What was great about this version is that unlike others, recent and prior, it didn’t feel like people were acting their famous parts. It was Polly Klaas' favorite book. For those who don't know or remember, Polly Klaas was a famous kidnapping case. In 1993, she was abducted from her home during a sleepover. Winona, who grew up in the same town, became very involve with finding her, including offering a money reward for her safe return. Alas, Polly was strangled to death by her captor. In her honor, Winona went out of her way to make a film version of *Little Women* and dedicated it to her.

Their acting is so natural - it feels like two real people actually meeting for the first time. There’s nothing that feels theatrical or rehearsed about this. Especially the way he says “I don’t, uh, know anyone so I feel awkward just standing and staring at people.” Such a genuine line delivery; not stagey or dramatic, just Bale being a vulnerable young man. So much alike here. They both want to be free of the worldly formalities -- the society party (both are off on the sidelines, not taking it seriously). He doesn't want to be forced to attend college, while she wants to break the barrier of going to college. Want to do a handshake. Both of them are socially awkward and weird, yet so comfortable together. Sitting on a desk, devouring Teddy's dessert, and they barely know each other, opening up about her dream of the stage/their dislikes. Jo forgets all about her damage to her dress. And when she is reminded of it, she doesn't take it seriously. Dancing around the house, lost in each other. Genuinely having fun! Their energy matches. And neither one of them disapproved of one another. Of course, they have their rows, but are still so accepting of each other. Challenging, accepting. That's a real team right durr.

Besides the point that their relationship was platonic, I would choose Laurie over Bhaer any day of the week. 1. Know’s Jo as her most authentic self 2. They both have an interest for art 3. The have a lot in common 4. They both have a sense of humour 5. They both are stubborn and have a bad temper at times, but know how to own up to their mistakes and manage. 6. Both can be social and outgoing as well as quiet and introverted.

Gelatin Man Jo at 15 as her most authentic self? I don’t know anyone who would want to be 15 again, you don’t really understand who you are and what your place in the world is yet. Jo was always more mature than Laurie, which also explains why, to me, she knew early on that they weren’t right for each other.
@amberfranke5970
@amberfranke5970 4 года назад
Adrienne Pender times have changed depending on whether being 15 was the most enjoyable. Also people married younger than and a lot of things like graduating high school and having children, happened 2-6 years earlier. I don’t mean her knowing everything, in the society at that time there wasn’t much opportunity for her anyways besides getting married and having children, but she could always put the acceptance on hold as long as she agreed to stay with him. When I mean as authentic Jo, I mean funny, smart, mature, boyish Jo, the one where she doesn’t feel shy. Also l in the book the sisters are friends with Laurie for 3 years, then there is the 4 year time jump, so Jo is was actually 22 when he proposed.
@tracys169
@tracys169 3 года назад
If it were that you're Jo :D. I understood that the author didn't end up pairing them as a way to 'rebel' against her publishers. Then she was pressured regardless to end the story with Jo being paired up so she came up to what she'd consider as her ideal match/partner...so therefore Bhaer.
@amberfranke5970
@amberfranke5970 3 года назад
Tracy S I do think Laurie and Jo have a good relationship. But the way the novel ends sends such as message to young people that “improper/not idealistic” relationships are bad unless society says it is and that you can love someone outside of their wealth and your ideals. In the movie adaptations I will always stand by Jo and Laurie as for the books it makes lots of sense for their platonic relationship. From the start of the novel Jo makes it very clear that their relationship with each other is platonic whereas Laurie has an unrequited love for Jo that is obviously not returned. When Laurie says Jo’s sister Meg “is very pretty,” he was waiting for her reaction but she agreed with him otherwise she would’ve said Meg “was just fine, or what about me?” Therefore feeling jealousy for his “attraction” to Meg.

Actually I think the novel ended on a pretty good note, morally. Of course this is only my interpretation of it, but I see it as Jo having the freedom to choose who she wants to be, which coincides quite well with how Jo is portrayed in the novel, someone who is, well, free-willed(I meant someone who do not care about the usual civilities and what is considered proper in society) . I think the fact that she ended up marrying Bhaer is a testament to her growth, because at the beginning of little women until moments before the ending of Good Wives, Jo is portrayed as being in love in independence, but then she realized that independence is nothing compared to freedom, including freedom from what she force herself to do, that is to not fall in love(shown by her saying that she will probably never marry). By marrying Bhaer, she is showing that she finally is free, that is free to choose who she wants to be with and what she wanted to do.

My beloved "Little Women". I grew up watching this version, and have never stopped watching it almost every year. I remember watching this a little over the New Year of 1995, and I was so taken by the story, I loved it so much I dreamt of its characters for days. I just finished watching Greta's version and I loved it too. I will not compare both versions. I loved both as they are.

Still my favorite version of Little Women. In the older ones - from 1933 and 1949 - both actors who played Laurie were just too old (both well above 20 years old) not convincing at all. Bale was perfect mix : still young - 20 yrs old, but not too young, not looking like a child as Tim in the latest version from 2019. Bale's looks and aura were perfect : if you look at him here, he has delicacy and sensitivity, but at the same time he is manly. The perfect combination that no previous version of Laurie had, and from what I saw, the newest is also missing (Chalamet is too childish looking). Besides, Christian and Winona in particular, had amazing chemistry. Beautiful couple.

Saw the 2019 one, only liked the begining and the end with the publishing process and Meryl Streep as the aunt, wish she had more lines, and Amy and Laurie scenes in France, otherwise I feel like rewatching the 1994 one again, it simply takes you to the 19th century without time line distortions, making you feel like you are there.

Вау, в этой версии Джо и Лори очень красивые. В новом сериале не нравятся, там актёры играют с современными повадками. А здесь и манера говорить, и бытность 19 века лучше передана. Замечательный фильм.

Cinematography wise, this version is far superior to the new remake. The new movie looks like a Hallmark TV movie by comparison. The incredible cinematography in the 1994 film transports you back to that time and you don't even need the actors. But they end up being the cherry on top.
