Fred Ziffel uses them to re-shingle his roof. "I can't cook," Lisa confesses. "All I can do is talk Hungarian and do imitations of Zsa Zsa Gabor." All rights to clips owned by MGM.
And the really great part was that although she was reluctant to move to the country, she was the one who fit in with the crazy locals whilst Oliver was always the fish out of water. The Hootervillians accepted Lisa as one of their own.
I wonder how many rural Americans identify with this show, now? And shows like Petticoat Junction and Beverly Hillbillies. Do they get a laugh, or do they think it might be making fun of them? I actually see more of the Establishment-types getting razzed in these shows.
Eva was indeed delightful, but then so were so many characters! I loved Mr. Ziffel and his 'son' Arnold the pig, Mr. Haney with his delightfully irritating twang, Eb Dawson with his clueless enthusiasm, Sam Drucker, the philosopher-storekeeper, and Hank Kimball, who could never get things right!
Looking back on these clips many years later, it's clear that Eva had the talent in the family---she deftly handles the dialogue and keeps the light mood of the show, beautifully. She should be remembered for that than just for being a 'Gabor'--
Thanks for these GREAT MEMORIES, still as Hysterical as when they were just broadcast then. Never knew what to expect next, AND learned all the different uses for her Hot Cakes . . . Just like Ellie May Clampet on the Beverly Hillbillies. My stomach is going to start hurting, like back then. To Quote Master Bob Hope "Thanks for the Memories" . . .
Funny as the farmers were all complaining about him wearing a different suit when he farms...and wanted him to where overalls. And FINALLY at the end of the episode he does (Not Lisa's expensive diamond ones) they were all wearing their suits. LOL.
Their chemistry was incredible, and their romantic scenes were pretty hot, too, especially for that era. Eddie and Eva were actually best friends in real life, which certainly helped onscreen.
+DaveConleyPortfolio That was my best memory of the whole series too,as I had a friend whose father was a mechanic, and I used to hang around his garage ;and on occasion saw him install new gasket on vehicles. And when I saw that episode ...I laughed to tears for minutes on end.
It's like when she FINALLY made spaghetti correctly...but pours orange juice all over it as she was serving it for breakfast. And Oliver said he wanted 'orange juice' and being she takes everything literally...LOL
How could the actors keep from cracking up during filming? Kimball and Ziffel were the funniest, but they all had a different, whacky style that fit together. And Haney- oh man.
I want to be Lisa Douglas when I grow up ! I've already got the terrible cook part mastered...need to work work on that sweetness thing. I want pink appliances, too !
Because she was Zas Zas Gabor. Eva wasn’t the star of this show. I remember! I only knew her from this show! Her name was big on the intro! I watched the re runs on Nick at Nite and I fell in love with the show.. now to see Eva’s name just don’t make sense at all!
Are you saying Zsa Zsa rest in peace because you think SHE was on Green Acres, Diarmuid? If so, I'm afraid you're wrong. It was her sister, Eva, who was on Green Acres.
"You knew when you married me that I couldn't cook, I couldn't sew and couldn't keep house. All I could do is talk Hungarian and do imitations of Zsa Zsa Gabor." That is the best line in these clips. I wonder what her sister Zsa Zsa thought about that.
I know it had to be funny, but I never understood why Lisa could only cook pankcakes, and how she even got them that way. She can't even make coffee. I could have brewed coffee when I was a child in the 1960s.
The 'hotcakes' are a central long running series gag in that the 'urbane' and refined Mrs. douglas knows nothing about cooking, her 'hotcakes' amount to rocks..LOL!!
Are you saying Zsa Zsa rest in peace because you think SHE was on Green Acres, LeVin? If so, I'm afraid you're wrong. It was her sister, Eva, who was on Green Acres.
As Nick at Nite put it, 'Eva will NOT harm you!' However, she had her fun with Chuck Norris when he demonstrated karate while she sub hosted for the 'Merv Griffin Show'!
Hotscakes was a running gag. Green Acres was so stupid, it was funny. Too bad the country type comedy shows were phased out. The networks wanted to attract the youth of that time being the hippi types.
That seems a contradiction since many hippies wanted to go back to nature or live off the land in communes. Problem was they didn't like the hard work.
I hated this show until I discovered, years later, that it was farce. As surrealism it is waaaay ahead of it's time featuring war hero, the GREAT Eddie Albert.
It's a year later, and I'm getting accustomed to a booming economy, lots of job openings, lots of illegal aliens fleeing for their lives, and America being made great again.
