Lithuania and Poland were once the same country, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

We go on a Kaunas walking tour of the city, once the capital city of Lithuania now European culture capital 2022. I try to compress hundreds of years of Lithuanian history in ten minutes, including some Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian history since it is all connected in the region including the Kievan Rus. Lithuania used to be like an empire spanning from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, being the largest country in Europe. Later it struggled for survival with the emerging Russian empire in the east and the Prussian empire in the west. They formed a personal union with Poland for survival.

Kaunas was a very relaxed city and since we weren't heading to Vilnius I had to go out and tell the story of Lithuania. Keep in mind that it's a lot of history to cram in 10 minutes so nothing complex (Central/East European Baltic history is pretty crazy). If you would like to add to the story then please do so, cheers.

That knight on the horse is seen also on the emblem of Białystok, vytautas (in Polish Witold) was a cousin (not brother) of Jagiełło, a lithuanian Duke WHO became a Polish King and set a Jagiellonian dynasty (btw, Jagiellonia is a name of Białystok footballu team), on 15th Jul 1410 Jagiełło with the poles and Witold with lithuanians won the massive battle of Grunwald against the teutonic order. About kaunas i was once there by train, IT stroke me massive buildings, bridges, a huge river and at the same time really small railway station.

6:54 The flag is absolutely cool and, as some commented already, this knight traditionally appears on emblems of many places in the region. It is called a 'Pursuit' in English and 'Vytis' in Lithuanian. The name of the Grand Duke was 'Vytautas'. It's is easy to get lost in these fairy-tale names ;) And the Grand Duke who became also Polish king was 'Jogaila' (pronounced 'Yogalia') from the House of Gediminids. Another super cool name!

But not so bad under the Germans during WW2? Nazi collaboration among all the nations the Nazis occupied during WW2 participated in the Holocaust and the removal of non-Jews such as teachers, intellectuals and others to Nazi labor camps and worse. Lithuania has yet to acknowledge its complicity with the Holocaust. Nearly 95 percent of Lithuania’s 250,000 Jews were killed during the conflict. In the Netherlands hundreds of thousands of Dutch Nazi collaborators were prosecuted for collaboration or treason and 127 of these were sentenced to death but only 16 were executed. Of course there were those who risked their lives as partisans and others who saved many from Nazi ideology and insanity. If we're going to give history lessons lets make sure its a full accounting not just some dribble written by aristocrats.

As the French would say in 1842: "...histoire est juste peut-être, mais qu’on ne l’oublie pas, elle a été écrite par les vainqueurs", in English, "...history is right perhaps, but let us not forget, it was written by the victors”).
@artelislt
@artelislt Год назад
@@bcinspectorman Lmao. Did you just blame a country for things which were done by another country? Lithuania was occupied by Germany as you wrote, therefore - they could not do anything to oppose them on mass scale because they were *occupied*. Not mentioning that Vilnius(I may be wrong with the city) was called the second Jerusalem by jews before ww2. Jews came to live on bigger scale in Lithuania during middle ages, when The Grand Duch of Lithuania wrote letter to people in Europe to come work there(he stated that religion, sex etc... Did not matter and everyone was accepted to come). We were occupied by both devils(I am not religious just in case), but to us - the soviets were a lot worse(not mentioning post ww2) and so a part of partizans helped them fight against soviets which occupied them before. There were all kinds of partizans - communists(soviets were that bad that even they joined), democrats, monarchists, fashists....But they all united to fight against common enemy - USSRS. So as you can see - they had to choose a side and fight or just vanish and die without a single fucking russian dying. Long story short - learn basic history about the country you're gonna write shit about. P.S No one wrote that Lithuanians liked to be occupied by Germans nor it was good to live under their rule

@@iPedroMota well, there is no place like home ,so hopefully one day I can return. But if you are just working a regular low level job then it can be quite hard to have a comfortable life there . A common expression that I have heard from Lithuanians is "nesisuksi , negyvensi" which basically translates to " if you wont hustle you wont live" .It doesn't really make sense to go back unless you plan to start some kind of business to provide you with decent income . For example in Ireland where I live now most regular jobs will pay in a week what a similar job in Lithuania would pay in a month... Hopefully Ill get my big business idea some time soon 😅 Enjoy your time there, the country has some beautiful nature spots in the countryside you should definitely visit , be prepared for some rough gravel roads though 😂

Big learning curve, game mechanics you were unfamiliar with could break your game halfway. Big rewards gamewise though and if my kid would have to waste hours gaming then better on a game like that.

RU-vid's use of commercial advertising within each channel's episodes may be one reason. When they started injected commercial advertising within the content it was brief, 5 seconds, but now it can be much longer, two ads both 15 seconds long at one 'break' and a few more 5 second ones. Those who create channel content are used by RU-vid (Google) to amass huge profits from their work. Then there are viewers whose attention spans get less and less with each new social media platform like Tik Tok.

6:10 she is wrong, a lot of people make this mistake, as flag is now named Vytis, with is short for Vytautas, but Vytis is a word in its own. Vytis or how back then it was called Vėliava is older then Great Duke Vytautas, he also wasn't a king, king needs to be Christian, but Vytautas adopted christianity only later in life, but was not crowned. Now a little about Vėliava/Vytis, its pagon symbol, warriors carried it to battle to call Velnias(Devil, god of justice) to invite Vėlės(Souls of dead, usually soldiers in this case), then Velnias and Vėlės would morph in to white knight "Vėliava"(God of war) usually Vėliava is depicted on a horse, but there are cases when its drawn without it. So maybe that's how Lithuanians were able to beat 3x bigger armies as even if you kill them they still fight :) Also Lithuania has 2 official flags, national flag 3 colors and state flag Vytis, both basically carry same weight by law, example if you go to sport event where only official flag of a country can be carried, you could take Vytis and it would be fine. Its sneaky way to have 2 flags.
