Why not have a free school for doctors, plumbers and auto engineers and pilots.

I first heard of free schools in the BBC series Back In Time For School. Since then and afyer watching this video, I wonder what would happen if free schools were still around.

The free school was actually quite ahead of it's time. We have a modern version of such a school in my town (although it's definitely not free) but there are more varied learning opportunities and more autonomy /responsibility expected of the children.

I went through school in the 80s and 90s in Australia and for the most part I think it was fantastic. It combined the relaxed easy going nature of free school which gave us as students plenty of room to explore our own interests BUT we also had a strong emphasis on the basics, reading, writing, arithmetic (maths). Free school looks great but I do wonder if the kids learn to read and write at a decent level but the stuffy British state school system of those days appeared incredibly rigid and dull.

Very very 70s hairstyles on the boys. Hard to believe it is from as early as 1971!

Basshead will not appear here, I am sure. That also due to the fact that his vocabulary does not go beyond "1st"

School leaving age is now effectively 18. Other than that, not much has changed.

I was 7 in 1971 and the teachers, in 1970's, never helped you to improve. Whatever level you were at, you stayed at that level. Apparently now, it's different. Is that true ?

horrified how? don't be so quick to assume that traditional forms of teaching are better
@rhythmictiger

@@MostlyLoveOfMusic Exactly! Was it perfect, no, but as the parents said the children loved it and were happy to go to school. I especially liked how they involved the community, especially older people who seemed to also enjoy and gain from the school
