0:32 What is high blood pressure?
1:11 What causes hypertension?
2:29 Potassium and heart health
4:04 Best sources of potassium
5:08 How to lower blood pressure naturally
In this video, we’re going to take a look at hypertension. Ninety percent of all hypertension is considered essential hypertension. This means the cause is unknown. Anti-hypertensive medication is one of the most prescribed medicines in the world.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80. Research suggests a strong relationship between potassium deficiency and high blood pressure. Many people are deficient in potassium because the requirements are so high-4700 mg daily.
You need about half as much sodium as potassium, but many people consume three times as much sodium as potassium!
Potassium directly controls the tone of the vascular system. This directly affects blood pressure. Potassium also supports the endothelial layer of the arteries and helps improve insulin resistance.
Potassium supplements often only contain 99 mg of potassium, which is incredibly low considering how much potassium you actually need.
You can get potassium from salad, but you must consume around 7 to 10 cups daily. This also provides magnesium. The combination of potassium and magnesium can help reduce high blood pressure.
Diets high in carbs and sugar cause you to lose potassium. Adrenaline and cortisol deplete potassium as well.
To support healthy blood pressure levels, try increasing your salad intake. You can also look for a high-quality electrolyte powder that's high in potassium.

I have high blood pressure and my potassium was low after being put on new blood pressure. My doctor said that low potassium was actually bad for my kidneys and told me to eat a banana and some dried apricots to up my potassium. I ate a banana a day and a handful of dried apricots and within two weeks my potassium returned to normal levels. Now I eat a banana a day and munch on apricots as well as eating the salads and a Mediterranean diet. My doctor feels confident that I will be able to get off of high blood meds if I start exercising regularly and drop some pounds. I'm glad that I have a doctor who is focused on reducing and removing meds vs increasing and keeping me on them for life.

And drinking water without electrolytes can add to that problem. I also think that so many people now drink bottled water, that is filtered and / or never had the necessary minerals in the first place! The bulk of the people living in the cities are most likely drinking bottled water, and if they are drinking city water, it going to be processed through the city's system and get stripped of any relevant minerals it may have had.

I am 83 years old & counting. I have been doing this kind of diet most of my life. I know this information. I do lack in the exercise, but I’m not a couch potato. I have lots of interests that keep me moving. I still have high blood pressure. It came on me suddenly just 6 months ago. I ended up in the emergency room for the 1st time in my life with nausea (not the throwing up kind) that made me sick all over. I had no idea what was happening to me. It took 3 emergency room visits & several doctor visits before I got any medicine, even tho my pressure was anywhere from 169 to as much as 219. ( dystolic was never out of control) My BP was jumping all over the place. No one could understand why I felt so yucky!! No one knew what to do for me. I do not like taking drugs but I was also afraid not to do ‘something’ for fear of a stroke or heart attack. I do know a few people that are on blood pressure meds & they seem to be doing fine. They didn’t even know they had HBP, til their doctor told them. Well, I finally figured out ‘the cause’ of my HBP!! And……very, very few doctors, or even these doctors that know that drugs are not the answer to curing it, are addressing this. In my case it’s STRESS!!! With my faith in God, I’ve handled stress relatively well all my life, but for the last 3 years I’ve been under a ‘new’ family stress. I was hoping things would get better with time, but that’s not happening. God & I are still working on it. I’m praying that when this problem gets solved I can get off these ‘cotton-pickin’ drugs!

@@wk8000 I am definitely not a doctor, so take what I say with a grain of salt. It was through blood testing that I found potassium was high. I believe this is what has helped the most to change my body composition. Nothing super intense as I am 45 but 6 months and went from 221 to 163 lbs this morning. TIL high blood pressure is often caused by low potassium, and that blood pressure meds are potassium blockers, and that Dr. Berg feels it's the ratio of sodium to potassium in a person's blood that is more important. Having high sodium requires more potassium to offset it, to prevent the sodium from raising blood pressure. When you intake less sodium, your potassium/sodium level ratio improves. Potassium protects the kidneys, except in stage 4 or above kidney disease.

Excellent info Dr Berg!! Who woulda thought!! 🥴 In fact I just read that avocados 🥑 are the TOP food source for potassium - and I eat at least one per day - occasionally two! We always stock up on avocados every trip to Costco, and once they just BARELY get ripe they are placed into the vegetable compartment of our refrigerator to slow the ripening process allowing them to be eaten over the course of the next week or even two! 👍 From Healthline - Avocados are packed with nutrients, and one avocado provides roughly 15% of your daily potassium needs. Avocados are awesome and delicious, at least at their PRIME ripeness point, which only lasts for a few short days, literally... Unless, (and this is an addition to what you said about putting them in the vegetable drawer of your fridge), (avocados are actually a tropical FRUIT, BTW!), but anyway, an even MORE effective way to keep avocados for a long time in the refrigerator is when they're just about ripe enough to use, right before then place them into a jar and completely submerge them in filtered water and tightly seal the top of the jar, then place that sealed jar with the water and avocado(s) in it into the fridge, on ANY shelf that's convenient, and the avocado(s) that are completely submerged in the clean water this way will keep for many weeks without spoiling, or getting too ripe to use! The key points are to make sure the avocados stay completely submerged so that NO AIR can get to them, that you always use filtered water, NOT just straight out of the tap, AND that you always thoroughly wash the outsides of the avocados BEFORE placing them into the water in the jar. Try it, it really works!

The no. 1 reason why people are so deficient in K today and have high blood pressure is sugar and starches consumption. My dad (71 years old) was for over 10 years on HBP medication. Completely ineffective, treating the symptom not the root cause. Of course doctors told him "It comes with aging, nothing you can do about it". I introduced him to keto, through dr Berg, Eckberg and others videos - problem solved in 2 weeks. Ever since, he doesn't need any medication and his BP is average 117/75. And that's stable blood pressure, for years. Keto also solved other health problems for him, but that's another topic.

I'm a few years younger than your dad. I was diagnosed with HBP in October 2018. Thankfully, our nurse practitioner isn't like most doctors. When I told him that I would not be taking that water pill the rest of my life, he smiled at me. I started watching Dr. Berg and another MD the first week of May 2019 and started strict Keto with my husband. Within three weeks, 15 pounds of fluid went down the toilet. My pressure was normal. I had run out of the medication a few days before seeing the NP. Pressure normal. He said that if my pressure is normal for another week, that he'd take me off the medication. I haven't needed the medication since then.

I quit taking it, added more potassium, D3 and K2 mek7, next day 144/80 , within a week 138/80, then week 2 130/70, week 3-4 120/70 back to normal, been there for a year!! When it was so high the pharmacist at Publix pharmacy blood pressure kiosk tried to send me to a hospital--- NOPE wasnt risking getting the jab!! I googled Dr Berg , did what he said and was perfectly fine!!!! ❤ L💝VE DR BERG!!! THANK YOU- my dr wanted to prescribe blood pressue meds, and diabetes meds. I refused both!!! A1C was 5 on my blood test. I told her not to write it because I wont fill it nor will I take it. No big pharma meds for me!!

My bp has never been high and i've never taken any hbp meds. However about a week ago i decided to take my blood pressure....it was 154/68. I also realize the i was eating too much salt. So I decided to go cold turkey. I went 1 whole day drinking plenty of water and without putting anything that was salty or anything that had salt in on my food (straight bland). The next day I checked my blood pressure and it was 128/70. So I decided to let go of the salt. That was 3 weeks ago. I also found out after cutting the salt my appetite decreased. And i started back walking 30 mins a day and little not much musle training. Thank you for the info. John 14:6

I was rushed to the ER in Dec '23 with intense gut pain following 2 months of bowel distress. A few days prior to the ER visit, I began vomiting after eating. When the pain had me screaming, I thought I had a ruptured bowel. IV drawn blood tests & a CT scan revealed very low potassium level, despite a decade on 4/day potassium tablets, but no blocked or ruptured gut. 2 units of potassium via IV, more tests, then drank oral potassium solution. My gut pain was gone nearly instantly. 9 hrs in the ER, and a $9,200 invoice...all due to low potassium. Geesh! I'm now on a daily liquid potassium chloride Rx which I add to OJ or pineapple juice to make it palatable.

@@salauerman7082 Apparently not. I was taking Spring Valley potassium gluconate 99 mg, 4 tablets per day. But I've heard that you need 4,700 mg per day (preferably via foods eaten). Due to my lymphocytic colitis & diuretic meds, I was losing a lot of nutrients before they could be absorbed. The doc wrote an Rx for potassium chloride 20% solution & instructed me to take 15 mL (approx 1 Tbsp) per day. It tastes very salty, so I mix it with 8 oz of pineapple juice to make it tolerable. Follow-up blood test 4 weeks after starting it revealed my potassium level is in the middle of normal range, so it must be the right dosage for me. Better yet, all that intense gut pain was gone the day after I got the IV @ the ER and thankfully hasn't come back.
