Doc, most of us are chronically low in potassium. Potassium used to be prescribed to lower BP. 3,600 mg rda iirc? Guess who gets that much? Almost NO ONE.
My doctor put me on Lisinipril a few years ago, 20mgs. She doubled it a year ago to 40mgs because she wanted my blood pressure even lower. I developed the horrible cough and also heart arrythmias. Heart doctors did all kinds of tests, even a catherization and implanted a heart monitor. Couldn't find anything wrong with my heart. I kept saying I thought I was being over medicated but they wouldn't hear of it. I cut my Lisinipril dose back to 20 mgs, on my own, and the cough went away. I recently decided to stop it altogether, and guess what! My heart went back to normal rythmns! Docs still won't admit it was caused by the medication. Didn't like it that I was self-treating myself! I'm 80 years old and in good health. My blood pressure and pulse are too low because they have me on too much medication. They won't admit it. I wonder if they get a bonus for every prescription they sell. Not all doctors, of course, but my primary care is always quick to prescribe medication for whatever ails me, and once on it your on it for ever!
Many docs have selective hearing issues. I was fine on 10 & 20 mgs but after that it produced myoclonic spasms over whole body and lupus-like labs. They said "that's not a listed side effect" repeatedly. Was worked up for MS! Changed BP meds and SHAZAAAM, it all cleared up.
Too much potassium (pills) can cause a heart attack. I know it happened to me. I developed swelling in my foot and ankle, went through a couple of months of physical therapy…no change. My cardiologist took a look and said it was the lisinopril. Reminds me of a story my mother told me as a child. An individual goes to the dr and the dr prescribed a pill for the ailment. It fixed the problem, but another problem showed up. Dr. Again prescribed a pill to take care of it. Yes this continued until the person was loaded down with pills. She told me this because I asked for an aspirin for a headache. Didn’t help my headache, but the story stayed with me to this day.
Once they get you on it , you can't get off. I've been on lisinopril , lovastatin ,and warfarin for 20 years from a stroke, I have lost weight but not enough to stop medications.
A relative of mine had this multiple meds problem. She developed a twitching/shaking of her head (like Katherine Hepburn). She got fed up, took herself off her meds, got a new MD and surprise, her shaking stopped completely!
I was first put on Metoprolol for moderately elevated BP. At rest my BP dropped to normal but my heart rate dropped to 32. Started having postural hypotension, unable to exercise or even walking up a flight of stairs would have me gasping for air. Switched to Lisinopril - low dose 10mg. After 4-6 weeks, I developed the typical dry cough, continued for 3 weeks and then stopped. BP stabilized, cough went away. Three months later I noticed my BP going back up again with increase in headaches and stress. I put myself back on lisinopril 10mg. BP back to normal and the dry cough did not return. This has been about 7 years now. This may not work for everyone but don't give up after the first try.
I've been on Lisinopril since my heart attack in 2012. Not one doctor or pharmacist has ever said a word about any of this! Why is it this guy the only person to ever say this????
If your doctor sees you twice yearly to renew your prescriptions, that person is most likely running labs to check potassium levels. They don't attempt to educate us on disease processes, they monitor for what they are doing to control disease ( hypertension, heart failure, etc.) It is our job to educate ourselves... or put total blind faith in your doctor.
@@johnmarquardt1991 You read those you end up taking NONE! Two doctors said "don't read it!" They were right! When you are sick you have no choice! Procrit is one of the most dangerous drugs yet I must take injections every two weeks in high doses. What's the point reading it when you need it?
I took a TEE test 4 my heart. Which show my blood veins was narrow. Therefor my Heart Dr put me on isosorbide Mononit er30. Still take Lisinopril. My B/P 116/69. I am so 😊 happy,Praises GOD 😇!
Took Lisinipril for about a year and it gave me a chronic cough and had to stop taking it for knee replacement in 2017. Still haven't fully recovered from it. Still suffer the consequences.
Thanks for the info. Maybe I'm an exception but I've had no side effects after 15 years taking 10mg of Lisinopril except lowered blood pressure. Annual checkups are good. I'm thankful.
@@ingeborgm6147 I have been taking 10 mg once a day for about a year and half, and decided to change to 5 mg, just cut it half of the pill. I check my BP every morning, it is about 119 to 125/76 to 84. My doctor said reading is ok and he approved I could take 5mg. I hopefully stop taking this pill if I could.
I have taken lisinopril for about 20 years with no side effect but not all people are the same, some react negatively to certain medicine and others are cured.
I take 20mg of lisinopril and have been on it for 10 years. The only problem I have is a cough on and off. Sometimes it’s almost like I’m choking and takes a bit to calm down
I started coughing the first week. Stopped it and told the doc to put me back on the old meds. Thankfully i changed doctors. Told me it couldn't make me cough the first week.
I take potassium prescribed but also take max dose of lisinopril. Last two days about the hours after my lisinopril my ankles are so swollen I can hardly walk. I thought it was a salty food I ate but now I’m curious. Going to doc on Monday so I’m glad I can now ask a question.
I was on Lisinopril for years before I started getting terrible muscle cramping all over my body. It took me quite a while to realize it was caused by the Lisinopril. Changed prescriptions and they completely stopped.
I take 40mg of Lisinopril and Metformin and have suffered with muscle cramps for over a year. I started taking potassium and the cramps are much better, but still there. I can't take Losartan due to a myriad of side effects. So frustrating...
I take 20mg of Lisinopril daily for high bp. My doctor said I needed to quit drinking and smoking and chasing woman! I asked if it would make me live longer? He said not necessarily, but it will seem like it....😜
He is completely spot on about NOT taking in extra potassium. About 2 years ago I ignorantly added No Salt to my food.....BAD Mistake!!!!! Later on that same night I felt like I'd suddenly been hit by a damn train!!! And my head felt like the pressure would split it open!!! NO exaggeration. My doctor NEVER warned me about the danger of supplementing with potassium while taking this frigging medication!!# UGH!!!#YIKES!!!! Be *aware* and be verrry *careful* guys!!
I have been eating a couple bananas a day, plus oranges avocados and kale. A few months ago my BP was perfect. Now it's creeped back up again to 136/75 this morning. Once in a while it's perfect but now it's high every day. IM also taking Furosemide, Coreg & Isosorbide. My doctor wants it under 120/80 because I have an Aortic Aneurysm.
Called my doctor last week and got off that crap because a friend of mine almost died because of it. She said her lips started to tingle and swell, then her throat started closing up. She said her ER doc couldn't believe that with all the bad side effects of this drug it was still being prescribed. My tongue has been numb for four years now, after stopping this drug, it's trying to go back to normal.
That happened to me. My throat swelled closed. They said that I was as close to death as you could get without actually dying. I was on life support for several days.
So far my BP has dropped substantially what got me into this I thought I had a heart attack. Forty eight hours in the hospital and it was discovered my potassium was really low. After six transfusions of it I'm doing well and tolerating the Lisinopril for my BP which has dropped quite a bit.
This is really interesting. I am on lisinopril one pill before bed. My doctor also has me on 3 pills of potassium in the morning and two pills before bed.
I was just put on lisinopril today. I read the literature that came with the prescription. I noticed it said to take at least 6 hours prior to bed time. Just passing that along, you might want to consider not taking at bedtime. I'm no authority on the matter, just I would pass it along.
My potassium seems to be low normal. I take a low dose of lisinopril, sometimes none, sometimes a full dose, sometimes a dose & a half. I monitor my BP closely when I do take it.
I detest this medication. At first I had very few problems but I noticed my gag reflex was terrible? It got so bad I couldn't brush my teeth or chew gum. Even a little saliva in my mouth would make me gag. Boby aches, lack of energy, cramps etc. Those are just some of the side effects.
@@RiceaRoni354 yes I know. I was a nurse for 10 years & ask them if they were crazy? They said stay off your leg as much as possible at the time I lived in 2 story Apt. My shower & bed upstairs so I lived down stairs in recliner 4 months. Bathed in sink down stairs half bath for 4 months. It was horrible!
I take Lisinopril along with Labetalol and Amlodipine Besylate for blood pressure and Potassium because I was told that I was low. I stopped eating a banana a day to cut down on carbs and sugar spikes in the morning. My recent lab results from my last visit to see my Primary doctor were all normal.
This is one med that should not even be on the market. I was on it for a while, then developed several episodes of laryngospasm (spasm of vocal cords) where I could not breath. Doc took me off it, and they stopped.
My wife damn near died several years ago. Turns out she is allergic to ibuprofen. Should ibuprofen be taken off the market? Hell, no! I use it when I need pain relief. My wife even buys it for me when I run out. I've taken lisinopril for over 15 years. I've known about several of the side effects for years. I read about them in the pamphlet that comes with my prescription refill. More people should do the same. Sorry you couldn't tolerate lisinopril. My grandson can't eat peanuts...
So you had problem with this and it should be taken away from everybody that does not have a problem with this med I had a cough for a couple weeks when i started years ago it stopped and my BP went down it is a cheap and effective drug some people react to it. Your comment is ridiculous, Somebody is allergic to anything should we remove everything? Or only the things you are allergic to.
High levels of potassium in people taking lisinopril or other ace-inhibitors is most commonly seen in patients with type 4 RTA (renal tubular acidosis). This condition is a kidney disease often seen in diabetics.
Thank you for the video my question is is I feel dehydrated because of the heat wave I take 20 mg lisinopril and I also drink prune juice every day so it kind of flushes me out my question to you is is Pedialyte considered a potassium supplement what are your thoughts on that
My doctor put me on a really low dose about 2 months before the pandemic hit. I also have asthma. I started the dry cough a few months later and was in a panic - was it covid? Was it my asthma? Allergies? I called the pharmacist and he sighed and said; “I don’t know WHY doctors choose Lisinipril when this is a known side affect and Lorsartin works as well without that side affect”. I switched and had to split it half but no more cough.
I take 20 mg lisinopril (I am large guy) and also a product called ph adjust which has 133 mg potassium from potassium bicarbonate and potassium glycinate this past year. Is this too much potassium ? I have been very tired this past year and nap once or twice during the day. Thx
I took both but had an allergic reaction several years ago, swollen face and neck, was given benadryl (big pill), waited in EMS for an hour or so , swelling stopped. Was prescribed benadryl tabs for a day or so, no side effects. I now take metropolol and atorvastatin, no recurrence. Still take Potassium Chloride 50 MEQ.
I took it for a month or two....Started coughing so much and often....Had to be taken off it.Got put on micardi....Cough went away.Thought I was gonna die from all the coughing.Got so bad ... would get dizzy headed.
thank you! this helped a lot. Just started Lisinopril 20 mil. I was so worried to eat anything. I was like "can i have a salad every day or not?!? WHAT is considered EXCESSIVE? give me a number of mg per day??"
I know. They don't tell you what excessive actually is. What's a"regular" diet? I regularly eat tons of beans, fruit, and greens all high in potassium.
Question...My wife and I are on STEGLATRO a new type2 diabetes medication which allows the kidneys to remove excess glucose from the blood through the kidneys. Both of us are also on LISINOPRIL. Could the combination of these two drugs cause a high Potasium count?
I have a question . . I’ve been taking Potassium Citrate to prevent Kidney stones (and it does help to prevent kidney stones), I also take Lisinopril for my high blood pressure, is it ok to keep taking the potassium citrate (I take two pills a day, one in morning & one at night), each potassium citrate pill is 99mg . . I take one Lisinopril a day
I’ve been taken 10 mg of Lisinopril For 20 years maybe more, no side effects really. Was on Zestral 10 mg before that. Been on blood pressure meds since 25 yrs old, 58 now.
After a month on this, I started coughing. The coughing then turned into choking. I had to pull off the road three times because I was coughing so hard. Then I couldn’t go to social events because I was afraid of coughing. Finally figured it out. Now off. It took two months to go back to normal.
When I started it, I had the dry coughs. But after a few months, I never experienced any more coughs. My doc said that it was my body finally adjusting to the meds. It does suck when you start out on this med, but it will get better.
I take a pill which contains 20mg Lisinopril and 25mg of hydrochlorothizide which is a diuretic. The Lisinopril causes you to retain potassium, but the diuretic causes you to flush out sodium and potassium. So far my lab work has been coming back normal and my blood pressure is under control. (My blood sugar is another story though. That's a bigger battle).
I take lisinopril just got blood work and they said I was low on potassium and put me on 20 mg and I have had a heart attack 12 years ago on my third pacemaker should I be concerned about taking it
I was prescribed this crap a few years ago and I had too many side effects to list here. I would never recommend this to anyone. I exercise every day and changed my diet to maintain my weight and if that’s not enough at least I will die with my spirit and soul because if you take this arsenic it will take away your very desire to live.
It can be different for everyone. I've been on it for 8 months now. No side effects for me and the comfort of having normal blood pressure again. Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for others.
@@garymccarver5006 Ok good for you but this poison pill is prescribed to millions of people and causes adverse effects to a large percentage. Don’t take my work just do your own research.
@@rlake349 you're right, it's prescribed to millions. There's a reason for that, it works for millions of people. Sorry you're one of those it didn't work for. But it probably saved my life. My blood pressure was off the scale and I should have already had a heart attack or stroke. I'm greatful for what it did for me. Sure, some folks will experience side effects, but that true of any drug for any ailment.
@@garymccarver5006 Not being smart, but what could save your life is cleaning your arteries from the plaque build up, by eating better choices and exercise. Than you won't be pharma dependent, It's your choice.
I was taking lisinopril for seven years Thinge startiglike my lips start swollen two or three.times but couldn't understand why my daughter all my Dr .when he look at me and said it time for some changes .Three years now am doing fine".Am not the only one even health worker who taking this pill for high blood pressure experience the same.
I was on 20mg Lisinopril for several yrs until I saw a vid on YT that listed several side effects inc chronic dry hacking cough. Mentioned to my doc, he cut me from 20mg daily to 10mg and prob solved! BP did not rise....🤔
I've been taking Lisinopril for about 10 years and I have the same dry hacking cough. I'm a librarian so I work with the public. I've had people tell me I need to give up those cigarettes. I have never smoked. I've never mentioned the cough to my doctor. Didn't think it would do any good. I will now.
The pipe analogy has deficiencies. For people with good kidneys, ACE's and not over 65, a K+ level of 5.0 is not life threatening. Studies of populations as humans evolved have not been done(we don't really know a normal K+ level). A group of Mass General patients have been studied using ACE and ARB, K+ levels were high without a problem and CHF was better - wonder about the number of falls however? My mother's life was taken away by a confused hospitalist sending her to rehab at Age 88 on 20!!!mg of Lisinopril when she did not have hypertension.
The only focus here is potassium, however potassium is part of a necessary quartet of nutrients Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium which are needed in balanced amounts. I am very low in Vit D, which most times is accompanied by a magnesium deficiency. How do you increase your Vit D and magnesium levels without throwing your potassium level out of whack? BTW I also take Lisinopril
you prolly dont care at all but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any help you can give me.
@Shawn Alejandro i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I have been prescribed Lisinopril for heart failure, and have extremely LOW blood pressure. I am so tired all the time that the quality of my life is miserable. Oh, yes, then there is the cough...
Electrolytes are flushed out of your system with urine. It's not uncommon for people that drink a lot of water to be deficient in things like potassium or magnesium. Obviously get your own lab work done and follow the recommendation of your PCP.
Told the hospital in Gadsden Ala that I couldn't take potassium. They laughed at me & said every one can take it! Gave it to me any way & I broke out in a horrible rash!
Wow!😳! Didn’t know any of this!! .. So basically, if you develop High Blood Pressure for any reason, you have to forgo all pleasurable foods... So yeah! Let’s slowly kill the spirit so the body can live ((a miserable life!😒)) I pray never to develop this illness..not that I crave food...but to me, flavours are like looking at beautiful & colourful flowers..💐 So my question is, at 56 does a 5’1” woman weighing 113 lbs at any risk.. if the mom was cursed with HBP for no particular reason except loving sea foods & fish too much!? .. *_Is high blood pressure Genetic or Developed?? Which is it? 🤷♀️_* It’s just that I love salty foods... I don’t mean the type like chips & bacon..I mean in my recipes like stews, meat-loaf, soups etc... I just have no appetite for bland foods! Would appreciate a reply...please!!🙏
I have taken this for 10 yrs all of a sudden my hair started to fall out and I got scabs itchy in my head! I stopped them for a month and now all itching stopped and hair stopped coming out!!
I take it and also take Lasix which can deplete potassium . I took the potassium supplement as prescribed by Doctors in hospital. Guess what - after a year or so they took me off the potassium after my regular doctor discovered thru labs that it was not needed. I have NO problems, I have been on daily meds for ten years now and no problems. My doctor does labs every 90 days and I am fine. You can trust your doctor , if they are running your labs. Someone commented earlier about letting your doctors know what you are taking, and I agree it is very important ! I made a list of all medications I take, as well as all vitamin supplements and how much and how often, and made copies. This list goes with me to my doctors, and I even have this list on my cell phone. Do it - it can save your life.
I take 30 mg Lisinipril, but also take metoprolol and HCTZ. My BP kept going up, and I'm just about at the limit of what I can take. Even though my labs indicated a normal K+ level, I decided to try taking an OTC supplement, as I was getting frequent leg cramps. Amazingly, my BP has come down.
Sorry about the larger pipes in the example, that has absolutely nothing to do with pressure at the faucet, nor the pressure at the beginning of the system.
