided in want I want to buy. I have my mind in the nova system and the Line 6 M9. Can you help me on my decision. Which one do you think is better for playing in a band. I want warm sounds! Great Video! Keep rocking!
Thanks for the review. I bought the M9 and I use it with my Stratocaster. With my stereo headphones (using a Y adapter plugged in L and R) I can only hear the sound it in my left ear, even when I use effects that are supposed to be stereo. Does that mean that when the input is mono the output is always mono?
Hmm, by practicing a lot. I spent time playing slowly to a drum machine, in order to develop some kind of accuracy. Then you work up the speed, slowly. Over time, you'll be able to play faster. But please, don't think that playing fast is "better" in any way. It can sound cool at times, but it's really not that important. Playing good lines and ideas, whether slower or fast, is what you should focus on.
Hello..! nice review there well done. Can you store 3 different modulation effects, let's say chorus phaser and flanger, and use them all three at the same time? Thank you for your time.
Dolphinstreet would you consider using the M9 as a noise gate as well?. I use several pedals, mostly OD and distortions, but I don't have a noise gate and always get a lot of noise. I own a Line6 M9, but I never use it, if it works I will definitely put it on my board. Where should I put it if I don't want to take out any pedals (no fx loop)? My current pedalboard: polytune/ts808/ts9/OCD/DS-1/vicking distortion/boss PS-6/memory man/ dd3/ flashback X4/ Tc HOF /TR-2/ Crate SS Amp. Thanks.
nice demo :) I own a m 13 and just love it. it´s getting even better after the update. did you know that you can use every scene with a midi-preset and switch your amp-channel just by choosing a scene? ok, it doesn´t capture the sound of some stomp boxes like lovepedal, fulltone or z.vex but that doesn´t matter if you need a perfect setup for gigs.90% works fine with me^^ after all.. your fingers had to create most of your sound.
I am trying to decide weather to get this one or the m13, i think the m13 may be a little overkill though, due to the fact i like my dry distortion that my orange rocker 30 produces.
Hi rotren how does this compare to the Boss Gt-10 effects unit. Which one gets your vote. Also just grabbed another Suhr T so will put photo's on your site later.
I had 14 individual stomp boxes mostly BBE and i sold them all except my Wah, whammy and tuner and got the M13 it is a killer unit once you make you scenes it is a great live unit.. Ditch your stomp boxes and get one of these ....
@rotren My bad, i didn't realise the video was a view of the pedal, i doubt there are many more sounds for you to cover but perhaps another video with some expression pedal stuff?
@ Dolphinstreet - if you are still using this board could you do another updated overview and provide your thoughts after you've been using it for a while now.
I use the M9 all the time live. I still love it - it has so many great sounds and it does not mess up me regular tone either. The only drawback is you can only have 3 stompbox models in a row (4 with the M13) but I combine it with my analog pedals and it works well. This is probably the best deal or purchase for someone who is looking into getting some useful pedals. This unit gives you A LOT for the money.
Can this stack different delays? I started playing ambient, and for my swells i need to stack different delays, can i save diferent delays on each button? And use them as pedals?
I am planing to buy the m9 but before I do, I need to know if I can save a certain sound on each switch? Example: delay+reverb+distortion - switch 1 / chorus + reverb - switch 2 / chorus + reverb -switch 3 etc. I am planning to use it live & really need quick switching between presets. Thanks
+Saša Pavšić Each switch has only one sound. You can have 3 effects on at the same time. These are saved as SCENES. So for example, you can have: distortion+delay+reverb, or compressor+chorus+delay and so on, and each can be saved. You can not have more than 3 on at the same time. There are 3 columns with 6 switches. I could have for example, distortion or overdrive for the first column, chorus or phaser for the second column, and maybe reverb or delay for the last column. I can then switch between the two for each column at any time.
Thank you very much for an answer. So if I need some very long reverb+delay for somekind of intro, and then I have to switch to let say overdrive+other reverb; I have to tap 1x reverb + 1x delay ON; then the same thing to turn them OFF and then 1x overdrive +1 x reverb ON?
+Saša Pavšić I don't get your question. This is how it works - each button has ONE effect. You can have THREE effects on at the same time, maximum. If you have overdrive on top left button (1st column) and you want change to compressor instead of overdrive, you press the bottom left button (1st column). That will change from overdrive to compressor. Note that you don't turn anything on/off - you simply switch between the two. You can do the same for the remaining 2 columns.
+Robert Renman my question would be, if I save 3 different effects as scene 1, and other 3 effects as scene 2, can I switch between 2 scenes with just one tap?
you can assign a different effect type to each button right?...say i wanted a delay on B1/B2/A3, a reverb on B3, distortion on A1, and a mod on A2...i could do that right?
I just ran through this thing the Phaser Flanger, Reverb, Univibe are awsome I'm not sold on the fuzz, but this thing is worth its weight. My fulltone Deja Vibe almost cost the same amount and its slightly better.
@rotren Thank you! I use an Engl Blackmore, and it doesn't have a switch for line/instrument level. I haven't really looked into that stuff either, so I'm not competent to really respond to that =P
