I still can't understand why they didn't seek help for Ethan way before that day. He was clearly struggling. My teen was having some issues in early high school year 7. I didn't need the school to tell me that my child needed help. I got the help they needed, and it wasn't easy they pushed back on any intervention. It was bloody exhausting getting them to specialists. In the end, they got the help they needed and now few years later they are a different person. They're doing well at school and their behaviour issues have been resolved. Parenting is a hard work but when we become parents that is what we sign up to.

The state of Michigan simultaneously argued that Ethan Crumbley wasn't mentally ill in one trial, and called multiple pyschiatrist to testify to the fact...and in the other two trials were arguing he was so mentally ill that the parents should have known he'd shoot up a school if he had access to a firearm. Yet in the parents trials, all of those psychiatrists who testified that Ethan was completely sane weren't allowed to testify.

I think Mrs Crumbley dropped the ball in her statement. I think she failed herself by focusing on defending herself at a sentencing hearing, where it serves no purpose. Mr Crumbley on the other hand, is much more compelling at that start. Also his attorney is very good. The fact he was found guilty despite having such capable representation says a ton about how the evidence was absorbed by the jury. Especially because the jury was of parents that were also gun owners. I agree with Peter here that if you don't have remorse, the definition of remorse, don't ask for that mitigation factor because it just comes off as selfish and self serving and just makes it worse for you. It could happen to any of us.....but we have a responsibility to do everything possible to make sure it doesn't. If they stored the gun properly, if they had taken their son's mental distress seriously, or if they had taken their son home after the meeting at school. Even if their son had still done what he did, they wouldn't have found themselves in this position because they would have done everything they could have done. Their failure to act contributed to the actions of their son. That's where they failed.

While I would agree that these are not normal for a teenager, as one who has never murdered nor even intentionally hurt other, who was neglected and not gotten the help I needed, who had no group of friends and subsisted on one friend at a time, it is a falacy and an insult to those of us who don't commit evil acts to indict these parents and hold them responsible for their son's evil deeds. I never murdered anyone and I never have intentionally hurt anyone either. Should my parents get the credit for that? I think not. Children, whether or not they received the care and love they need, will choose their paths regardless of the parenting failure or successes they are subject to. We don't parent to prevent things we have no control over. We parent to teach and set our children in the right direction. New teacher here and holy cow!! It’s bonkers how many James and Jennifer’s are out there 😢. They’re narcissists, that’s why they act so defensive. Narcs consider their children to be extensions of themselves, and not autonomous human beings. So if their child has issues- they feel people judge THEM as if THEY are the “bad” ones, and because they’re narcs, they are overly sensitive to that criticism too. I had TWO parents back to back tell me that “my child’s friend is in your class and they say you’re always picking on my kid”, yeah because teenagers are the best arbiters of truth and totally unbiased to boot. Meanwhile their kids are pulling in F’s in most of their classes. But I’m the problem. Got it.

You can’t I take responsibility for one moment, even if your life literally depends on it??? So far from being a person who is redeemable. The thing is, there's concrete evidence that Ethan told his parents about the symptoms he was having. The voices, the hallucinations. They laughed it off! He asked them for help and told them he needed to see someone about it. He was told to suck it up! Mom elected not to have her family covered on her health insurance. I think he could have told them he would do exactly what he did, and they would, or did, simply ignore it! Their testimony would be, well, we thought he was joking. These two were completely negligent and, by default, complicit! They illegally bought a minor who had let them know he was having psychiatric problems a gun!

I am so tired of hearing people say the school is more responsible than the parents. The school may have some liability as well. I agree with that but parents have the ultimate responsibility to help their children. This case, in my opinion, does not lead to the slippery slope that people keep talking about as well. If these parents had tried to do everything, or ANYTHING, to help their son I would not feel like they deserve to be charged. These parents not only did nothing but then bought him a gun, didn't lock it up and taught him how to shoot it. Even today in sentencing, Mom is still trying to blame others rather than take any responsibility.

This case is crazy. As a parent it is tough to know what your child is capable of doing. But.... you as a parent should be guarded. Short story of mine. I took my son on a cruise. He was 16 and a teen that got into some minor trouble in school. I was always concerned that he would get into something worse like drugs and stuff. So I was always on guard because I saw the signs. And he was split between me and his Dad because of a divorce it wasnt easy for him. On the cruise he was hanging out with some kids that kinda made me feel uneasy and one night I was right. He found a way to get some drinks with the other kids and they were brought back to the parents. That night I was so so worried that if he left the room while I was asleep he would fall over board because teens can get silly and make bad choices . I Sat up all night watch that door. He didn't try to leave. But I wasn't taken a chance. My point is I saw signs. And I had to think the worse so I didn't let my guard down. I think the sentencing was alot for them. Also. To go along with my previous comment. My son Austin at age 22 was killed in a hit and run by a impaired driver as well as my 20 year old nephew and also my son in law was in car and he survived thank God.. the guy who did it. the day trial was to start decided to take the deal that the prosecutor was still offering.. long story short.. the judge didn't go by what prosecutor asked.. he got 102 months.. 10 years no licence and 5 years supervised after the 102 months.... Here is the kicker.. the judge then had more security come in.. cause he ended up suspending the 102 months minutes the few weeks he spent prioir to bonding out and additional 30 days that he got to serve over a six month time.period. so unless he messes up on probation he won't serve more time.. judge said the guy was super young and she wanted to offer the opportunity to him that he can change and be a good person and that he had a child just born.. he was also 22 and his baby mom was 16. Mind you my son had a son who was 3.5 and also one on the way.. judge said if we wanted to be upset to be mad at him not the attorneys or prosecutor.. so funny how the system works. I have no faith tbh in the system..also I seen the guy driving a Lexus last week .. called it in to the DA office ..probation office and law enforcement all in which nothing has happened to him as of today. ... So my heart does go out to these parents.. and I won't lie at one point I did want something bad to happen to the guy... My ex tried and was sentenced to three to 5 years which he served three. And the day my ex found the guy out on bond and hit his vehicle.. I prayed that God would spare the guy life so his mother didn't have to feel like I feel daily.. imagine that smh... This to me is wrong.. sorry but that my opinion..and sorry for long comment. ❤

Don’t be sorry for the long comment, bc mine is A LOT longer…. Read it all tho. Also, your comment had a lot of info bc you went through something awful & still suffering from the tragedy that another person created, simply bc they chose to put everyone at risk for the sake of doing what they want (driving drunk). I’m sorry your partner went to jail for whatever he did to that guy - obviously the sentence means it wasn’t good, lol - but I know that it was out of emotion and I feel like when your world comes crashing down, sometimes all reason and logic comes down with it. I don’t agree with the judges sentence in your case - it makes me wonder if he will learn a lesson at all, which I think needs to happen if a person is to truly become rehabilitated. However, ten years is a long time. That means any violation during this time will absolutely be taken more seriously and possibly send him to prison. While I do hope that this guy DOES reform - and I’m saying this because I hope that this guy can understand what he did and choose to be better bc of it… knowing that your son will have died and this guy will have felt no remorse or guilt, or drive to do better is upsetting bc it’s like… you don’t see how precious life is? And taking it from someone else truly means nothin to you? Idk. Life is precious. Your son shouldn’t have died, especially that way. He didn’t deserve it. But if that guy can realize what he took & knows he needs to do right by your boy because of it, that is some sort of good that could happen. It never should have happened like this though. ---- That being said - I understand where you’re coming from. Not exactly, but the anger and revenge and loss… absolutely I would feel that way if I were in your shoes. I mean, how could you feel anything else? Despite what I said earlier, I think I would be angry forever if I went through what you did. I think I would really stay like that forever. Who knows though. If what you are saying is true though… that he is still f*cking driving…. OMFG. This is what you do, okay? First of all. Don’t go near him. Don’t stalk him. Don’t touch him. Don’t antagonize him. Keep. Your. Hands. Clean. If he’s really acting like this - after all the damage he has caused - let him do the dirty work to get him behind bars. That way, if there is something that happens, and he is facing sentencing again bc he messed up somehow, you go to the sentencing hearing and you give your statement - and the court will see that this guy is a dangerous person all on his own. Without any outside influence, this guy is toxic at the core. Seriously keep your hands clean. Also. When he is sitting in prison, he will sit there and think of how much HE messed up instead of convincing himself that “it’s all their fault I’m in here.” Feeling guilty will eat him alive. Feeling angry will give him energy. And if you are truly committed to getting him behind bars & want to make it happen yourself - still keep your hands off him & I will tell you what to do. *‼️So I’m really being serious about this part… hire a private investigator.* ‼️ I used to know one who worked for an insurance company and would literally be keeping an eye on people so that he could take pictures, video, and any other evidence - to show that a person committed insurance fraud. For example: someone says that their hip got injured in an accident and they file for insurance because they’re completely incapable of working/walking/etc. *BUT* the insurance company suspects they’re lying about it for whatever reason - well, the private investigator goes and keeps an eye on them & when they see that guy walking to his mailbox, going on a pub crawl, playing outside with his kids - that is when the private investigator gathers evidence (photos, videos, etc). & *THAT* is how the insurance company can prove to a court that the person filed fraudulently. So if it works for insurance companies, it can work for you too. If the person who took your sons life is still acting wrecklesssly, seriously look into hiring a private investigator. They know the laws. They know what they can and cannot do. They can keep a better eye on him & gather evidence so that all you need to do is put a bow on it and take it to the judge or something. A LOT of private investigators are actually former police officers, or people that have worked in some part of law enforcement. They can help you do what needs to be done & make sure it gets into the right hands. Sorry for your loss. Also I am sorry this is long lol. Your comment just really made me feel for you. I can’t even begin to imagine your pain.

It would be amazing to know whether the judge had a different idea about the sentence coming in, and changed it after hearing their statements. If after two years plus, they still aren’t able to see that their parenting contributed to their son’s choices, even ten to fifteen years won’t don’t it. Society at large is tired of parents refusing to take responsibility for the behavior of their minor children. They talk about what their son did, as though he alone is responsible. This is a wake up call. When they say this could be anyone’s child, the warning they imply is that parents are all at risk for becoming victims of their children’s behavior. Instead, it should be understood that this is a warning to all parents to PAY ATTENTION to their children! If one of my children did this, I would immediately realize that I failed as a parent. I know I’m not alone in that thinking.

Some jobs don’t have sick days. I would wait in the nurse’s office all day if I was sick at school because my mom couldn’t take off work. My husband’s job now has sick leave. We lived many years before at other jobs that didn’t. He didn’t work, he didn’t get paid.

I just don’t like that Jennifer is saying if the school had let them know more then she would’ve been concerned because her emergency 911 text to James Crumbley showed that she was concerned and then I also don’t like James Crumley saying he had no idea his son would do something like this when the first place he went after hearing about the school shooting was not where you go to meet up with your child after a possible shooting (which I can’t believe is a thing in the states, how does that alone not tell you there’s a problem) but went by the meeting spot and home to check for the gun because he had an inkling. (If I’m remembering correctly)

If the “slippery slope” means that parents need to be parents and that emotionally troubled kids aren’t given guns as entertainment, I’m for it. I live in a part of Atlanta where many children parent themselves and everyone suffers for it except the parents.

All the Crumbleys had to do was 1 thing and everything would have been different. They should have told the school that they bought their son a gun instead of hiding this fact. I have NO doubt that, if the school knew this, the situation would have turned out differently.
@MT-rg4zb
@MT-rg4zb 4 месяца назад
They didn’t “hide” that fact. They had no idea that their son would shoot up a school. Tons of families at that school had guns in their home. It was “normal”. Their son shooting up the school didn’t cross their minds and neither did saying “hey we have guns in our house”.

Neglect is actually the most common form of child abuse and the damage done is lifelong, as you can't get that stage of development back. He was not the way he was because of something that happened that day, week, year or necessarily even that decade. The damage clearly started early and continued throughout his life.

@@BlueDauntlesswrong. Maybe turn off Fox News and get yourself informed. A little BLACK boy shot his teacher a few years ago. She didn’t die, thankfully. His mom got to spend some time in the pokie for allowing her child to access it. The only reason THIS case is setting a precedent is that the kid k!lled children at school. But it’s certainly NOT the first time a parent has been held accountable for extreme neglect and reckless behavior.
