In today’s video I complete a concentrate diesel purge on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Sahara, 4.5L twin turbo diesel.
We talk about why we would consider a diesel purge or other additives to the vehicles fuel system and attempt to test the effects before and after, both hot and cold engines using the ECU’s engine management system.
In particular today, we compare the injector feedback values of each individual injector and what they mean. We talk about the importance of monitoring these values and why it’s important to look after you vehicles fuel injection system.
Do these products actually work and would I clean the system again or continue using additives in my fuel system? Watch the video to find out more.

I can confirm that liqui moli diesel purge DOES work!! Here in south africa our diesel has a high sulphur content so our diesel vehicles suffer quiet a bit however a diesel purge makes them run like new again. I have had a case where a BMW 2.0d sdrive would basically run on 3 cylinders on cold startup with a decent amount of smoke coming out, rough idling and loud injector clutter when driving. Replaced fuel filter and purged 2 cans through it and still to this day car starts without issue on cold and drives pretty much like new. I have even noticed on vehicles with DPF after purge the DPF pressure drops completely to almost brand new. Only had 1 situation on a Audi 1.6TDI where the purge didnt help but i suspect corrosion from moisture in the injectors where purging doesnt really help

Hi Nathan .Great video and explanation. I noticed some comment on foreign bodies and algae in the fuel. I have learned over time that diesel can develop an algae contaminant if you get a load of old fuel from a servo with low diesel turnover, or may at some time have had water in their storage tanks. This is the other reason I use a diesel conditioner. Most fuel additives should not only help the injectors, but neutralise "diesel snot" . Hope this helps and thanks for the video. PS I also put it in my Diesel heater tank.

Thanks Harry, appreciate the feedback on the video. I have continued to use the fuel conditioner in the vehicle, for that exact reason. @BruceWayne-sz3thWithout even seeing your engine I would make an educated guess and say the oil likely wasn't changed according to manufacturer's specifications and it has suffered as a result. To sum it up I would bet on it being faulty rings or a damaged cylinder wall surface or both, it honestly sounds like blow-by, resulting in unburned fuel entering the oil and diluting the contents of the crankcase resulting in further damage to the cylinder wall and rings and before too long the bearings as well. If that is in fact your situation I wouldn't want your car even if I was offered it for free. Get someone qualified to perform a compression test and a leak-down test and if your compression is poor and especially if it's not your valves I would be concerned about the condition of your cylinder walls and rings...

Hi Nath, another very useful and enjoyable video, well done mate. It would be interesting to able to compare the data with a brand new vehicle as well. Question: any reason why not to use a Toyota product? Thanks
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 года назад
Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback once again. It sure would be interesting to compare with a near new engine. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a near new 200 series, otherwise it would have been a great comparison. Answer to your question, no particular reason. TO be honest, a few internet reviews provided some positive feedback for the Liqui-moly product's and along with their reliable reputation, I was happy with this choice. I guess the Liqui-moly products are probably a little more readily available to most people, being stocked in most popular Aus vehicle accessory stores. Although I'm sure Toyota dealers would stock their cleaner (and online options), I'm assuming most people would generally attend and check mainstream franchise stores first. Further, I may try this product down the track just to see whether any further benefit can be gained. Cheers, Nathan.

I bypassed my Fuel system on my Ford Ranger - put the Luquid Mobi straight to the rail using an 6mm and 8mm fuel lines and a clean empty 2 litre pre-wash bottle as the fuel resevoir / return from rail. (pulling all the fuzes on the pump and vapourises). I ran two two full cans neat - with the return to the fuel resevoir having an inline fuel filter... Try that... It works almost neat mixing with the diesel in the rail.

That's a very good comparison and you have presented it very well! Personally, I use Morey's Stop Smoke & Fuel Conditioner in my old 2h. After about 4-5 fuel tanks, I noticed smoother running in higher rpms, significantly less smoke when under load, and a slight increase in power however no change in fuel economy (gets between 12-13 L/100 before and after fuel treatment). Initially, I was using Fuel Doctor but I didn't notice any real difference. I find the Morey's stuff is more effective. It's pretty cool how you can collate that data and make direct comparisons with modern technologies.

LIQU Mobi and LUCAS are good in my opinion, Sea foam is hit and miss - the rest is snake oil. Edit - I got a tip for oil changes - That does work - pour an Ouance / Oz of Sea Foam into your engine oil 200km before an Oil Change... let it run. Then do the oil change - it is like a pure solvent that helps remove gummy deposits - it does work for that, you'll get lots of tarry crap out of your oil drain.

Hi mate, seen you have a post fuel filter on there, what micron did you go with and why did you choose to go post over a pre filter. Just curious to your thoughts. Cheers mate
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 года назад
Hi Mark, yes that's correct I'm running a post filter and this is a 5 micron filter. So the reason I ran a post filter, rather than a pre filter is to allow the factory sensor in the primary filter to activate if for whatever reason water gets into the system or the filter becomes blocked. The post filter allows any dirt that may have passed the primary filter to be captured at this point prior to entry. Now I know this may not always make sense, however there are pro/cons for both pre and post filters. Fitting a pre-filter could potentially block up with dirty fuel and won't provide the driver with any information until the SCV (suction control value) is placed under large stress, potentially causing a failure. The primary factory filter is still a very cost effective maintenance item and is very easy to change roadside if required. I hope this helps somewhat. Cheers, Nathan.

Great Video Nathan. The results seem too close to really get the feeling that anything has really changed. The graphs can sometimes exaggerate the real data. Some of this variation demonstrated could be in the errors associated with the actual measurement, as it is probably a voltage measurement and they can fluctuate a fair bit due to interference etc etc. Your car is too well maintained, get a mates shitbox that has been abused and showing some clear signs of neglect (lol). About the injectors values, the sum of all of them is 0. And if you have 1 injector with problems, the rest will compensate for it. As we can see 1 injector has -1.7 value. With your LC v8 making 175kw peak, 30% load at cold start idle would be 52 kw just sitting there. With many petrol turbos thats what contols boost pressure, you target more load in the ecu map. Also there's load commanded and load actual so if u go to overtake, the load commanded goes up, load actual is lagging, the wastegates shut, it spools and boosts until load actual catches load commanded. So much stuff going on, thats like 2% what a modern ecu is doing 👍

For sure, regular doses of these cleaners will help long term. I was cleaning out my Landcruiser VDJ79R fuel filter case the other day with compressed air and blew a little bit of black algae & crap out from under the plastic float housing in the bottom of the filter case. @dopiaza2006 3 года назад
I'm not sure you're reading the values correctly. As I understand it, the ECU reads the flywheel speed thus seeing which cylinders are generating less power at idle. On the 'slower' cylinders, the ECU increases the fuel amount (positive values), but it also decreases the fuelling of other cylinders to balance it out. So really you only need to be looking at the positive numbers. It's a shame we don't know whether the injector cleaner or tank additive is the thing that made the difference.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 года назад
I understand your logic here and would concede that this could be the case. @teomannaskali
@teomannaskali 3 года назад
Hi, Those values are a good indication of injector health. However there are also other factors involved. If your cam shafts or associated valve mechanisms are worn irregularly then the air entering the cylinder will also be irregular. Therefore the engine management system will change the fuel input depending on the air (O2 sensor) or the actual acceleration of the engine (from the crank shaft sensor). So FYI you are not analysing purely the injectors. If i recall correctly the HD-1FTE engine (injector pump) in the 4.2 land cruiser diesel used crank shaft acceleration to adjust injection quantities to smooth the idle and probably during the operation of the engine. Thank you for the video. Very informative and professionally done. Your work is very appreciated.

The return line goes directly from the high pressure pump all the way back to the tank tank. So for the concentrated purge activity, only one hose needs to go into your plastic container, to draw the liqui moly product in. There is no need to disconnect two hoses because there is no fuel coming in from the tanks, as there is no lift pump that feeds fuel from the tank to the engine. Only the supply hose going into the factory sedimenter needs to be submerged into the container. I would simply open the fuel tank cap to release any air pressure in the tank, so that when the return fuel goes back to the tank, it doesn't push fuel into the supply hose. N.B. This advice that I am giving is only specific for the VDJ200 - other makes, e.g. Ford Territory actually have a fuel lift pump in the tank, so two hoses do need to be disconnected.

There are definitely advantages to both running pre and post filters and it will depend on how you want to set up your particular vehicle. The reason I chose this method is that it allows the pre-filter to essentially run as standard, meaning that if I pick up dirty fuel, my dash and factory sensors will let me know. I always carry an extra fuel filter and am able to clear the fault light with the Ultraguage. Running a pre-filter can protect your factory filter, however you won't know whether it has picked up dirt and debris until there is a slow down of fuel passing through the filter.
