This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 3-day backpacking adventure that I took to the Linville Gorge Wilderness in May 2020. I covered the Pinch-In - Linville Gorge - Conley Cove - Rock Jock Loop in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest.
I had planned on doing some fishing on this trip but recent heavy rains had swollen the Linville River to foil those plans. I still had a great time exploring the Gorge while trying (and failing) to stay dry. Even with the relatively low mileage covered on this trip I got to see a ton of beautiful sights!

This was my wettest trip of the year so far! Hopefully it retains this throne for the remainder of 2020

You might have walked up to the road when you came out Conley Cove and left those fishing poles hidden in the woods by the road side so you wouldnt have your hands full when you hiked Rockjock. Could have driven back to Conley Cove to pick them up. ( if the road was in good condition.)

Maybe next time! There were a couple scrambly portions on Rock Jock but it wasn’t too bad

Another great one, thanks sir. In ‘93 I had one hell of weekend at the gorge. Use to live in Boone back then. Always felt lucky to have made it out. It’s a beast.

Really great little trip write-up. You did great considering the weather. Rockjock has several side trails that run out to viewpoints and these are spectacular..but the rain and fog gave you no view. If you do it again in better weather, you'll enjoy some of these little side-trails. I am disappointed that more hikers dont re establish the connection that once existed between Pinchin and the south terminus of Rockjock. That steep exit trail you used is labeled Rockjock on the USFS map but it is a much older trail called Mossy Canyon Ridge Trail (MCRT). Rockjock once extended south to Pinchin and beyond along the west rim of the Gorge and the scenery was great. Someday I hope that connection will be reopened.

Thanks Robert! I was aware of the side trails on Rock Jock thanks to LGMaps & the Avenza App but like you said, no view due to the weather so I didn’t check them out. Something to look forward to for next visit! How long ago was it that the connection existed? I don’t remember seeing even a faint breakaway off Rock Jock towards Pinch-in, could have easily missed it in the weather. I’m guessing maybe it followed along the water sources that show up on the map in between Rock Jock & Pinch-in on the south side of Mossy Canyon?

@@LayneComfort It runs along the edge of the cliffs. The entrance is overgrown by now but was maybe 300 ft west of the Rockjock turn north. Old maps may show the MCRT as a trail. The upper part of it is now considered the south end of Rockjock.
