Live and Let Die | James Bond 007 Supermarathon | Novel Review | Fleming Opens Up The Bond Canon

James Bond's first adventure was a taut and tense bullet of a book and with his second outing, Fleming widens the scope as Bond gets to travel about a bit more.
It's our first Bond jaunt to the States and our first Bond visit to Jamaica in a plot involving pirate treasure and voodoo.
So how does this larger canvas match up to that claustrophobic debut adventure?

Underrated book, all the dated elements overwhelm the actual story which is a solid adventure. Drags during the train for sure but all the Jamaica section is classic stuff.

Loved the series- the ending card music is a bit loud but otherwise so interesting

I am greatly enjoying this series along with your Doctor Who marathon. I am someone who has never had much interest in the Bond movis and little more in the books, though you may well tip me.ovrr the edge into looking for vintage copies. Like you I'm more interested in seeing the books as they were originally written even if they are far more cringe. As a lifelong fan of H.P. Lovecraft I do have some experience in this department. At this point however Goldfinger is the only one of the movies I can be said to be familiar with though I have seen most of the Roger Moore offerings along with a handful of the others. One question about this review: I had long been under the impression that The Spy Who Loved Me was considered the most controversial of the Fleming Bond novels, having you identify this one instead is very interesting. Any thoughts about that or should I make for the review of Spy instead?

Thanks very much. Well the reason I opened this video with that is because it's easily either this one or TSWLM. If you're aware of that novel being a contender for that you'll likely know why but I'd say this one is in the running too because of the racial aspects. Which even caused discussion at the time. In fact, the next time Bond goes to America in the books, Fleming has Leiter educate Bond on what Fleming himself had learned and been told following reaction to Live and Let Die

Thanks very much!. I do appreciate that Fleming was willing to learn and grow in a response to criticism, at least in thus early part of writing career
